    Virtual Cockpit Monitor

    Hello !

Just a quick enquiry to anyone who may know....

thinking about setting up virtual cockpit on a small monitor... tablet size i guess. Desk... erm.. I mean cockpit space is limited... so i want something small that can sit flat in front of my main screen...

    I'm no techie... don't have a tablet...

don't want one... (unless its a suitable option for this application !)

    Re: Virtual Cockpit Monitor

    Seas!

I downloaded the virtual cockpit last week and put it on my second monitor. After a bit of 'faffing' about I have it all up and running.

It will take a bit of getting used to but it does make it easier to read the cockpit instruments and not having to use the mouse cursor is a plus, especially when in a dogfight.

The download I am using is from the forum download section. It contains most of the main a/c types represented in CloD. There are a lot of dials etc. so some of the figures/numbers are small, even on a 23" screen. You will need to consider this when deciding on a tablet size.

    cheers buddy.

was looking for minimal dials... compass and temps. the rest will be left "in cockpit".

    Re: Virtual Cockpit Monitor

The idea of Virtual Cockpit is nice but unless for semi-replica cockpit - Nails style - you don't need all that information.

For Spit for example is useful Compass (due the in-cockpit "It's CloD!"), temp, boost and maybe RPM.
The other infos are easily checked on game cockpit.

VC is "easily" editable - in Windows.

You find portable LCD with 10" or less size - check Amazon, sample:

    https://www.amazon.com/Elecrow-1024x...n%3A2633094011

Note sure how easy is use one.

Conventional computer LCD will find in 15" size, or expensive touch screen in ~10'.

cheap is the order of the day ! and 10" is plenty much.

    Re: Virtual Cockpit Monitor

I set this up on a 10" tablet, just for the compass in the Spit.

Love the way it works, but unfortunately for me i took a big fps hit, so not using now.

But it sure was great to have a big bright compass that could be seen with a quick glance.

Thanks to all who made the programs and showed us the way to use them.

    Is a Android Tablet?

How you edit VC to show only compass?

There's Miag "DataLink cockpit" that run in smartphone, but as has many instruments on screen result too small,
I want only compass but don't know how edit, in Windows version is "easy".

From what i remember you select the plane type, and then you can slecet each instrument you want shown... tick box style.

    Re: Virtual Cockpit Monitor

15" wide screen monitor grabbed on the bay... £19 delivered.

only has VGA input... but i tested another old screen with an HDMI adapter and it works plenty fine.

260mm tall (being the case measurement) and 370mm wide.

Pretty much ideal to lay flat in from of the main screen... Got three outputs from the 980ti so get to keep my Map / TS screen to the left

and of course my A0 printed Cliffs map on the wall right above the monitor.

Starting to look more like the starship enterprise round here than a hurricane... but so what !

keep ya posted on how it turns out !

    Obsession is creeping over me....

Yes. As Highseas says. uncheck all of the other instruments and you will only be left with the compass. It's really geat, except, as i said, for me i took quite a FPS hit and so deleted the program.

Are you keeping your three legged dog as well?

Let me know how you do with the FPS seas. Maybe i did something wrong, but went from 60 into the 30's - both times i tried it, because had done it a year or so ago as well.

    A 980ti, nice!

I have a GTX 970. Maybe I should attempt an over clock.
I only wanted the compass, as I can see everything else fairly well on the dashboard, and thought if I put only the compass on the monitor it might decrease the decrease in for, but didn't seem to make a difference.

One thing I am learning when it comes to computers and gaming is that it's best to get the best one can afford at the time, or wait till you can afford better, instead of attempting to go cheap and get what might be enough. This stuff gets costly!

I was looking at some crosswind rudder pedals the other day and thought "hey, they are not as expensive as I thought! '. Then I realized I was looking at the shipping charges only. ........ lol..... If I went on a starvation diet (which wouldn't hurt me to do) for 2 months, the money I would save would pay for some of the pedals....

Sigh..... maybe a retirement present to myself one day..... working on the freedom 70 retirement plan at the moment. ..

Mmm, I think we are talking about different things.

I ask about customization because I try Maiag "Instruments", via CLoD Data Link for Bf 109, Spit, Fw 190 (DCSW) in smartphone:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...m.mihaig.bf109

Work OK without perceptible FPS hit - what happen in Virtual Cockpit in Windows, specially with elaborated cockpits.

But this Android "Instruments" has not customization options and much information for the small screen of old smarthphone. Their author is "MIA".
    I need only P8 Compass.

I know how make/edit VC for Windows, but Android is... "Greek".

    Re: Virtual Cockpit Monitor

1lokos, sorry, i see what you mean now. I am talking about using the virtual monitor with a tablet for the second monitor, and not the program for an android phone. The program for the phone does not seem to have a compass, and i have no idea how to find, let alone change the program.

They have, due P-8 compass complexity - with moving their scale and the small space available in smartphone screens compass heading is show direct in DG.

    "Automatic" DG calibration.

Totally agree with that... each time I buy a new one I get the absolute best I can afford. With peripherals I've traded on an up over time.

You mentioned crosswinds... i eventually scrapped the cash together (mainkly by going into the loft and spending a day listing stuff i forgot was there onto eBay...) and got a set of Slaw BF109 pedals... and WOW!!!

Pricey for sure, but... in the case of cliffs I'm dead happy I did cos this game has got me well and truly addicted

    Anyhow... back to VC...

Last night, after spending an evening out at the pub and drinking a bit too much even for a Friday, I decided upon getting home that I definitely needed another beer and wouldn't it just be the perfect time to test out VC on that spare monitor and see what effect it has if any on FPS

    Hic !

Of course it was... perfect time... just avoid bumping into the furniture and waking everyone up... Hic !

