    The mystery of idle...

    Hi All,
I don’t understand why the Tiger Moth’s engine is not running correctly at low rpm (it's OK from 1000rpm) when I start it up manually? It’s not a matter of warmup as it still not running smoothly after an hour of flight… Strangely when I play a « start in the air » mission the engine runs perfectly once on the ground. What could be wrong in my startup sequence ?

Perhaps your name would be a good place to start.

Seriously though, make sure you aren't changing your mixture on accident.

It is a bit of a weird one the Moth. Can barely hear the engine at startup. Almost like its not running at all.

Its one of my favourite planes though. huge fun !

For sure but... I did my introduction blabla few times ago. You can read it there :https://theairtacticalassaultgroup.c...ad.php?t=27966.
Did I miss some other protocole stuff?
    And...no I don't change the mixture.

    full rich. (100%)

it will be set at that when you jump in, so unless you change it it should be fine.

throttle settings at start / through warming are pretty critical...

of the top of my head 11% throttle is probably good for a bit.

I find that after a while (say i dunno.. 20-30 seconds) pumping the throttle kinda helps get it all settled and ready for takeoff.

    Re: The mystery of idle...

Yes OK that’s more or less what I do. The engine starts without problem but it does not run properly at low RPM (below 1000 rpm). Of course it’s not a problem for taxiing, take-off and flight but this sort of backfire effect remains whatever the warmup time spent. It’s weird, especially because this do not happened when you’re on ground after a mission started in the air...

    ahh ok im with you.

Ive only flown them from ground start.

If i understand correctly you mean yuo take off... fly about... and if you go to zero throttle you get a backfire and smoke out of the back of the plane?

That backfire / smoke out of the exhaust is correct.

No idea about air spawns, i dont think I've ever air spawned a Moth. But it should behave the same. Add a log to the bugtracker ! (see top of main ATAG homepage)
