Bf-109 G6 and some other stuff

Did a quick visit to the Oz War memorial recently and took some photos of a few things including the BF-109 G6 that is on display. Thought i might share it for those who havent visited/seen it before. Also took some other photos of G-George and the Tobruk diorama which i will post as well.

Re: Bf-109 G6 and some other stuff

That G-6 may or may not have had its cockpit hood rebuilt after its initial production... G-6's did not have the Erla Haube cockpit as a standard on G-6's coming off the production line in May of '44.

From my information the G-14 was the first model to have it standard.

Usually when older model G's were rebuilt, they replaced the original framed cockpit with the Erla Haube version, plus the more aerodynamic cowlings to replace the 'Bubos' over the MG13's.

I highly recommend the Australian War Memorial to everyone. It has a film about RAAF aircrew in Bomber Command, a film about the Japanese submarine attack on Sydney Harbour, and a film about the Australian Flying Corps in WWI, directed by Peter Jackson.

The AWM also has the world's only surviving A7V, one of the world's only surviving Albatros D.Vas, Kaigun-chūi Saburo Sakai's A6M2, an S.E.5a, Pfalz D.XII, Me-163, Me-262, Spitfire Mk. IIa, UH-1, MiG-15 fuselage, CAC Mustang, P-40 E, Carro Veloce CV-33, a gun turret from SMS Emden, a gun turret from HMAS Sydney I, and two halves of two Japanese midget submarines.

I think that G6 is one of the only surviving 109's still wearing its original paint.

    Great stuff Ezzie,

It's a real buzz getting up close and personal with these old warbirds. They still look awesome even after 80 years. So much respect for the bravery of those guys who used to fly them in anger, on both sides.

Maybe you missed this post but, just in case you're planning a trip to London soon, Biggin Hill is a must for any CLOD pilot....

Very cool. I visited the RAF museum just outside London last July; looks like there is a military museum in Berlin that I will check out in September. Maybe I'll get to visit this one some day too! Thanks for sharing the pics!!

Awesome stuff! Anybody visiting in South Africa, must see the War Museum in Johannesburg. We've got some wonderful displays of war craft and other war memorials.

It's the angle, the information plaque is blocking our view of the wingtip here.

Is this an early or late G6? One can't see the tail in the photo.
