Always a terrible thing to read on the news, no matter why, where or who.

I am in France, where unfortunately my dear old Dad has been in hospital in Beziers, in the south. He's in no danger now and has received wonderful treatment. We fly home tomorrow.

The TV in Dad's hospital room was running continuous coverage of Manchester, in French of course and a quote at the bottom of the screen was saying: ' The People of Manchester and Paris are as one and we go forward together.'

It's good to know that before anything else we share a common humanity. The French were very sympathetic in their support.
    Salute, All.

Yes, Marlow, I agree that the majority do, thankfully, share a "common humanity".

Hope your father has a full return to good health.

    Re: Manchester

This ‘war’ against innocent people and kids, whether in Manchester, Paris, Berlin or anywhere else in the world makes me sick.
„appalling, sickening cowardice“ that’s just what it is.

It is difficult to stay civilised in the face of this. But that is the only way to beat them.

ISIS has already lost its reputation in any country where they held power or seized control.

They are universally hated in Iraq and Syria... they only hold their strongholds because of enforced terror, and those enclaves will fall soon.

In Libya, they are also being driven out.

It is only countries where their rule has not actually been experienced that they have any credibility... for example they are on the rise in Indonesia.

The worst thing we can do is to start a '...war against Muslims'... and persecute them, this will just give them new recruits.

What is needed is education and community outreach... anti terrorism centers in Muslim population areas staffed by Muslims who can provide facts to counter the myths and lies on the internet as well as a place to report concerns. The best source of information on terrorism is the community itself... they can spot the persons who are likely to commit these acts.

    Re: Manchester

Random (and not so random) acts of violence against populations will never end. Its been a human condition since forever.

Its ISIS now, before Al Queda. Its been far right and far left. Its been cultist, para military, religious, anti religious, ethnicity based, gender based, sexuality based, state sponsored, organised and totally unilateral.

There will always be those vulnerable to radicalisation who fall out of the safety nets and there will always be someone waiting somewhere to exploit them be it by strapping explosives to them or by showing them that all you need is a cleaver, a cell phone and the freedom that modern democratic society demands. And there will always be those who self radicalise. And somewhere, there will always be an injustice, perceived or real, that provides the tinder.

Prayers for the killed, the wounded, and the families torn apart by this horrific and cruel act of terrorism. Some good thoughts have been expressed in this thread, and it makes me proud to be a member of this community.

    Be safe, everyone.
