Anybody who has surfed knows how incredibly dangerous what these guys are doing.

Not very deep.... huge waves.... coral reefs right there...

You can get pounded right against the razor sharp coral and shredded.

Just the weight of the tons of water landing on you and slamming you off the bottom can kill or break bones.

But obviously an incredibly rush being in the pipe and riding it out.

What the girl is singing I can't exactly tell you... not much about surfing.

Chant at the end is something like:

"Time is your boat..."

"The earth is your cake..."

But native French speakers would know a lot more.

The very first time I surfed... in Mexico... I got up on the board the very first time I tried.

I was very excited... huge rush... but then I realized I had no idea how to steer the board.

And the wave took me right over a coral reef... I could see the reef below me a few inches beneath the board... only the extra water from the wave was providing the depth to keep me from slamming into the coral at 20 kmh and getting shredded.

Somehow I made it to the beach without falling... and made sure the next time I caught a wave I was nowhere near that reef.

Have no frikkin idea,

What I can say though is that break, Teahupoo, is not for sissy's and thats a very mild day.
If you look closely on that screen grab from the vid image, look just 6 o clock position from the boats in front of the white water. Notice how the water dips there. Thats water sucking over a coral reef below the actual mean sea level.
Effectively that water depth is maybe at most 1m deep in front of where that wave is breaking. Get it wrong and you pay the rent with blood, properly.

Then upsize


A few thousand tons of water on your head, in maybe 1 m of water, with razor sharp coral below you, happy days, not.

I've seen footage of this break before, but this video just floored me when i first saw it.
It captures the sheer power and immense danger of the ocean.
Love surfing, but riding reef breaks like that is really dangerous and high risk
even for experts who know the break.
No one talks too much about the deaths and injuries.
I can happily get myself in enough trouble just in normal sand bottom beach breaks and 3ft of swell
