Missed this thread...and only today became aware of this movie...My guess is it'll be a talky...
When I saw the title I thought it was a movie about the destruction of the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir...so was looking forward to that...But not sure as the trailer seems to be more about the beginning of the war...
Look forward to seeing it either way...but it'll have to be good to beat Brendan Gleesons 'Into the Storm'...which is a corker of a movie...and must see if you haven't already...

We keep getting WWII movies released which mirror the subject of CLIFFS OF DOVER and get people excited about that period of history... can't be a bad thing.
They need Major setback to fix the the 1942 roundel on the DC3 though !

Saw this film yesterday with the wifey...
Pretty much what it says on the box...a talky right through...Interesting and watchable...Oldman is brilliant as Churchill and Ben Mendelson is total genius in his portrayal of King George...Kristin Thomas as 'Clemmy' is beautifully acted...Interesting conversation between Churchill (in the toilet) and Roosevelt...but the interaction between Mendelson and Oldman is a powerful and wonderful to watch...
I haven't seen Mendelson do a bad job...The first time I saw him was in 'Animal Kingdom'...That is a must watch film for me...If you haven't seen it then I recommend it...
A single shot showing the boats leaving Dover (probably CGI) gives more of the scale than 'Dunkirk' did...I wondered why they never used CGI for a shot or two in that film just for scale?
Conclusion: If you aren't that into the historical political aspect of this stuff...then a no go...If you like the British history and if you like watching a masterclass of acting all round then I recommend seeing this...
I enjoyed it...

just saw it a town over, excellent 9/10, would have given it a 10/10 but the "political Correctness" lost a point.
It should win best picture and oldman win best actor.

I liked it. A well acted period piece drama, Brought out the tenuous grasp Churchill had on power in those early days.

Saw 'Darkest Hour' the other day. Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant! Yes, Lew's right....it is 'all words' but I didn't lose interest for a second. Gary Oldham is a huge Tour de Force!!! Salute!
P.s Looks like the man can dance, too....respect! LoL!
Thanks for the thumbs up guys.
I am going to see it this w/e, and hope to take my kids. My son knows about the BoB, and I can educate my daughter on the basics of the time, on the way to the show.
It's unfortunate that I feel a need to see it sooner rather than later because I can't tell how long it will be in the theatre since it doesn't, far as I know, have a costumed character in it.....
"If you want to fly, give up everything that weighs you down"......
Hmm Farley...I'm not sure the kids will like it...You might need to take a pillow each for them...

Lew - I finally saw Darkest Hour last night. It is now streaming on Amazon prime for $5.99. I thought it was great acting and historical insight into political events of the period. As I have mention in thread "Least We Forget", my Uncle was with the Canadian forces withdrawal from France a couple of weeks later on 17 May in "Operation Aerial" (Brest).
In my post a month or so I go I provided the back story on Churchill's toilet phone call to Rosevellt.
