Engine Management and Boost?

I'm curious, guys that are flying Spits, are you running full normal Boost (not the 110% Boost cutout) all the time in flight? Or do you reduce throttle and fly at some other Boost setting? Or no Boost? Just curious trying to get better at engine management.

Hi Campbell,
U definitely want to check out the wiki as per Buzz's reply.
The rough guide is u can run at 100% throttle provided ur rpm is appropriate (around 2800 or lower) and watch what u are doing ie keep an eye on temps and airspeed (a steep climb will decrease speed and hence the rate of airflow thru ur radiator). U can also adjust radiator settings to pick up some speed on level flight or a shallow dive. Steep diving will increase ur rpm rapidly so a combination of throttle and rpm control will prevent over revving and burning out ur motor. Eventually u start doing things instinctively in response to engine sound changes and the situation u find urself in. If u want to conserve fuel then lower ur throttle and rpm.
The wiki will give u the baseline and u can experiment from there.

Hi Buzz,

In relation to the wiki about Spitfire engines in particular the 1a 100 I've got a question. Is it currently realistic where you can fly with boost on from start to finish? My specific example is you can run full boost of %110 throttle with 85 or 90% prop pitch and %85 on the radiator and go the whole sortie like that without pooching your engine.

I don't know if that is something you could do to a real Merlin. Perhaps a 10 hour engine but after 100 it would be more prone to failure?

I think it was you or perhaps one of the SoW fellas that mentioned a personal plane mod with hours on the aircraft. Pretty neat but I suppose not too practical for pub play. A random engine disintegration could be a buzzkill.
Now I'm just rambling.

Anyway, will the engine management in this regard stay the same or can we expect some sort of changes? Like I said this is a real question I don't know enough about proper historical merlin management.

That's how I cut my teeth! Then when you get the knack for it you switch to 109s so you can be on the short side and have more targets! Now you can fly everything and the game never gets boring.

I can even fly bombers just not level bombing.

If you see Drock on and it's Mae West jumping in an 88 is worth it.
