    Disappearing AI-Bombers

    Hi All,

    the addition of AI-bombers on the servers is appreciated very much, especially since we use to fly early Sunday mornings, when things tend to be a little quiet.

    Although I am not flying for the stats, I sometimes wondered a bit about kill credits. It happened rather frequently that I shot at four or five different bombers that went down and did not continue their raid but I was credited with just one kill, or sometimes non at all. In the de-briefing screen in contrast all of the bombers I damaged turned up, often listing substantial damage.
    I tended to explain this to myself, that they somehow managed to make it home or stayed airborne until the mission ended or something like that.

    Yesterday morning I was together with Artist and no one els on the server. We treated us with an order of Dorniers to attack Rochefort. Found them, attacked them etc. But this time each of us followed one of our victims as they spiralled down. And whoooops ... each of them just disappeared in mid air, resulting in no kill message from the server.

    Anybody else noticed something similar?

    Re: Disappearing AI-Bombers

    Hi DerDa.

    I am with you there mate.

    This has happened to me regularly for some time. Not long ago I attacked nine DO 215s en-route to Southend and followed three down one of which was on fire the other two venting from both engines (oil & water). All three just disappeared before crashing. No kills recorded but when the damage screen came up I had significantly damaged eight out of the nine aircraft. The same thing with some DO 17s a few days later!

    I don't know if this what is now supposed to happen as I have not seen this happen until recent weeks. Like you it is more about enjoying the sim rather than stats but not being 'ace' material it is nice to get the odd kill on the main server now and then.

    Let us see if anybody else has encountered this!

    Yep !

    Been with Marlow when its happened, with Vamps also, had it myself too.

    Planes disappearing right in front of your eyes I always thought would be limited to "cheaty rotters" pulling their internet connection... (not that i have ever witnessed anyone pulling such a lame stunt on our servers)

    But AI ? They should stay around die with their boots on.

    EDIT:

    also... I STILL have never seen the welcome screen or the damage screen.

    It's know my IP address... It should turn up some day so I can kick it's arse with my boots on.

    Re: Disappearing AI-Bombers

    Firstly im not gonna make any references to yous lot bullying the spotty skinny kid in glasses.......

    The bombers despawn fast when hit. Its always been this way. When i asked i was told the AI is only there to attract trouble..something to escort, something to attack = furball.

    So - why do they despawn so quickly?.....my guess......ATAG has a stats page. Whether stats are important to you or not they are to some.

    Now - if you aint bothered about stats just knowing the bomber you hit was seen crashing in flames should be enough. If, on the other hand, stats are important to you them there is less chance of the stats being skewed by huge AI killers.

    And, lets face it DO17s are hardly a huge risk to you. With a glass jaw like Frank Bruno, an average spitty pilot should be able to sufficient damage to at least 6 of the 9 to send them to earth every time.

    BUT WHAT ABOUT THE GERMANS i hear you cry...its quite usual to see a lot of wellingtons going down with a credit. So it goes. one of them things - planes with no wings do tend to fall out of the sky quicker i guess. But here at least is some risk here. And if you doubt me, get in a 109 and go find one (or 9, each with 4 rearward firing 303s all looking at you)

    Do 17, He 111, Ju 88 or 87 doesn't matter. It happenes with all of them.
    And as far as I am concerned AI kills would not have to appear at all in the stats.

    But I think I deserve some 'BOOOM', explosion, fire, mayhem ...

    I'd agree with that... I don't give a damn if they turn up in stats or not.

    I do care if they just vanish.

    There is just no way to explain it to my crankey inner monkey....

    You could teach him C# instead!

    And then he could teach me. This is the code (as best I can tell) that has something to do with AI despawning.. MAYBE.

    Code:
        private void destroyPlane(AiAircraft aircraft)
        {
            if (aircraft != null)
                aircraft.Destroy();
        }
    IF any scripters out there could show me how to put a time-out on it I'm more than happy to give it a try! Since the AI bombers were some of my doing, this thread has prompted me to investigate. This is an old problem, and could be a CLODism, but there might be a fix? I'm afraid I'm more of a code "basher" than a writer though. Give me code, I'll make it work eventually. Make me write code, something gonna get screwed up!

    This sim (and the ATAG servers) desperately needs more people to learn how to make MP missions, and more importantly take the time to do it, and then put them on the server. I know, not really anything to with this topic, but just sayin.

    Alas: He won't learn and he won't be told !!

    Programming is way way beyond me.

    though... maybe if I try....

    Code:
        private void destroyMonkey(AiHigheas monkey)
        {
            if (Monkey != null)
                Bermuda.Destroy();
        }
    It's a work in progress you understand....

    The dangerdogz and SOW the TWC chaps seem to know how to get somewhere close

    Still - as is said - AI should be satisfying but not a stat recorded kill in ATAG (or perhaps a differentiated sort of stat).

    Differentiated I would agree but not recorded? I love stats and have to say that shooting down a bomber and having no reward is very harsh.

    Thing is if you shoot at a bomber, they can shoot back and destroy your aircraft. So if you get shot down by an Ai, does that mean it isn't recorded as a stat against you, in other words it doesn't register as a death or your aircraft destroyed? If that is the case then fair enough but if you get a stat against you for a plane loss or pilot death from an AI, why should you not get a kill for taking one down?

    Not sure I understand why?

    Differentiated.

    I don't mean as in no record at all.

    maybe similar to "ground kills"

    I don't much care about the stats but I know others do.

    ha !... my stats would take a plummet from their already pitiful level !!

    so.. just to be clear...

    I don't much care either way !

    haha !!

    Well now i disagree

    AI bombers or otherwise need to be taken down. They are what cases the map to roll.

    In my experience if you get shot down by an AI (fighter,bomber,ship,flak) you get a stat against you. I therefore believe it should work the other way and in some cases it does, but not always.

    In many cases newer players (and some of us old and bold) can only achieve the first kills against AI targets. This can give the impetus to continue and practice and one day maybe triumph against another player.

    Stats are stats, they should not become the 'be all or end all', but do have their place. A kill should be a kill. My opinion............others will have their own, as it should be.

    My point was that since a hurricane or spitfire can take 6 or more Do17s down (and with very little risk) at a go, having these soft kills (and you do get them - not all AI disappear in a puff of smoke) recorded without differentiation could perhaps confuse the stats and take some purpose away from those who like em. 111s proffer more risk to a player as do the Wellingtons but this is still not ridiculously high given most intercepts at alt AND over or near to friendly bases where a peppered fighter can limp back for a landing to with multiple kills for the mission. That of course ignores the presence of a fighter escort.

    And I do get it that an AI Kill can spur players on - i totally get it. And i also agree the bombers shouldn't disappear (and was only reiterating what i was told some 8 months ago when i queried it) as this demotivates the same.

    So sure, a differentiated recorded kill would be ideal. Or even a fighter escort to spice it up and stop the situation were players on a quiet server can rack up 12-18 potential kills in a single mission (remember they can just change sides and order up lunch -knowing exactly where and when the bombers will spawn).
