Problems With Starting Again. Help please?

    Hi Guys

I was playing CloD patched to 4.312 no problems on Windows 7 up to about a year and a half ago. Then I stopped owing to 'life changes' ....a new girlfriend. Anyhow, I want to get back into it. (She's still around before anyone casts aspersions ). A little while back I went onto Windows 10 by means of a fresh install (not an upgrade). I've now downloaded and re installed the Vanilla version of CloD from Steam. Vanilla won't run at all. I still have the TF patches from before, so started sequential patching with 3.0 The problem is this... Now the sim boots up into V3.0. It all looks normal until I select a quick single player mission as per patching procedure. The mission starts to load then about half way through the loading bar's progress I get this message "Error Loading Mission. Can't find sound group bob/engines/merlin XII or invalid set up" then it drops back out to the single player quick mission set up screen when you close the error message window. I then tried patching to 3.01, same result. At that point I stopped.

I tried re downloading and re installing Vanilla again, patching again in case it was a glitched download - same result.

I don't know where to look for the sound files without digging through every folder. I had a go, but have opted for the collective wisdom on the forum. Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Steve (616_Gibbs)

    Hi Steve

Vanilla from memory wont run in 10.
I did a fresh instal not to long ago.

    So if from steam;
    DL game,
then run the steam update for good measure.
Disable steam synch for the game in steam gui.
    Then apply the v3.0/3.01 patches.

To revert from what you have use the 'verify game files' thingy in steam. That will restore it back to v1.

Hi Vlerkies, thanks for the info. I did as you suggested - turns out Steam Cloud Sync was unchecked anyway. But anyhow I got exactly the same result so back to the drawing board.

    Cheers,

I upgraded last week to win 10 and couldn't successfully launch the game using the shortcut I've used for years (to the steamapp). I found I could run the game by using the launcher.exe directly. I don't know if it's relevant to you but might be worth a try?

Hi Reddog, I've been launching directly from the Sim launcher anyway - right click, run as administrator as per patching instructions. I don't think it's that. I had previously tried launching through Steam. I've installed and patched CloD on Win 7 a couple of times before for myself, and once for a friend on their system so I'm familiar with the procedure, but this is something new and I can only think it's a win 10, driver or update issue...if nobody recognises the problem and comes up with "Yeah I've seen this.....you need to do X, then Y, then Z, etc, I'll start systematically looking for driver or update problems.

    Cheers

    Steve D,

    Welcome back!

    First there is this:

If you go directly from Windows 7 to 10, you must add 2 files (CloDer.exe & Cloer.dll) in the game folder and start the game from CloDer.exe. Otherwise launcher.exe won't work.

You can get them here, they were designed fo Windows 8. Choose 0.2.zip

    Thanks to GRAthos

    Bye and good luck.

As you see, there are many threads with Windows 10 issues. Each PC is different, just keep searching until
    you get it right.

Re: Problems With Starting Again. Help please?

Hi Deacon, thanks for the raft of info. I'll start working through that. The Sim launches and the selection menus work but it falls over when you go to launch an actual mission - looks like it can't find a sound file.

    Cheers,

Re: Problems With Starting Again. Help please?

    Hi All,
It looks like this is quite an old thread, but I have had several similar problems and found that it was being caused by the sampling rate on my sound card.
I have an EMU 0404 PCI card I also use for music recording purpose and it allows the sample rate to be changed. I found that if another application changed the sample rate from 48k to 44.1k then I get the "Can't find sound group bob/engines/..." error.
Before I found this I had tried reloading CLOD from scratch several times and it did not fix the issue. Setting the sample rate fixes it every time.

On other forums people have reported that their soundcards may have had some bearing on the issue, so I suggest that if you suffer from this kind of problem it's worth checking out your soundcard settings.

Hope this is of some help.

Re: Problems With Starting Again. Help please?

Just want to confirm that I had this problem also, under CloD 4.5, and it was somehow related to the sound device - in this case my USB headphones.

They were connected and shown as OK in device manager but when I tried to play a test tone, there was an error.

In CloD, the game would start but didn't play the little intro videos with the TF & IL2 logos. Then in-game it gave the error "Can't find sound group bob/engines/..." when trying to start any offline mission, and the mission wouldn't start.

In multiplayer, I could join the server and jump into a plane, but there was no sound and no visible aircraft at all (just sitting in an invisible a/c like Wonder Woman).

In this case, just unplugging & re-plugging the USB headphones solved the problem. It now has sound OK, logo videos play as normal, planes are visible rather than invisible, and generally CloD works OK again.

Can you add this to Bugtracker?
