Resolved: Can't UNinstall the KB2760838 update?

    Hey guys...

I had this very problem the other day, the solution is actually pretty simple, finding the info is the hard bit...

Ok so i was unable to uninstall the KB2670838 update but its not restricted to said update it can be any windows update on your system, upon trying to uninstall the update i was getting this error message : "An Error Has Occurred Some Updates Were Not Uninstalled Correctly" thats all i had to go on.... (yea chears MS) some people actually get an error code which helps find the issue but most of the time you will get my non error code msg when multiple issues are present

So whats happened? basically you windows update files have become corrupt for some reason and we need to fix that...

WINDOWS 8.1>10 (direct copy paste from MS website)

it seems a lot more automated in 8.1>10

    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search. Type Command Prompt in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

    2. Type the following command, and then press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth (please note the spaces in the command line peeps)

Important When you run this command, DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files that are required to fix corruptions. However, if your Windows Update client is already broken, use a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files. To do this, run the following command instead:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess

Note Replace the C:\RepairSource\Windows placeholder with the location of your repair source. For more information about using the DISM tool to repair Windows, reference Repair a Windows Image.

    3. Type the following command and press Enter.
It may take several minutes for the command operation to be completed.
    sfc /scannow

4.Close the command prompt, and then run Windows Update again.

DISM creates a log file (%windir%/Logs/CBS/CBS.log) that captures any issues that the tool found or fixed. %windir% is the folder in which Windows is installed. For example, the %windir% folder is C:\Windows.

NOTE:: Info in the win7 section under the logfile will still may be of use to to win8.1>10 users as in win8>10 you just use a different tool to do the job

    WINDOWS 7 32/64bit

    Step 1

Go to the windows download center and download the "System Update Readiness Tool" its about 500MB, its important that you SAVE the file as you will be running it multiple times..

once downloaded run the program.... now this will take some time depending on a lot of factors but the usual is about 15/30 mins can be longer if you have a lot of issues, it took me about 15 mins and i had more problems than i had seen others have online...

    Step 2

Once the program has done its magic navigate to C:\windows\logs\CBS (cbs has just been created by the program) inside this folder you will see 3 log files, for the most part we are only really interested in "CheckSUR.log" open the file in notepad or what ever txt editor you use....

For ref im going to post mine here so we can see whats going on

Dont freak out its all pretty simple

if we look at the start of the log we see a lot of this

    (f) CBS MUM Corrupt 0x800F0900 servicing\Packages\Package_10_for_KB3110329~31bf38 56ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1.mum Line 1:
    (f) CBS Catalog Corrupt 0x800B0100 servicing\Packages\Package_10_for_KB3110329~31bf38 56ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1.cat

Now we don't need to be a MS technician to realize that "KB3110329" was causing me issues... it probably wont be the same for you but its all the same in the true light of day, and if you look through the log you will see KB3110329 keeps throwing errors, this update was the only update that was corrupt in my case (no other updates are present in the log if you want to check) it maybe different for you so go through it and check for other update corruptions! and make a note of the updates that are throwing errors, you will need them in the next step...

Now if we take a look at about half way in at our summary

    Summary:
    Seconds executed: 2119
    Found 56 errors
CSI Manifest All Zeros Total count: 32
CBS MUM Corrupt Total count: 12
CBS Catalog Corrupt Total count: 12

we can see all our errors, hopefully next time we run this it will be all nice FIXED messages ...

bellow the summary we see all the manifest errors, dont worry to much about these ATM, we are just after the update ID's for E.G "KB3110329"

so make a note of all your update ID's... write em down or put them in a separate txt file for latter ref.... close the log, dont save changes (in-case you changed something)

now MOVE both log files ((CheckSUR.log & CheckSUR.persist.log)) to your desktop, we will use these latter to see how awsome we are

    STEP 3

Stay with me we are nearly there!

Now go back to the MS Download Center and type in the search box the name of the update that's causing you issues, now download and "SAVE" that file to a place of your choice... repeat for any other update packages you found in your log file..

