    Am I right in thinking the Germans have captured a Spitfire and put a DB601 in it?

    Yes, they were looking at the possibility of manufacturing a Spitfire powered by a DB601.

    But it would have been much more costly than making a 109.

    There were some aspects of the performance of the Daimler Spit which were better... most notably high altitude.

    Pretty good skin/frame buckling forward of the elevator (ignoring the paint). Darned pilots breaking planes again!
