    combat practice anyone?

ive been back playing for a couple of week now, never really got into previoulsy because my computer sucked but now im back..
i spend most of my time flying round listening to coms and trying to get in on the action but am still learning to navigate atm so have seen very little of it..

i was wondering if there is anyone else in a simialr position with almost no experience at fighting who wants to get on a server with me and we can meet up at a certian grid ref and altitude and get some dogfighting practice against each other?

then when we do finally learn to find the action, or it finds us, we will be a bit more familar in combat situations..

so if anyone fancies it let me know here or send me a pm...dont worry if you're not that good, i promise you wont find a less experienced fighter than me on this game

Hi Edgy....I'd be glad to come up with you and 'do some stuff.' We can do some map familiarisation and some combat training. I've been at the sim for about a year and a half now so should be better than I am. I have good periods and then **&^^^$$~~ periods, if you know what I mean. But as our friend Lewis says, 'it's about the fun' and being retired, now, I might be able to fit in with you time wise. Fingers crossed. Salute!

    Hi Edgy,

Like my good mate Marlow, I'm happy to help.

I fly mostly Red, and useful when Blue.

What part of tge world are you in as it would be good to kjow the timezone and best times to try and meet up.

Leadfarm is a good spot for practice, and the TWC mission server to wing up and go up against aggressive AI until you are confident to give it a red hot go against real peeps.

I'm pretty much rubbish, but I'm happy to help as well.

Happy to fly relatively sedately as bait with one of these fine other chaps talking you through my inevitable airbourne mugging...

Edgy...Do you use 'tab - 7 - 1' in the ATAG server?....This will tell you were your nearest enemy fighter is within 15 miles...There's a free macro that a lot of us use that will enable you to just click one key....If the enemy is within a mile of you then it is invisible to this radar...but I click this every 15 to 30 seconds in the game so I am less likely to be caught napping...

Thanks Marlow, thanks for your reply.. If you have been playing a year and a half i suspect you will be way above my level, my forum account maybe a few years old but i have only a few weeks flying experience under my belt and not much of that in realistic mode..however i am more than happy to take up you're offer if you want to school me a little..

Hello Pattle, thanks for your offer to help, i'm in the uk but my sleep pattern is all over the place due to working shifts... i've got 4 days off after tonight though so i can play pretty much when i want while i'm off..

I will happily fly against more experienced players and dont mind getting beat.. it's what makes you better...but the reason i aimed my post at newer players was because we both get something from it..i probably would not be much of a challenge or offer much competetivness against an experienced player and i although i'm greatful of offers from better players and will happily fly with them..i dont expect people to give up their time to give me lessons or to serve as target practice for me because its not much fun for the teacher..

Hello Highseas, thanks.. would be good to do so, i would prefer it if you shot some bullets at me too...so i can learn to avoid them when i'm playing against those yellow nose's...

Ahh Lewis, thanks again..i was only wondering about this last night..
Yes i do use tab, 7-1...am starting to use it very often so i know when i'm in danger and i was wondering if i could bind it to a button...i even thought about looking for software that would help me do that...and then you posted this...top guy.. thanks mate..

i didnt know about the 1 mile thing, i think i heard on comms though that flying below 1500ft makes you invisible to radar?

    Re: combat practice anyone?

    Hi Edgy,

When I started about 12 months ago, I hadn't flown on line since 1998, not played a flight sim for about 10 years.

I learnt a hell of a lot flying with more experienced guys.

When TWC Brett first kicked off a while back, I spent a good amount of time with him helping out. Whether it is me, or any of the much better guys getting about, my recommendation is fly and learn from then.

Hopefully one day, you will return the favour to a new player, asking for some help.

Playing at the hardest level on the ATAG server takes some practice and dedication. You will fail often, and learn something from that every time. That's the 'slight' addiction of it all.

And just when you think you are getting it, an opposing pilot will remind you that there is a way to go.

We all have a way to go, the distance is just shorter for some

    Re: combat practice anyone?

My first piece of honest advice is concerning Teamspeak go up a channel in atag like help or training and someone will pop in on you asking what you need and you can go from there as we are a worldwide group someone is always lurking about (Like Pat or Seas Lurking) if they offer you candy or cookies do not accept!! In all seriousness if they ask to help you get sorted any agenda then by all means do so. You will make some great friends and probably get coaxed into a Squadron with time and practice you to0 will become a terror in the skies.<S> Fatal

Yes...that's correct...I should have mentioned that in my post...You can fly under this radar...but is obviously still risky...Fighters escorting bombers that are wave hoping have to fly as low too making them a bit vulnerable and inefficient but obviously if they go for altitude then may give the position away to the enemy...~S~

    Hello Edgy!