Next, Navigate to C:\Windows\CheckSur ... right click inside the folder Checksur and create a new folder and call it "packages" ...
Now go to where you put your download update package(s) and place it or them into your newly created "packages".... then close...
Next stand on one leg and sing a song of your choice.... (optional)

Finally run the "System Update Readiness Tool" again and let it fix all your horrible errors!!!!

once thats done, go back to C:\windows\logs\CBS and open up "CheckSUR.log" again...

here is the summary of my now fixed update file system

    Summary:
    Seconds executed: 1586
    Found 44 errors
    Fixed 44 errors
CSI Manifest All Zeros Total count: 32
Fixed: CSI Manifest All Zeros. Total count: 32
CBS MUM Corrupt Total count: 12
Fixed: CBS MUM Corrupt. Total count: 12
Fixed: CBS Paired File. Total count: 12
Congratulations, you just fixed your problem, now go and uninstall that damn update!

    ADDITIONAL IF INTERESTED....

So what did the program do? the update names that popped up were giving errors we downloaded and replaced those bad updates with clean ones while also fixing registry issues connected with them...

But what about those .manifest files i hear you say?

for the sake of making things simple just look at .manifest files as normal everyday files that the updates need to work, now the log files will show us the packages that are giving issues AND!!! the individual files... hence the .manifest files...

with any luck all the .manifest files listed are part of 1 of the updated packages listed in the log file and will be replaced from the new clean update we downloaded.. in most cases this is the case but you may find the odd .manifest which is not included in the packages given in the .log file...

IF and i mean IF, its pretty rare TBH you have to search it out through either google searches or going through the registry... for info on this i have a link for you..

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...-registry.html

its long winded but if you do end up with this issue then thats what we have to do....

    thats it...

hopefully this will help someone one day and get them flying the best WW2 flightsim ASAP

    S!

    Thread stickied.

I confess I didn't understand a lot (OK...most) of it, but I can also see where this could help other players down the line with a LOT of useful specifics.

Thanks for posting your solution. I'll edit the thread title accordingly.

    Cheers,

I thought that the problem update was KB2670838. Is KB2670828 simply a typo error?

Re: Resolved: Can't UNinstall the KB2760838 update?

    Hey freya!

Im very sorry i seem to have made a mistake on the fact its different if you win 8 up... ill change the OP...

i just looked into your problem and im guessing your not running win7 ... if you are it should work as stated make sure you have Downloaded the right one I.E win7(32)/(64)

on win 8 its a lot more automated.. root folder DIR's look to be the same, i dont have a win8/10 machine to check for ya but from what im seeing its the same... this is a direct copy paste from MS website so follow these instructions

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

For Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012
To resolve this problem, use the inbox Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. Then, install the Windows update or service pack again.

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Really am very sorry for wasting your time freya... hopefully this will get your sorted, if you need anything further or don't understand anything please post back and ill look into it for ya... dont forget to check out Repair a Windows Image.

    EDIT....

it looks a lot more simple for win8>10........ Basically.. run the program and it auto downloads what you need automatically! as it says unless your windows update system is broken (which is NOT the issue we are talking about here as we can install updates and uninstall MOST updates its just we have a corrupt update somewhere, its not the update system itself if that makes sence)

Also if the program doesn't download what we need (IF) there is actually a problem with a selected update(s) it gives you instructions to point to say a windows install disk.... SO!! im guessing and i mean guessing as i dont have a 8.1>10 system to check, we could check the log as i explain in the win7 instructions, download the updates we need for your OS place them in a folder and point the DISM tool used in win8>10 to our folder with the needed updates and the tool would use our new updates to fix the issues... if anyone is required to give this a shot please report back and let us know

I have Win 7 / 64. My event logging is turned off, would that be the reason it doesn't work for me? I'll double check to see if I ran the right proggy, don't worry, the box hasn't imploded yet! Thanks for your help - I might pester you some more in the near future...

    Hmm mm.....

Double check u have the right version win7 64x...

Not sure event logging would be an issue here tbh.. But it's worth a pop.. Also run the program in administrative mode.... how long did it take to run the program? I'll look into your log error a bit move... I tbh I just assumed it was OS related.. I ll take a look and report back ASAP..

Ok I'll double check the version is right, and what's that about administrative mode?

Um lemme try this again, I'll report back this eve...

edit : it took about 15-20 minutes to run the program, which was more like an installer.

    All sounds right there Freya..

Done a bit of digging for ya, Im busy at work atm but I think you should direct your attention to the error in your log... I don't believe the issue is with the update readiness the tool or related to it. I I think you have another issue... I have but this is how diagnosis works...

What exactly has been your problem... I what symptoms of have you had?

I would put my money on what ever your problem is that it's “The RPC server is unavailable“ that's the issue I really do...

I don't know enough to say you may or may not have corrupt updates but the rpc server not bring available is no small issue...

