What I've been up to lately (hanggliding)

Not sim related really, but I thought some might be interested. Feel free to move the post if you see fit.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaG69dXj3CU : Landing montage.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u26cPD9KUE : Second soaring flight.

Took up hanggliding 2.5 months ago, has been a lot of fun and got my first real soaring flights just last weekend. A number of years ago I had gotten my private pilot's license, however I found there to be a distinct lack of Nazi's to shoot at. In general aviation there are no built in goals, you fly around a bit until you get bored, maybe go somewhere for something to eat, but you really have to make your own fun if you have no practical purpose.

With hanggliding on the other hand, or any other gliding, the fun is built in, stay up, find lift, ride the wind currents, maybe even see how far you can go if you have someone that can pick you up. You are so much more aware of the air and your environment, a rising dry leaf, or a bird circling going up can give away an area of lift. And of course you can see so much more, nothing is buried under the plane or behind your instruments. It's like sailing but in three dimensions.

I would recommend it to anyone interested in flying, but especially to private pilots who wish to get better tuned into what's really going on in the sky.

I have been hang gliding since 1987 and had some wonderful experiences. You have a lot of great times ahead!

Hang glider pilots do it lying down ....

    There's no place like cloudbase!

Honestly I'm not even sure, it's one of my instructor's, an older vario with a few basic features. Working on getting my own equipment right now. I have decided on getting a new Tracer harness, which I will order this week. Going to get a Falcon 170 glider, new or used, just depends on what I can find. I'll get a basic vario like the one I'm using here, just something cheap and functional, which is all anyone really needs until they think about going cross country.

Nice flying. I taught myself and it was a..uh...rather mixed experience but survived unscathed.

@Nork...nice pic! Yeh, all I had was mine ears for airspeed. No vario.

Here's one when my bro and I were learning (I'm doin the flyby).

    Cheers.

Nice flight Zeb! I still remember borrowing a book from the local library called:
How to build your own hang glider." (ok really showing my age now)
It described using bamboo poles and polythene garbage bags to build a delta wing.
Ah those were the days none of this health and safety stuff, just sticky tape and a healthy dose of testosterone!

Close, i grew up in OZ in the seventies!
Have to say, that book gave me cause for concern even as a 15 year old.
I'll have to swing by that library sometime and see if its still there, although, i suspect they may have got rid of it for insurance reasons. : )

    Geez Nork,

You were either 5 year old in that pic, or you have a relatively young voice!
