    Sim chair!

Saw this on Reddit and just had to share. How many of you are working on a similar DIY project? I think I remember BlacKnight mentioning something along these lines? I would tag him if I knew how :p

I fly in the kitchen on our home PC...I'd have to use the chair for eating and socialising in the kitchen too...I'll ask the Missus if she's ok with that!

Unpainted and unfinnished, made by steel for easier welding , the weight of that thing must be out of this world. A cheap and good idea for now, until you move. A impossible task taking that with you.
If I was to build that with those materials in that size I would have made it 360 degrees , the limitations made here is not needed since it oviously aint going into a house and it is already huge. Not well planned at all in my opinions

I disagree, for starters, from what I can see, it can be broken down in at least 3 parts (the base/strut, the moving arm and the swing basket), as for it being bare metal? Does a powder coat really make it function better?
You are gonna need some weight and sturdy materials to prevent that thing from tipping over AND/OR bending and flexing with a 1xx/2xx lbs person in it

and 360 sounds nice, but you'll have to find some way to achieve connections between the parts that are wired and the PC without the cables tying you to the rig and hanging you
You're gonna need something that can "slide" the electric connections to keep in contact and are not permanently connected between the moving parts (carbon brushes as used in an electric motor would work)
but you're gonna need about 9 for the VR set, and another 12 for the Controllers (27 if you want to futureproof your rig to USB 3)

Personally, I think a motion control plateau would be a better and less complicated idea, but this 4DOF swing doesn't look too bad

I have seen less of a construction doing 360, and very much less doing what this do. This costruction is done because it was the easy solution. The man
made it with what he knew how to do. And I totally respect that.
For everyone want to make a Pit , knows that it do not come cheap, the small prices on some components trick you into a project making you sell your grandma. A 360 device is expencive because of many things, among them the bearings and electrical swivel needed.
I do not think people really understand how it is to have a 360 availeable at all hours, I think it would be less used than expected. Even strapped in a 5 point harness you will be exhausted pretty quick.
I was working a bit to get such a simulator since it was selled for cheap a while back. about 10 000$. I deared not at the time, since well flight simulators is not that popular

    Re: Sim chair!

That rollercoaster sim is awesome. He went the right way with it as scaling is easy (with money ha) once the concept is nailed down. My desk is beginning to look like his though...haha. I love how all of the examples have functioning prototypes, but houses that are falling apart.

I finally figured out stepper motor control this weekend after leaving the project on the shelf for six months. I'll be putting together a Spitty elevator trim gauge that will be tied in directly to my elevator trim wheel.
It's dirt cheap nowadays to develop stuff. A set of five steppers + drivers cost me $14! With a $7 arduino and a 5V power supply from the thrift store, I'll be all set for running 5 slow gauges on a panel. 3D printer steppers are quite torquey and fast for $14. Big ones for $30-50.

xsimulator.net is a great resource for sizing equipment (hopefully they'll update Blitz support soon)...but boy that hardware looks mighty expensive. Weight and cost can be managed if you build with aluminum skins and have the tools.

I think I'll be moving more towards VR instead of motion stuff though. If I ever get my spit simpit done, I'll eventually want FFB bridles hooked up to the flight control cables (I can tap the FFB off my microsoft FFBII for airspeed, since for some reason everyone still supports it).

It's a big investment though, given that anything you get working will immediately become obsolete with an update or lack of support. It's a tinkerers paradise.