    You had problems logging on?

Re: Resolved: Can't UNinstall the KB2760838 update?

My issue has been slow response from the PC. CPU load isn't spiking on idle, but boot time is slow, response when openeing a folder or program is slow, or even scrolling down a web page. As for cliffs the in-game gui is sluggish, usually a 5 second pause from when I click something on a menu (things like loadout, single player, multiplayer, even 'exit' for example) till I see it respond, sometimes it just freezes up for no apparent reason. I haven't played many other games lately so can't compare, though arma 3 seems to respond slow as well. I've suspected trouble with the updater as it 'hangs' sometimes, which is why this thread grabbed my attention, but I'm not too tech savvy with such things to say for sure. My computer has never given me much trouble up to now. Is there a trustworthy program that 'times' my start-up and tells me what is taking up the most time/memory during start? Ones I've looked at so far seem sketchy, and I'm very careful about what I install on this PC. In the meantime I'll do some digging about this RPC business...

Re: Resolved: Can't UNinstall the KB2760838 update?

    Quick post...

I don't believe your problem is the one this thread is talking about about..... Leave the log error a bit... we need some more info first...

Do a deep virus scan and post your results

Also go to the start menu go and type in the run box "msconfig" then navigate to the tab startup and post your results....

Sounds like something is hogging your memory... I'll be on latter with more checks

    @Freya,
have you tried to boot your pc in safe mode?In that state it only runs the things needed for windows. If your slow system is software related youcan see a difference in speed. And maybe check your mobo if the capacitors are still (visial) good.Broken capacitors don't look flat but are bulbed.

Re: Resolved: Can't UNinstall the KB2760838 update?

also do "ctrl + alt + DEL" then select "start task manager" and let us know whats running there also,

screenshots maybe better for the above and the "msconfig" as there may be a lot going on..

when you have the task manager open, at the bottom of the window it will show your CPU > RAM load and # or processes, give us that info as well..

im betting a good cleanup of your startup programs would fix this, if you dont have anything nasty running like malware or a virus im betting your loading a bunch of crap on start up, with a few programs in there thats hogging your system... if thats the case then its a few clicks and your off an running again....

as for programs for cleaning crap out of your system Ccleaner is a decent program for win7, ive used it for years without any nasty issues, always done a decent job of cleaning the rubbish out without screwing my system...

    https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

dont run it yet tho, this is because it may clean out files that will give us clues to the issue if this proves to be a somewhat deeper picture than what im painting here....

we will get running smooth again dont sweat it...

    whats your specs BTW?

    CPU?
    RAM?
    GFX Card/Vram?

EDIT:::: if this is something nasty (virus for E.G) or a hogging program the issue will have come on quickly I,E was running well until you did a specific thing, if this has got gradually worse i bet you its a huge startup config that needs cleaning out... i do mine atleast once a week, pays to keep it in tip top condition or you pay further down the road...

i don't think this is serious unless you have a virus/malware the only thing that im slightly concerned about is why you don't have the RPC server running or at least available to you, this is an important part of the windows system and can cause a host of issues, the main one logging onto you OS account.. but we will worry about that latter

Re: Resolved: Can't UNinstall the KB2760838 update?

Ok here is some screens of stuff..

    startup.jpg task2.jpg services.jpg services.jpg

    taskmanag.jpg

    I have an I-7 2600 @ 3.4, evga 660ti 2gb see pic:

    info.jpg

I'm not loading much on startup, and I have ccleaner and use it once in a while, very sparingly. I notice with cpu-Z that my core voltage bounces from .972 to 1.224 and core speed moves around alot too, and memory DRAM frequency bounces around from 645 to 675 mhz. Is that normal, or the sign of a failing PSU perhaps?

I run windows security essentials weekly, full scans, and malwarebytes. Not sure how 'deep' they go, but they've done the job so far.

I'll try a boot as Stormrider suggests and see if there is a difference too..

IF you need any more info specifically, please tell, I'll get it! Thanks for this help!!

edit: I just looked at these pics I posted and realize they are tiny! any better way to get a screeny of a window?

edit 2: added pic of task manager stuff (below first row of pics)

Re: Resolved: Can't UNinstall the KB2760838 update?

hmmmmmm.. that looks pretty clean, i was expecting you to be loading in tons of junk on startup but that's a clean boot TBH, the only thing i can see in there that hogs is bonjour service but TBH with your rig you wouldn't even notice... so dont sweat that! something else is at play here...

is your windows update's up to date? i know if windows update is looking and searching your system for updates its kills it pretty hard? it doesn't look like it from your manager shots but it may be worth going (start>run>type "windows update") run it and go to the settings there and select "never DL updates" and see if that changes anything, its only a click or 2 to put it back...