Fired it all up, ran FRAPS... loaded myself in over London... lots of buildings to generate.... great place for a FPS check

I basically have everything set to max in my settings, except "buildings amount", which I have set to High... if I set that to Unlimited over London FPS can drop as low as 25... which is pretty rubbish. Kinda expect more from a 980ti !!

Anyway... everything maxed but buildings amount to high I get a solid 60fps in the sky (v sync is on) and in really busy London flying on the deck it drops to around 45 or there abouts. Can't say I really notice anything much getting stuttery until under 30 so 45 is plenty !

Came out of game and booted up VC on the spare monitor...

FRAPS pretty much mimicked the above... so as far as the 980ti goes... running VC has no effect at all on frame rates. At least for me.

I'm surprised you found it did with a 970 to be honest...

anyway... after that I spawned in some where over France and got a welcome from Pattle (ausies up... some time in the afternoon).... I was polite enough to explain that I was hammered and so would stay off comms !!

after a bit of hapless drunk flying I realised it was 3am... hahah !!

The only issue I have with VC is that while you can switch gauges on and off if you switch everything off except the compass (my intention... though I may leave the temp gauges up) it's a screen with nothing in it but a small compass... rather have a slightly bigger compass on the screen !!

    either way...

looking forward to the small screen arriving so I can et this up properly...

looking forward to the small screen arriving so I can et this up properly...

pretty excited about my cheapo dashboard !! haha!
If I remember, I adjusted the resolution on the tablet via the resolution adjuster in the VC program, and the compass then filled the screen.

After having deleted it all, I think that I will maybe load it again and try once more and check the FPS yet again.

Ive been trawling the forum on this.

there is an RAF compass file (just the compass !)

Might help out with your FPS to have less going on ?

    Re: Virtual Cockpit Monitor

    Okey Dokie !!

So... "new" (old) 15" widecreen monitor arrived... 1280x800

wanted wide screen because that way it has less height that an equivalent 4:3 monitor...

Its about right as it goes... I wouldn't want it any bigger

Now.... one thing I didn't even think about when I started this was that I want the panel flat (albeit with a slight incline... but effectively flat) on the "deskpit"

only this screen is (unsurprisingly) a TN panel. ahh.....

and when I put it where I wanted I couldn't see a dickie-bird. ahh... damn...

However.... if I rotate it through 180 and use it upside down.... ha !! RESULT !! I can see! Now how lucky was that ?!

Let's cut to the chase... FPS

started out over Southampton on the axis allies server... then just to be sure I did the low level single player over London... loads of buildings to keep the graphics card busy...

I checked with the P8 compass alone (file link for that is above somewhere in this thread) and also with the full hurricane cockpit with everything switched on.

There was no affect on FPS whatsoever in either case. None.

Now I don't know if that's because of the card (980ti) or not... but in both cases I'm getting a solid 60 in the air and about 50 over the town. never drops below 45... and frankly if I wasn't watching the fps counter I doubt I would have noticed at all.

oh also... at this resolution on the mini screen, (and 1920x1080 on the 27") the dials main screen and those on the little one are pretty much identical size !

I plan to just use the P8 compass as everything else I can see in the cockpit on the main screen, I don't need to double everything up.

so to sum up (and just my opinion)

15" wide screen works very well. Good compromise between being able to see dials (if yuo want the lot displayed), and not taking up more room than necessary

Give a thought to IPS, not sure if I just got lucky that I can see if I use the screen upside down... but it wouldn't be very good if not !

I now have a FAR better idea of which direction I'm flying (sure the coast is a great indicator, but fine tuning?... that why the plane has a compass in it !!)

Also... I use ED tracker, and so looking around the stick for me is impossible... some of you Track IR guys may not have this issue?

    So.. there we go.

For me... this is a great solution. I wouldn't go throwing tonnes of cash at it mind... but for the £20 i paid for the screen... yeah... I'm happy with that.

On a side note.... its odd to think that as screens get bigger they get more expensive... and yet also... as screens get smaller... they get more expensive.....

Oh... this one is an "emachines E15T4W-EU"

Right... I'm off to the garage to make a little cradle for it to sit in... like a new born baby...

Glad it's working for you Seas. Excellent!
One question, and apologies if you mentioned this, but is your second monitor hooked up via USB, or wireless, and if wireless, which program are you running it on?
    Ok, shhh..... back to work......

Main screen is HDMI to the graphics card

Second screen DVI to the graphics card

New mini screen VGA.. to a DVI adapter... to the graphics card

It's a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980ti.. with three outputs.. one hdmi and two dvi.

so to answer... All three screens are hard wired direct to the graphics card. No USB and no wireless.

was up tonight... and i looked at the compass... erm... one maybe... hahahah !!!

still flying as i always have... but i think it will become more useful as i get more used to IT

    Re: Virtual Cockpit Monitor

I once again downloaded and fired up VC, with it being wirelessly sent to an 11" tablet.
And after flying for a bit last night and today, i can confirm what i found last time, a drop in FPS from a steady 60 FPS with VC off, to an average of 30 - 40 FPS, though near 60 at times, dropping to high teens over a populated area. Guess the wireless approach is not the best.
Think i'll try an old computer monitor and see how that goes.

be good to have that confirmed...

i tested out an old screen before i went with the "new" (erm... haha) screen...

Wired (for me at least) perfect.

While i was looking into this i saw USB screens as well... but it seemed pretty obvious that if I ran the screen through my 6gb graphics card it would be a zillion times better than running off my mother board via usb and bypassing the card.

    also...

I'm a sucker for hard wired... though I do have one of those portable telephones and that works ok. (the walk about type though not the in-a-car type.. I'm not made of money).

Highseas, is this the live map? If so, how did you manage to get it on one of the other monitors?

    TIA!
