Bomber Command Missions Send Ideas here!

    Hi,

While I have some specials up my sleve I am looking for peoples input into some missions for Bomber nights on ATAG.
My mind is a little fried on coding so I need some help with mission and targets.

If you could send them to me... maybe in the format below, I will build in. You don't have to be a mission designer (I can do all that) Just give me some "Out of the Square" ideas please.

All I have to do is add the targets and assign the Triggers, all the rest is done.

Anyone in ATAG community want to help? Send in Idea to this thread.

Re: Bomber Command Missions Send Ideas here!

A few missions I can think of atm...sadly I have no idea where the planes took off from or met up with their possible escorts.

Blenheim + Wellington raids on Willhelmshaven; targets : ships and docks.
Blenheim raids on occupied airfields ; Aalborg, the Hague, Brussels ,but also French targets (most aren't on the map sadly, but maybe surrogate cities can be found?)
Low level Blenny raid on Cologne powerstations (again not on the map :/)

For the German raids you can check this site which lists what was bombed day by day, mostly convoys ,docks ,warehouses, factories, airfields etc.

Re: Bomber Command Missions Send Ideas here!

So I spent some time rewatching this clip as it seemed to have a lot of useful information for Bomber command maps.
I'll try to include as much info as possible, but exact numbers, nor takeoff or formup points aren't always given.
Some parts will require using alternative bombers for the do-17's and it's likely plane numbers will have to be tweaked for playability too on some raids.

    july 10th
Target : convoy (codename "Bread") headed from the Thames estuary to the Dover straights.
    Bombers : 27 DO-17's
    escorts : 24 110's and 24 109's
    interceptors : 24 Hurricanes , 6 spitfires

    August 12th
Advanced fighterweeps at 07:00hrs consisting of almost 200 109's. Meant to draw the defenders E-NE to the sea, away from the target area.
targets : radar installations at Rye, Pevensey, Ventnor and Dunkirk (UK one!) + chain low home station at Dover.
    Bombers : 08:40hrs ; 16 110's took off from Calais.
4 of those split off and attacked Dover station, bit later 4 more split off and headed to Dunkirk, next 4 hit Rye , last 4 hit Pevensey. (aug_12a.jpg)
Later the same day 80 Ju-88's escorted by 121 110's and 25 109's attacked Portsmouth, 15 broke away and attacked Ventner Radar. (aug_12b.jpg)

August 13th (probably combine waves 1+2 and 3+4 into a mission each?)
    Wave 1...
Targets : Southampton and Portland (Portland not on map, use Bournemouth as alternative?)
    Bombers : 120 Ju-88's
Escorts : 30 109's as close escorts and 30 110's as advanced sweep.
Interceptors : 4 British fighter squadrons, no types or numbers mentioned

    Wave 2...
target : Sector station/airbase at Middle Whallop (Andover and Old Sarum are close and on CLOD's map)
    Bombers : 77 Ju-87's escorted by 109's
Interceptors : spitfires based at the target.

    Wave 3...
    Target : Rochester bomber factory
    Bombers : Stuka's
    Escorts : 109's
    Interceptors : Hurricanes

    Wave 4...
Target: coastal command airfield at Detling (operations block and hangars)
    Bombers : Stuka's
    Escorts : 109's
    Interceptors : none mentioned

    Aug 15th
Multiple simultaneous attacks, left out the ones not on our ingame map.
Probably easiest to bundle the ones close to each other into one map/mission.

    1.
Targets : Hawkinge and Lympne airfields
    Bombers : 60 Stuka's
    Escorts :40 109's

    2.
    Target : Manston airfield
    Bombers : 25 110's

    3.
Targets :Rochester town and Eastchrurch+Hawkinge airfields
    Bombers : 88 Do-17's
    Escorts : 130 109's closeby + 60 109's doing a sweep over Kent.
    Interceptors : 39 fighters

    4.
Target : Kenley sector station (hit Croydon airfield by mistake)
    Bombers : 110's

    5.
Target : Biggin Hill (hit West Malling by mistake)
    Bombers : 110's

    6.
Targets : Middle Wallop + Odiham and Worthy Down airfields
    Bombers : 60 Ju-88's
    Escorts : 40 110's
Interceptors : 3 squads of fighters

    7.
Target : Portland (again Bournemouth as close alternative?)
    Bombers : 30 Stuka's
    Escorts : 109's and 110's
    Interceptors : 18 fighters.

