they weren't even close to making a bomb, dodged a bullet on that one. the bigger question was how much werner heisenberg held back from actually making one.

Whether they were close to building a bomb or not does not change the fact that even the slightest possibility constituted a threat that could not be ignored.
'Their mission – codenamed FRESHMAN – was launched on the orders of Winston Churchill who, together with US president Roosevelt, feared that Nazi Germany was two years ahead in the race to build the atom bomb.'
'Britain’s nuclear experts – working under the cover name of Tube Alloys - had warned of the seemingly impossible. Britain should prepare for an attack by Nazi Germany using “fission products”; the by-products of a working nuclear reactor engineered into a crude radiation bomb.'
I agree with you that it would be interesting to know whether Werner Heisenberg deliberately kept information back at the time - it is my belief that he probably did.

I vaguely recall a documentary or 2 (and perhaps even a movie of a raid?) about/on the heavy water facility.
If it's brown, shoot it down!

Thank you for posting that, I remember seeing this as 'The Saboteurs' when it was on the TV a couple of years ago - good little series!

One of the most daring clandestine operations of World War II was the 1944 sinking of the Norwegian ferry Hydro with its cargo of “heavy water” destined for the Nazi's secret atomic bomb project. Although the mission was declared a success, no one has ever established if the special shipment was actually on board.
EPISODE GUIDE
Hitler's Sunken Secret
Examines the efforts made by WWII allied forces to prevent Nazis from accessing heavy water, which was crucial for the development of nuclear weapons.

Thank you Vlerkies, a great little documentary and one I had not seen before.
'The Sabateurs' series nicely ties these bits together as it begins with operation Freshman and ends with the sinking of the 'Hydro'.
