Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of the BEF from Dunkirk.

After the break of the Maginot Line on May 10th, 1940 and the surrender of the Netherlands on 14th May, the German High Command continued to develop it's successes. Part of the British Expeditionary Force under the command of Lord John Gort, French units and formations that were part of the 16th Corps, and the remains of Belgian troops stationed in the northern part of France, were pressed to the English Channel.
May 18th, 1940, the commander of the British troops, Lord Gort for the first time openly proposed to consider the evacuation of Allied troops to the British Isles.
May 20th, 1940, German armoured units broke through to Abbeville, troops of the 1st group of the Allied armies (in total, 10 British, 18 French and 12 Belgian divisions) were cut off and pressed to the sea in the Gravelines, Arras and Bruges area's. From the south and south-west against them, the troops of the German Army Group "A" under the command of Colonel-General Gerd von Rundstedt (E. Panzer Group Kleist, Panzer Group Gotha and the 4th Wehrmacht Army), from the east and south-east - forces of the German army group "B" under the command of Colonel-General B. Leeb (part of the 18th and the 6th armies).
Churchill, the Cabinet and the British Admiralty decided to evacuate part of the British Expeditionary Force to the British Isles.