    August 24th-September
Targets : Continuous raids on Sector stations around London (North Weald, Hornchurch, Biggin Hill) as well as smaller fields at Manston, Eastchurch, Lympne, Croydon
    Planetypes not mentioned

    September 7th, 11th and 15th
Target : London (eastend docks, warehouses)
    Bombers : 300
    Escorts : 600
    Interceptors : 21 squadrons

That's "all" ..hope there's some useful stuff in there.

Heh, no need to praise me..praise Wolf instead.
He does all the hard work and puts the hours in, coding for us.
I like bomber missions and since I'm too thick to make them, the least I can do is take a few screenshots of possible scenario's.

Some tidbits I think of now as well :
-Blenheims bomb bridges to stop/slow the german advance on Dunkerque, Oostende and Calais.
-Blenheims bomb German tank and troop convoys moving up to Dunkerque, Oostende and Calais ; bomb massed troops at Ieper.
-Stuka's attacking the retreating troops and Dunkerque and Calais as Belgium and France are overrun, ofc also bombing the merchant shipping used to evaquate the troops.
-Dorniers and HE-111's attacking stongpoints/towns as France and Belgium are taken.

Re: Bomber Command Missions Send Ideas here!

Be nice to see waves of Wellingtons actually bombing the crap out of Calais and Boulougne and other targets with lots of factories but make them all start off on the same vector then change mid Channel so the waiting 109s cannot be sure exactly which target this wave is heading for (be nice if there was some way to randomise targets so people can't learn the pattern)

Of course we have similar AI bomber raids already but nobody seems to care what the bombers are doing (other than being an easy source of kills for the enemy) so perhaps in these missions the number of factories destroyed is part of the Red victory conditions (maybe number of bombers destroyed over France is the Blue victory condition). This gives both sides a reason to defend/attack each wave.
It would also be nice to see the active Blue airfields being carpet bombed every now and again just to keep them on their toes

Am I right in thinking that AI bombers might not RTB & land correctly after dropping their bombs? That is why I am saying only count bombers destroyed over France. Is it possible to count only bombers destroyed over France? If not can we count bomber crew parachuting over France? I am trying to avoid the Blue victory conditions simply being 'survive for three hours' as with have with Operation Daisy because that is currently very boring for the Reds.

    Roblex,

There was some changes made to Daisy. Reds have targets now, some are even able to be strafed. A few airfields have been swapped as well. Give it a go

I know there is several bugs in several missions atm, I just have not had time to work on them. Too many irons in the fire as they say. I will be getting a nice week long break before the holidays where I'm hoping I can actually sit and work on finishing some stuff I've long had on the back burner from lack of time.

Blenheim + Wellington raids on Willhelmshaven; targets : ships and docks.
funnily enough I've been looking at these missions (from an SP perspective)- been reading
    http://www.amazon.com/BATTLE-HELIGOL.../dp/1906502560
There's certainly enough info there re units involved etc

I think it's possible to do something like this- if we use some old skool IL2 suspension of disbelief wrt the map
The coast of France can be the coast from Holland- Denmark. Le Crotoy= Willhelshaven
UK -if you twist your head to the side you can imagine E coast- Southampton=Ipswich, London=Kings Lynn. Using Reading as 'Wyton'

Another such possibility is I/KG30 attack on shipping in Firth of Forth 16thOct- Thames Estuary= Firth of Forth

Ships is a big problem but am working on using tankers as 'cruiser'/'battleships' I'm only at the stage of a test/outline mission but my plan was to work up a mission pack over xmas

    .
Fair point, I had forgotten that Daisy had been changed but it is still true that, for most part, the bomber streams are just a source of easy kills and there is little incentive to protect them. I have also heard people complain that when they did decide to escort the bombers they wasted their time because nobody attacked them and the bombers just meandered across Eastern France with no obvious target and did nothing useful. That is obviously not true for all raids because I have seen JU87s diving on Hawkinge though I have never seen the other bombers hit anything which may be because either they all get shot down too fast or they are just very inaccurate so nobody sees any effects. Can we have a map where there is some need to stop the bombers or help ours to get through?

Another thought is 'low level airfield attacks'. One of the most damaging attacks suffered by Biggin Hill was not a large formation of JU87s or He11s, it was a small number of JU88s that came across on 30th August below the radar and then escaped unscathed. If they come in very low, and not near the ships where people stooge around at low level, then the first time anyone knew they were around would be when the Observer Corp spotted them crossing the coast and there would be a made scramble to dive down and find them Similar things might be done with Blenheims taking a less well used route and attacking an active rear field in France.