The only other thing ill say from that is.... get a better firewall, windows firewall aint the best and you cant really see whats going on to well TBH im not a big fan, its nothing to get worked up over but ya, im not a fan

ok then thats that idea out the window, ill have a think and poke about on this RPC server issue (if it is an issue)

out of interest have you had any issues UNinstalling > installing windows updates? or were you just plucking at straws when you saw this thread? and when did this become an issue? was it over a couple of days? a day? or long running thing getting worse? its important in tracking it down... so think hard the more info we get here the better...

Dont worry we will find it

    EDIT::::::::!!!!::::::::::

    quick test on something here....

start>run "windows features" the select "turn windows features on or off" a small window will pop up and may take a little time to load, does anything pop up in the window? i dont need specifics but it shouldnt be empty after its run..

Re: Resolved: Can't UNinstall the KB2760838 update?

I would say long running thing getting worse. Heres results from the quick test:

    features on:
IE9 - I use chrome, when I click this off it gives a warning that some features/programs may need this
    media features
net framework 3.5.1 (I think I use 4.6 ?) - had blue filled box and no checkmark
tablet pc components (don't know what this is!)
    windows gadget platform
    windows search
    xps services
    xpc viewer

print and document services was on but I turned it off- no printer here

    thats it!

windows updates will install eventually, or atleast did last run through. I have it set to not install, but let me choose. I'll set it to never install (if thats a thing) and see what goes on...

Also there is no way for me to run the file in the OP as administrator. It is an executable, but no option to 'run as admin' on the properties tab, or the pop up via right click. I have yet to double check if I have the right program, I'll do that now.. edit : yep I have the right one

Re: Resolved: Can't UNinstall the KB2760838 update?

yep all good there, the features window will be completely empty if there is a specific problem but your good there....

ok done a bit of looking around, im not sure if this RPC server is anything we need to worry about TBH, im yet to convince myself of this but i think its going that way, so we need to get back to basics to find this..

so as asked in my last post how and when did this start?

That's the trouble - I don't remember. 3-4 months? At first it didn't bother me, I shrugged it off thinking it's just a temporary computer 'thing', so I never thought to make note of when I noticed it happening! Duh! I wish I did. I'll try my best to time-travel, and see if I installed anything, changed anything etc. in recent months..
On the bright side, at least this isn't game breaking... yet! Since I've been tinkering away with this problem, hitting this, clicking that, it seems to have run cliffs OK just an hour ago, though I had one or two big pauses on the gui. Startup time is still painfully slow, so I'm going to dig into that. Down a google rabbit-hole yet again... Also I've checked off my updating just now, so I'll monitor things for a day or 2 to see if I notice a difference, and see if I can pinpoint any relevant things to report to you. Between this and another project I've been working at, I'm ready to drink now. Cheers and thanks for your help here, Gizz!

How much space is left on your hard drive ? A stab in the dark here but it's surprising how many peeps forget to leave enough HD space to allow for Windows to maneuver files and give it some working space.
Have u a done clean of your physical pc case, heatsinks and fans ?
How long since u have done a reformat and clean install of Windows ? I find after a while (a year or more) u start getting some annoyances, slow downs, that u can't pin a specific culprit too and it's just time to back up and give your rig a birthday.
Hard drives are pretty good nowadays but they can just start to wear out. Might be worth running a HD checking utility http://www.howtogeek.com/134735/how-...rive-is-dying/
I"ll 2nd Gizz's suggestion about CCleaner. Have seen CC really boost a pc by getting rid of useless junk that is cluttering ur OS.

@Torian - LOTS of space left, 1.11 free from 1.8 TB. PC cleaned, I've never done a clean install of windows - ever. 4-5 years old PC here? Not sure. I don't even know how to do a re-install of windows! I'll check the HD utility out too, thanksyou! As for Ccleaner - how does it determine 'junk'? I'm a bit hesitant to let it go on a deleting spree. I think I need to check some guides on how to use ccleaner properly...

Since I turned windows update off, things have been slightly smoother, but only slightly. On the the other hand, I'll have to remember to turn it on again once in awhile to do updating (I never use automatic mode anyways..)
