    The Captain

The trailer suggest a typical "Hollywood B movie plot" about "blood evil nazis".

But is the case that real life imitate "Hollywood B movie plot".

    Re: The Captain

In this case it appears the 'Captain' acted on his own and murdered some Allied prisoners.

But the German SS and Politzei were "legally" engaged in almost exactly the same wholesale murder against their fellow German soldiers and civilians in this time period.

Hitler and Himmler had ordered the immediate and summary execution of anyone who showed 'Cowardice' (which included any retreat not authorized personally by Adolf Hitler or the General Staff) and any civilian displaying a white flag.

Any and all detachments of the SS or Politzei were given the authority of a 'Flying Courts Marshal', i.e. the status of a legally constituted court, so they could act instantly as Judge/Executioner in any situation deemed fitting.

Many thousands of German Armed force members were summarily shot or hanged for doing something as simple as moving back a few km to a better defensive position. (the estimate is a minimum of 15,000... and that does not include late 1945, when the majority of the executions happened... records were not kept) And large numbers of civilians were shot for displaying white flags from their residences on the approach of the Allied or Soviet. (which they would do to avoid being shelled or bombed)

    Article in German from Spiegel:

    http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/print/d-13526309.html

In the last days of the war, Hitler's attitude towards the German people was contemptuous to the extreme... he said the best of Germany were dead, and the rest were not fit to live. He ordered all industries and food stores to be destroyed and areas to be flooded... which would have caused a huge loss of life for inhabitants of Germany. Fortunately Speer and others managed to delay or refused to accept the orders and most of these actions were not carried out.

A good description of the end of the war can be found in Gunter Grass's autobiography... an excerpt is here. He was conscripted into the SS late in the war and experienced all the chaos of Nazi Germany's destruction:

The same type of actions also occurred in the Soviet Union during the period of the retreats in 1941-42 at the order of Stalin.

    Re: The Captain

If I read correctly the prisoners that this sick lunatic killed were german not allied. In these camps german "deserters" (Fahnenflüchtige) and "agitators" (wegen Wehrkraftzersetzung) were locked up.

Stalin gave the executive order Nr. 270 to liquidate deserters and deport their families in 1941.

    Sad times.

Order Nr. 227 was his first display of this type of ignorance...

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_No._227

Typical of the type of stupidity and ignorance people like Stalin and Hitler manifest.

Ordering 'no retreat' made their commander's jobs much more difficult and led to many disastrous defeats.

If Hitler had allowed his generals to withdraw to a shorter, and more defensible line in the Soviet Union, as they wanted to do in 1942/43/44/45, the chances of holding the front would have been much greater.

Instead he insisted on holding every sq/km and the result was an overstretched front with breakthroughs and surrounded pockets of Germans being inevitable.

Same applied to Stalin and his order... the greatest 'Kessel' of the war, in fact the greatest encirclement of any war happened in September of 1941 when the Soviet Southwestern Front centered on Kiev was ordered to hold in place as German pincers surrounded it from the North, West and South.

The result, to quote Wiki: "...was the encirclement of 452,700 soldiers, 2,642 guns and mortars and 64 tanks, of which scarcely 15,000 escaped from the encirclement by 2 October. The Southwestern Front suffered 700,544 casualties, including 616,304 killed, captured or missing during the battle."

Yes, I understand... I was making the point 270 wasn't the first time he ordered no retreat.

If some of the present day idiots who think Hitler and Stalin were some kind of geniuses actually read history and understood what cretins these two were they'd soon dump them.

Yet there are still thousands of brainwashed morons who cheer and wave their arms about when their names are mentioned.

Not that it matters, but I actually think it was the first. They are not in chronilogical order.

You are right... just noticed the date... odd that 227 is a lower number???

Anyway, we are in agreement... Stalin was a military incompetent as well as being a criminal sociopath and his actions damaged his country severely.

Yes and Mao can be added straight to that list! But the truly alarming part is, in a few decades history will more than likely repeat, as it always does...