At 4.00 p.m., again without pause, the third and perhaps heaviest group of raids is plotted building up. During the next two hours large and small formations of enemy aircraft flood in over Kent and the Thames Estuary. The Junkers Ju 88s which appear over Biggin Hill at 6.00 p.m. only number nine but the havoc caused by their bombs is far worse than that of any previous attack. The airfield is taken completely by surprise. Six of 79 Squadron's Hurricanes manage to scramble before the bombs start falling but 610 Squadron, already up, is too far away to help defend its own base.
There is wholesale destruction as workshops, cook houses, the sergeants' mess and WAAF quarters are wrecked and 90% of the station's transport is damaged or destroyed.
All electricity, water and gas mains are cut: and two parked aircraft are reduced to scrap. The airmen's shelter is pulverized by a direct hit and all those who had crammed in a few moments earlier are killed. Another bomb hits the airwomen's shelter and the concrete walls cave in, crushing and smothering those inside.
Everyone outside pitches in and digs furiously to free the trapped women. Ambulance and stretcher parties stand by. One-by-one the women are carried out: some are barely recognizable because of dirt and blood on their faces. Others are dazed and bruised but all, except one, are alive. Lena Button from Tasmania is the only casualty. Altogether, 39 personnel have been killed and 26 injured.

Re: Bomber Command Missions Send Ideas here!

I would like to see some sort of encouragement for players to participate in level bombing.
Not sure how to do this!
When designing a mission it would be useful to include wind over target information. This could be included in the mission brief and/or by smoke near/leading to the target.
It may seem a cheat, but having "objects" placed leading to the target would assist level bombing operations. Some leniency needs to be applied as the target generally does not spawn until almost too late to be of any use! A variety of objects could be used and mentioned in the brief as navigational markers, i.e., "The three large oil tanks at xxxtown are 25 km east of the target." ...etc
My own research suggests a northerly in the current series of maps.

    Good luck mission makers!

    !
Area targets that get destroyed when a certain tonnage of bombs are dropped, within a set timescale.
I.e. an airfield or a town that is "destroyed" if 10,000lb of bombs are dropped on it within a 15 minute window.

Low-level intruder style bombing would not be as efficient or effective against this kind of target.

Icons for objects placed at targets for "reds" in actual missions are visible a big (unrealistic, game bug) distance - ie you see the box of Ju-88 in Oye Plage when flying over England - only map objects (hangar...) pop-up. For actual "battle area" I think that aditional objects guide are not really necessary, but is a good idea too deept attacks.

I like fly bombers, but (as "red") the problem is that Blenheim refuse to do a stable level flight necessary to level bombing, the best I get is lowering RPM in right engine, this plus lack of 6DOF in bombardier cockpit and poor frontal vision make make this type of attack very frustraging. Eventually I hit some these Ju-88 from 10.000 foot, but no luck with another targets.

On the other side, I find bombing these big ships convoys on France coast too "gamey", because they are fantasy...

Would it be possible to script a "Path Finder" mission.

You go into target with a single Blenhiem and mark the target (Drop bombs on it) and then the script gets the location and assigns it as a target for a AI flight of bombers.

    Just a thought!

    Cheers!

    Hi,
I am told we have a flyable wellington in Desert War-Tobruk.
So to have a mission for this, e.g. on Heligoland Bight and fly the wellington, or hit A and sit back and watch as a movie, would be great.

also a night mission, searchlights, flak etc.

Thats if spending £55 get the wellington flyable in the BoB campaign as it doesnt come with just a Blitz update to 5.015

I am on edge of seat and wanting.. wanting.. wanting any mission you and the readers of this thread have managed.
Would they also pull out existing skins or also come with supplied skins for more accuracy ?

Where do we get these mission packs from ?

    Excited

Re: Bomber Command Missions Send Ideas here!

To create a mission of the raid on the Heligoland Bight would require the creation of an entirely new map... not only that, to include the British starting bases would mean a map 4 times the size of the current Channel map.

This would be an enormous amount of work for a mission.

Considering the Wellingtons were used in many many missions on the area of the existing Channel map as well as the new Tobruk map, there is no logic to your request.

You already got the a flyable Beaufighter, new Tiger Moths and a Bf-110C-6 for free when we updated CLIFFS OF DOVER to BLITZ, you don't get unlimited free aircraft and maps.

If you want support the work TF does and see additional new maps and to fly the Wellington, buy the TOBRUK dlc.
