    To all my Scottish friend

I am planing a vacation with my wife at the end of may and I would like to have input about what not to miss in Scotland. We love the good food, the wine and of course single malt. My wife love to take pictures and we love anything that have historical and cultural meaning.

    I'm open for your suggestions

    Midgies!!!!! Eeeeeek!!!

The wee beasties appear mid-late May and can be a proper nuisance in the Highlands.

    Lew's advice is very good.

    Good !!

Edinburgh is one of the friendliest places i have ever been to.

And it's a stunning town visaully as well.

Stirling wasnt so much. I only went there once mind so i may have placed it wrong on my "scale of cozy"... but...

My wife did the highlands way way before i met her, for a month in a beat up VW Beetle, and still says it was just incredible. (she did it again the year after Brave Heart was released and said it was utter rubbish that time). I've not been. But it's on my to do list.

Re: To all my Scottish friend

Hi dB....I don't know if you like walking but a few years ago my wife and I walked 'The Great Glen Way.'

    http://www.greatglenway.org/

This is a 73 long distance path that runs along the natural fault line that splits Scotland nearly in two. It starts in the west at Fort William and ends at Inverness in the west. Yes, the scottish midges have a very bad reputation but when we walked in August we didn't see a single midge and it only rained once during a whole week of walking! (I'm not an expert but I suspect the midges could be a little more active in May.)

You may not have time to do the whole 73 mile distance but you could walk around Loch Ness which is one of the most beautiful and famous parts....just don't get eaten by the monster!

Inverness is also a beautiful city.....and, of course, Edinburgh is a very interesting city and well worth a visit.

If you like climbing you could set yourself the challenge of climbing Ben Nevis.

    http://www.bennevis.org/

My wife and I climbed this mountain the day before we started our Great Glen walk and it was tough...nearly killed me! Fantastic views from the top, if the weather is clear enough. It's only just over 4400 feet but it is a challenge. However, I'm sure a reasonably fit ATAG pilot would have no difficulty at all!

If you like golf (I don't) don't forget Scotland claims to have invented the game and they have lots of famous courses! I'm sure whatever you do you will have a good time. Can we have a full report on your return, please? have fun and salute!

Re: To all my Scottish friend

I had one Scottish great-great-Grandfather for whose diluted genes I am very grateful, (no idea what his name was though), so I'm totally qualified to answer this thread. Plus I spent much time on holiday in Scotland when I was younger, risking my life wandering around on various mountain ranges.

If you love trains, and some people do! you might enjoy some of the amazing Scottish railways; this route is most spectacular!

    https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Glas...!3e3!5i3?hl=en

For scenic splendour unmatched the Isle of Skye is a great place for photography as well as exploration on foot, for the black mountains and the seaside and the strange rocks are truly spectacular.

Actually almost anywhere in Scotland is just terrific. Plan a visit of about two months minimum to enjoy the bare basics of the best country in Europe!

Bonditaria, if like to stumble over things like this (Spitfire Mk 1 engine) on a nice beach walk you have to go way up in the north of Scotland. Get a hotel room at the Old School Hotel in Kinlochbervie and visit Sandwood Bay Beach. (trekking outfit recommended). South of Kinlochbervie is a little town called Gairloch that's where the Hebridean Whale Cruises are located. They drive you in speed boats right between dolphins and Orcas. Very exiting! And if you don't get enough of sea and sand take a look at the Durness Area and take a walk from Balnakeil along the sandy coast.
    IMG_0268.jpg

A pretty good base camp for long highlands walks is Fort William.
    IMG_0189.JPG

And if you are not fancy for a walk: There are Land Rover Tours right from Piitlochry into the Highlands. I recommend the Torrdarach House as B&B. Very, very friendly owner, a Scottish/Austrian couple.

If you don't have enough time but want to get "a feeling" of Scotland stay for a few days on the Isle of Arran. Its like a mini Scotland with beaches, boat tours, lowlands, highlands, castles and a whiskey distillery. Like we do this year

You cant go wrong with edinburgh. Great pubs and pretty to do... If you need any recs let me know. If you're going further afield try the west coast. Fro fort willing you can follow the road to the Isles. Beautiful beaches between arisaig and mallaig. Camusdaroch beach was used in local hero.
Im from fife, just north of edinburgh. Stuart andrews and the finding villages of the easy neuk of fife are also worth a visit. Great restarants The Peat Inn and The Cellar in Anstruther which is also home to any award winding fish an chip shop.

As an ex teacher nothing 'warms the cockles' more than seeing a Dad's pride in his children's achievements! Lovely stuff! Well done, Pumpkin!

We Red's had better watch out! Once she joins JG 52 she might use those moves on us! Many congrats, Mindle! That girl's going to go far! Salute!
