INAUGUAL BOOMER BLITZ - SATURDAY 20th MAY @2000 UTC (2100 LONDON TIME)

On Saturday 20th May, we are planning our first “Boomer Blitz”. It will be a BLUE event but those of you who fly red normally are welcomed and even encouraged to come and try" a bit of the other" (just remember to leave some fighter pilots at home - you'll need em!)

We will not have the luxury of knowing our target until the very last moment because we are just slotting into the regular server so we must prepare for all eventualities.

Ideally we’d like it if JU88s are taken by whoever can fly them to best maximise of chances of success. However, we know that not everyone will have the experience/confidence required and so 110s and perhaps even some Ju87s will also be available.

9./JG52 have kindly offered to provide fighter escort and I hope we will also be joined by elements of JG4. There is a standing invite to all fighter pilots to join us.

If the raid is level bombing, we will have a master bomber who will assist new bomber pilots with the lofte sight. 110s and 87s will blind drop in co-ordination with the lead 88s through close formation order in such cases.

To best ensure flexibility, we ask that you prepare the loadout for your chosen aircraft PRIOR to the event – this can be done at your leisure in a mission server by setting the load out for the type and spawning in. One done for an aircraft type it should become the default load out unless changed again.

    The requested bomb loadout is:

    SC types (50, 250, 500) – Low Level Fuses – 14 second delays.

This will ensure that, whatever the mission, we have the flexibility to carry it out.

Also be sure that you have available the means to:

    • open bomb-bay doors
    • set the drop type
    • select the bomb bay
    • set series length
    • ARM YOUR BOMBS!!

Roistering will commence at 1930 UTC (2030 London Time) with take off at 2000 UTC (2100 London Time).

A coms channel has kindly been set up for us on the main ATAG TS by D-Rock. This is called “Casual BOOmers” and can be found at the start of the squadron lists. We will use this channel for pre raid briefing and then as the main bomber channel for the raid.

No Sign up required. Just be in the TS channel between as soon as you can after 1930 UTC (2030 London Time).

Remember – this is fun – no one is gonna huff and puff if you stuff your 88 on take off or screw the bomb run up. That said, if you have never done this before – trust me – its no soft option. SO, if you are thinking of coming along, get an hour in your aircraft of choice first at least.

Finally – if you can set up your controls for gunner positions do so. Then, even if you are shot down you can hop into another aircraft and be their gunner.

I hope to see you all next Saturday!

    S!

Hopefully on the night there will be a "pro" who can call out the settings to help. But keeping all the dials around the green line (obviously) plays it safe.

Look forward to flying with you!

PS - if you want to link up for a bit of pre event practice just pm me.

I know we are at the mercy of the server with stuff like maps, targets, plane sets and even server slots but I think its the best way to muster participation without any special allowance.

I just hope everyone else bears us in mind and doesn't take out a target we are on route to. Ive been trying to gather up the intel on where AI raids go in case they are ordered so we can pick targets that are not on their list but given the number of maps and targets its a task. I'm hoping the experience of regular bomber pilots will come to the fore with a "lets go here by this route".

I'm certain we will have lots of opportunity no matter what.

    I know that feeling.

If you remove the front gun (Change the loadout so nose gun is 'empty') you can see the 'ATA' dials clearly. Past a certain altitude, it's important to watch these.

I'm still learning the Ju88 myself - I think it gets upset past a certain altitude if these pass 1.3 ish.

You can also make the MG different and move it from the front gunner position, then you see the instruments also sufficiently. And you have the advantage that you can see better from the front gunner's position forward and can move the angle of your sight ... And don't go much too long on orange mode ...

most things get upset past a certain altitude if the ATA passes 1.3 for any length of time!

My magic numbers of a bust free (if slightly slower) flight are 1.1 ata and 2100-2200 rpm. You can go higher for periods of time nad hight alts but hey, why the rush Mr Hare, sit back and enjoy the complete absence of a view despite sittin in a greenhouse and twiddle with the lofte.

Re: INAUGUAL BOOMER BLITZ - SATURDAY 20th MAY @2000 UTC (2100 LONDON TIME)

So, I have all the controls setup and seem to be able to take off, land and even fly the thing (occasionally) without blowing the engines up but the bombing is beyond me (and I'm sure for a few other) so far.

I would love to setup a time (Before the event) for someone to take me (and any others who want to) through the actual bombing process. Navigation is not an issue as we will be in formation and I'll just follow the pack but I've never flown ANY Axis planes and a Blennie bombing is easy compared to this (no select bay, select series, select which underpants to wear etc).

Anyone willing to step up and set a time for a bit of instruction?

I'm happy to take you though the basics but I'm no Hanseat! when are you about?

For next week I wouldnt worry to much - as long as you can set the lofte altitude, speed and slew whilst flying its good enough. If we level bomb we will have a master bomber who will tell you what to dial in and where you crosshairs should be for release.

This is a good starting point

    https://theairtacticalassaultgroup.c...ls/lotfe7.html

to help calculate stuff quickly but only tends to be good for airfields. For things like RDF I used to refer to real OS maps for target height and whilst it seemed to work most of the time it could just as much been luck. There's a lot of differing experience out there about what works best but something does cos some of those 88s can hit a pickle jar from 5K.

If you are flying a bomber, get your skills honed. This is gonna be fun.

Please use a touch of brevity when on TS. Boosterdog has priority on comms.

These raids work best with one Chief, and the rest Indians. Be willing to follow orders without question.

If you need still need help with the 88, give me a PM.

Another good source of info for all bombers is ATAG_Torric. He's a CoD encyclopedia, and always willing to help.

    See you there.

forgive me tgif if I misunderstand but to clarify

"curs" or a "cur" is an obscure English expression usually meanng mangy or otherwise aggressive and unkempt mongrel dog that's (very rarely, outside of Brighton) sometimes used to call into question a person's character. Think "you dog" but add maybe a skin condition and dysfunctional personality into the mix. Its actually just a term for mongrel or cross breed but its meaning has been added to over time when used as an insult.

In popular culture its a phrase that I would imagine even Dickens thought old fashioned but would have likely come back into fashion during the inter war years due to the popular writing of people like PG Wodehouse et al.

To use it properly one must first be a part of the Upper Class but have no visible means of independent income, dress in plus fours or a blazer, smoke a lot and, most importantly possess a male friend with a doubled barrelled surname who you call "squiffy" or similar.

Without these social pre-requisites (for instance if it were said by a docksman or factory worker) the insult would seem out of place and ridiculous.

With it - although ludicrously pompous - it fits a stereotype that is both loved and reviled by the common Englishman and oddly one even the lowliest of us (me) often revert to when being "archetypally English", either for our own amusement or to help reinforce the prejudicial imaginings of the descendants of our former colonies about our general culture.

    hope this helps
