Any chance of the Westland Whirlwind?

The thing was fast, manoeuvrable, extremely well armed and operational in the Battle of Britain. It could carry bombs and carry out Rodeos and Fighter Sweeps over France, is there any chance we could see this plane in TF.5 or 6?

Yeah...probably...but only after the Mosquito, FW190, Tempest, P51, Me262, F4U, Zero,...etc....I am sure you get the idea...

Joking aside...to save the boffins at TFS from coming into another 'Can we have...' thread...All these aircraft take mountains of man hours to bring to fruition...We are talking many months and sometimes years of work by highly skilled modders...Other theatres beckon way before any other BOB aircraft are looked at in the future...

As a new player here you are probably not aware that the next theatre will be the Tubruk desert theatre...Check the TFS facebook page or the TF threads amongst these forums to see what is going on with future aircraft...You have a bit of catching up to speed to do...

Re: Any chance of the Westland Whirlwind?

Would love to do this aircraft, have thought very carefully about it... but there are a number of obstacles.

    - There are no existing Whirlwinds... which makes it very difficult to accurately create 3D models... you have to rely on old smudged and not very clear B&W photos.

    - There is limited performance data on the aircraft. (I mean REALLY detailed performance data which is what we need)

Plus of course, there is the fact this was not a heavily produced aircraft... it didn't see much service.

And there would not likely be that many people who would be interested in flying it.

And finally, there are a lot of other types which are much higher on the priority list.

So to be honest... chances are fairly remote.

I do completely understand why it's unlikely, I'm assuming that just the tweaks to the base Spitfire I to make a VB themselves take an inordinate amount of work. I have so much respect for TF! I've known about TF 5.0 for a while now, I've actually owned the game for something like four years, but only really got involved with it recently. I am, however, extremely excited for Tobruk.

One question I have on my mind is what do the Hispano cannons sound like? I mean they're there on the Beau but they're obscured almost completely by the .303s.

Oh I would fly it, badly but fly it I would. That being said understand completely why it won't happen for all the valid reasons given.

Considering debt is the only thing I'm incurring as a result of my involvement with TF, not sure where the lucrative comes in.

Re: Any chance of the Westland Whirlwind?

One of my great disappointments with Il46 was that a group in New Zealand had a Whirlwind nearly ready to be included in the modded game, but it was never finished. The big earthquake hit and the data was all lost. The modeling looked beautiful.

I would love to see the Whirlwind, but as it's already been stated, it's unlikely to happen

These are the full performance tests undertaken by the RAE of the Whirlwind, not sure how to access them but hey ho...something to think about after 5.0

Since I first posted here I have gained access to some of these tests... we don't stop researching even if the aircraft is not in our plans.

The real issue as far as making these rare aircraft types is the 3D work... TF simply does not have enough professional level 3D modelers to allow us to divert resources to projects which would not be a huge attraction for most players.

If we get a big influx of new modelers, then the chances improve... and of course we are always glad to receive applications from those 3D modelers who are experienced or those who are promising students.

They should have a good working level of skill with Blender or Autodesk 3DMax. (Blender is free)

A guy did Whirlwind FB Mk.II for IL-2: 46 - look at SAS, an option for someone interested in fly in this obscure, unimportant plane.

Re: Any chance of the Westland Whirlwind?

I wouldn't pay too much attention to IL2 1946 ballistics Tibb's, they were rather liberal with their interpretations shall we say, you may recall the Mg151 flipping aircraft upside down with a hit on a wing .

CloD does a better job in most respects but even then you have to factor in game physics do not match up to reality in any game.

I would love to see the Whirlwind but whilst they operated up to 1943 with no developments before retirement they were superseded by Typhoons, it would be far better to see the Typhoon alongside the Fw190 in a later patch than put resources into an airframe that would be a slightly faster more nible Beaufighter with only 60rds per gun, and barely anyone flies that!

A faster and more nimble Beaufighter?
    Carrying bombs even?

    I wouldn't fly anything else!

I have a great deal of plans/blueprints, etc. of the Whirlwind and some Spitfire types on hand, I've even got a fair deal of experience with Blender and some with 3ds MAX/GMAX. At some point in the future I may lend any skills I've learned to TF if it's of any help !

It's great that some alternative aircraft are being researched as well!

Hmm... I might be visiting a Mossie/Hurricane restoration next week to get accurate measurements for other projects. Mayybee I can help accelerate chances by modelling the Mossie for TF6.0? hehe

    Soo busy though!

    Sounds most interesting Zeb.

Have to say that I would be most interested in any cockpit dimensions you might get for the mozzie

The mosquito has a few advantages over Westland Whirlwind. Here you have a chap to talk to while you are on a trip to prisons and cities over the mainland in house-roof height, and the coffee does not lean itself into the cup.
Have a good day out there.
