VKB is proud to announce the production launch of the VKB-Sim ‘Modern Combat Grip’ (MCG).

This controller was developed by AVIAAVTOMATIKA in Russia for Sukhoi’s modernized ‘Flanker’ series of fighter jets, as well as their 5th generation prototypes. VKB engineers adapted the ergonomics of the real ‘Flanker’ grip for the use in flight simulations with only minimal design changes.

The VKB-Sim Modern Combat Grip (MCG) is compatible with the following controllers:

- VKB-Sim Black/Fat Mamba Mk.II/Mk.III
- VKB-Sim Vintage Mamba
- VKB-Sim Gladiator Pro Mk.I/Mk.II

IMO - With the "brake lever" and ministick (axes) as TDC, more press buttons instead only HAT corners result in a more flexible and universal grip - include for "Kosmosima" virpilots - that the DèJáVu F-16'ish grips design used by joysticks in the last two decades.

The absence of the (useful, IMO) "pinky" button is probable due the adjustable height palm rest, this will be difficult to reach for small hands.

I plan to buy it. Assuming this isnt another " two more weeks" product. I love my Mamba, but I'd pretty much given up on VKB's ability to deliver anything they promise without an abrupt direction change which leaves existing customers with nothing more than empty promises.

Now if they deliver this and complete the all metal 109 stick they have been touting for 2+ years I might start trusting them again.

Quick update on the VKB-Sim 'Modern Combat Grip' (MCG) we announced yesterday:
VKB has been looking at feedback on the various discussion forums regarding the lack of a pinky switch on the MCG.
Because of your feedback, the MCG will now receive that much desired extra button.
However, due to the design of the MCG's grip handle, it might have to move up and to the side, but you will get that extra button on the grip!
Also, the 2-way switch on the right side of the MCG's head (meant for your index finger) will be resigned as 4-way switch!

This side 4 way swith is other "inspiration" from F-35 grip.

VKB-Sim ‘Modern Combat Grip’ (MCG) Range of Grips
After VKB’s initial announcement of the MCG Grip back in March of 2017, VKB HQ has gathered a lot of useful feedback from the simulation community across the web. This feedback changed the course of the MCG development and VKB has decided to expand the Modern Combat Grip range to include a total of three variants.

‘Modern Combat Grip’ Design



The real grip was developed by AVIAAVTOMATIKA in Russia for Sukhoi’s modernized Flanker series of fighter jets, as well as their 5th generation prototypes. VKB engineers adapted the ergonomics of the real Flanker grip for the use in flight simulations with only minimal design changes.

All MCG variants share the following design features:
- Made with OMRON and ALPS buttons and switches
- Grip made from ABS plastic (injection molding)
- Contactless ministicks (analog* or digital modes) for Slew Control w/ integrated Push Button
- Trigger 1: Dual-stage trigger
- Trigger 2: Metal trigger (foldable)
- Metal analog* wheel brake lever with contactless MaRS sensor
- Adjustable palm rest
- Quick release fastening
- Optional external twist adapter** (currently under development)

* Except for MCG-TM; Thrustmaster(R) bases only function in digital mode

Modern Combat Grips

In the last Modern Combat Grip announcement, VKB highlighted the three different variants of the MCG currently in development:

- The baseline MCG (14 programmable buttons, 5 analog axes)
- The MCG TM (23 programmable buttons, compatible with Thrustmaster® Warthog™ and Cougar™ bases)
- The MCG Pro (24 programmable buttons, 6 analog axes)

The VKB-Sim MCG Pro

As a reminder, here are the MCG Pro specific highlights:

- Right-hand grip design
- 24 programmable buttons; 6 analog axes
- Compatible with VKB-Sim Gladiator Pro Mk.II, and Gunfighter controllers
- Metal Folding Trigger - Button + Contactless Sensor (axis); programmable
- User-swappable thumb button on grip (either simple push button, or 4-way switch with push); programmable

The next step in the MCG Pro Production:

Based on this initial MCG mockup, VKB HQ will make a few changes to the following items based on their evaluation and testing:

- Folding trigger shape
- Microstick shape
- Brake lever shape
- Minor adjustments to grip shape

Once these changes have been finalized, VKB HQ will make a final version of the mockup, and, if everything checks out, launches the tooling process to get production underway.

About MCG Compatibility:

VKB HQ is planning a special edition of the MCG - the ‘MCG MG’ with a 5-pin connector. This version will allow backwards compatibility with older generation VKB-Sim controllers, such as:

- Black/Fat Mamba Mk.II / Mk.III
- Vintage Mamba
- Gladiator Pro Mk.I
- KingCobra Mk.IV

Besides having a 5-pin connector, the MCG MG is no different than its 3-pin counterparts:
MCG MG (14 programmable buttons, 5 analog axes) and MCG MG Pro (24 programmable buttons, 6 analog axes).

This solution is still up for discussion at VKB HQ, as there’s another option: instead of offering the MCG MG variant with 5-pin connector built in, an adapter could be made available instead.

Such adapter would allow the 3-pin MCG to be adapted to the aforementioned older controllers.
However, an adapter would add around 20mm to the overall height of the MCG grip – which might not be the most desired outcome.

I asked VKB about this and whether it means that support for the original gunfighter was effectively over.

The said no absoluetly not. Its just an improvement to provide a layer of protection to the 3 pin connector. Which makes a lot of sence.