I also gladly fly with you and try to show you the ropes, if you want.
Planes - 109s, Spits, Hurricanes. Also 110s - however I don't have that much experience in those.
And of course some general combat flying tips.

PM me and we'll set smth up.

    Re: combat practice anyone?

Some great advice here Edgy. I spent the first few months winging up with Pattle and if it wasn't for him I would probably have jacked it in. He spent a LOT of time coaching me and is one of the best guys to get involved with. He trained me to the point where I joined TWC and that is where I met Fatal. Two of the best guys in the community and two finer teachers, you will struggle to find.

For my 2 cents id add that there is no rush to join a squad. If you do, its fun but its also a commitment and until you settle on an fav aircraft (and this can change), a side (and this can change) and find out what you like doing and what you don't like doing (yup....) you may not get the most out of it.

Some people are set from the get go, some aint.

Id suggest having a go at everything including ground attack and bombing. Id also suggest looking at using TS to find regular but casual wingmen (like you are doing now) and other loose collectives as an alternative to squads initially and until you get settled.

    Mainly though - have fun!

    Re: combat practice anyone?

    Hi there Edgy.

Seems like you've got a whole lot of offers to help already. Just goes to show what this community is all about.

I would like to throw my hat in the ring as it were, and say that I would be more than happy to join you for a bit of practice on one of the quieter servers if you want. God knows I need all the practice I can get myself, as a glance at my stats this month (or any other month for that matter) will confirm.

I started at about the same time as Marlow, Highseas and one or two others that I now fly with regularly, but take it from one who knows, having that experience certainly doesn't automatically mean you become a good sim pilot

If however you would like help from someone who is actually good at this, then there are many good pilots who have posted above. I have flown many times with Pattle, and as Brett has said both Pat and Fatal are indeed two of the best teachers around

yeah at some point, probably not in the too distant future i want to join a squad..but i'd prefer to get a slighly better understanding of it when i will serve as an asset instead of a hinderance..

i'm taking onbaord what you say about bombing etc, ive never really thought of trying it but i think i should, ..it will help me as a fighter knowing more about the bombers role too i think..what would be a good plane to try offline just to get used to taking off etc?

Lead Farm is a great server to practice on.

It is target rich, and the AI fighters are non aggressive, so you can practice your angle of attack and try out gun convergences etc, and attacking bombers you have to avoid the return fire.

However, as klu.peete said , there are often real players on, so you have to have your wits about you, although I see that you want a challenge anyway.

Also Lead Farm is an excellent server to practice dog fighting with someone. I have done this myself a few times. There are only 3 airfields a side on which to spawn. You take off from your side, your sparring partner takes off from the other side and you arrange to meet over the ships mid channel

However, as klu.peete said , there are often real players on, so you have to have your wits about you, although I see that you want a challenge anyway.

Also Lead Farm is an excellent server to practice dog fighting with someone. I have done this myself a few times. There are only 3 airfields a side on which to spawn. You take off from your side, your sparring partner takes off from the other side and you arrange to meet over the ships mid channel
ahh yeah that sounds very useful, perfect for my needs with a bit of everything..i will give that a try, thanks

    Re: combat practice anyone?

    Hi Edgy

I'm happy to help out if I can . UK time zone and usually around in the evenings around 9.00pm.

Teamspeak would be a big help if you can get on it . All the guys on this thread use it.

Feel free to PM me anytime.

Theres no rush to go multi engines yet- get used to a single type first like the Hurri or 109E (taste dependent). That'll take you a a bit of time in itself and you'll learn a lot of transferrable game skills such as nav and judging landings etc, Piling into a multi, even a simple one like the Blenni without some grounding will only frustrate you. When you are ready though the Blenheim is probably the least complicated and very very nice to fly.

My point about joining a squad is to do so when you you've given the game some time. Theres nothing worse that being welcomed and helped and hugged only to find 3 months down the line you picked the wrong plane or side and you're getting itchy feet.

    Hi Edgy

Was good to see you on the server last night and also speak to you , all be it briefly , on TeamSpeak .

How did you find it ? I thought it was a great map with plenty of action and nice to see so many fellow enthusiasts in the game.

I hope you enjoyed it and didn't find it to confusing/demanding .

I think it takes a lot of courage to jump in like that when there are a lot of more experienced guys around .

I hope it won't be long before we see you again.

    Hey DT,

Good to see another aussie onboard. I struggle to find time to play during the week but some aussies do fly mid week in the evenings so someone will hopefully be along to help out.

Which side and what aircraft are you thinking of flying first?

    Ezzie
