    Favourite Modules

    Hello.

Been mulling over the dcs modules. I have a couole of 50% off codes i picked up at Duxford.

Not sure what to go for.

I kinda fancy a helicopter. Anyhoo...

Figured I'd ask those of you who have stuff what you think is the best (your personal favourite) stuff is.... be that aircraft... map.. asset pack .. and why.

Maybe it will help me make some decision.

So come on.... out with it!

What is your favourite and why?

    - ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO - i9-13900k - ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 4090 OC - 32GB Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR5 5600MHz -

    Re: Favourite Modules

Really depends on your own personal preference or perhaps link to a specific module.

The Normandy / WW2 stuff is really in limbo.
Nevada theres quite a few campaigns and stuff but not everyones cup of tea. I like it though.

Just on the basic platform the Caucasus map is all you need then decide on some modules.

The Persian Gulf is going to be very popular I think, its a stunning map, but early days.

    Modules:
I have most of them just because I can't help myself.
The A-10C, that will keep you busy 'forever' lol. Stunning module modelled to the nth degree, still my favourite and wonderful for online and co-op missions.
Never been much of a dog fighter in DCS and prefer gound pounding / CAS roles. Everyone has their own preference though.

As for the fling wings, first the Huey, pure seat of your pants flying, the Mi-8 is also great but the Huey is a joy to learn to fly. Takes lots of practice.

Another nice jet to cruise around in is the L-39. Pretty easy systems and flies like a dream.

All depends on you though and what ticks your preference boxes.

    Re: Favourite Modules

My favourite at the moment has to be the Harrier, most of the systems are working, great fun to fly at night with NVG's, which you can now adjust the brightness of, great array of munitions for ground pounding, but she is no dogfighter, the only other module I fly is the F15 now and again and of course the Spit, which is a delight to fly and it's got cannons, as for the WW2 stuff it's creeping along at a slow rate and the WW2 servers are a little more busier, as for Helo's aint got one, but if I was gonna get one it would probably be the Gazelle..

    Re: Favourite Modules

DCS Huey is my favorite pick. It's very realistic to the real fling-wing and is Bell licensed. Comes with a steep, rewarding learning curve.

The mission editor is nice too. You can pick up/drop troops and cargo while dodging tracers and density altitude. Wish I had a little more time to mess with it.

    Re: Favourite Modules

    In order of preference

    A10C

    A10C

    A10C

    A10C

    A10C

    A10........................C

Its probably the most "involved" systems jet currenlty (the AV8B and F18 are not yet fully integrated and i doubt the F14 will be either) and has more quality training and campagin DLC than most modules. The Training DLCs are well worth their $10 price tags. A new "newbie" camapaign was being worked on by a respected commiunity member but this has gone dark recently.

There's plenty of enjoyment to be had with the A10C and just the free map so you can save yourself the disappointment and cost of the Las Closedas Nevada map and the performance sucking "accurate my arse" Normandy Map.

Best of all - there's so many systems to use and master on the A10C that when one gets broken by a new patch (and it will) there's another to re-learn and finesse meaning you can play the DCS beta casino with some modicum of confidence and enjoy the good whilst usually being able to skip any of the bad without waiting for the "stable" version.

If you are tmepted by the Warbirds all i can say is that DLC does jets really well!!

To be honest, you HAVE to get FC3 (Flaming Cliffs 3) with one of those codes purely because it gives you a s*&t load of planes to fly and have fun with and personally I like the Black Shark series BS2 is great fun.

man... is it me or is setting up cpontrols in DCS a massive pain in the bum?

Its eems to have set defaults across all peripherals... so my pitch etc is set on ALL peripherals...

and i cant see any trim controls on the huey at all.

I kept getting Normandy map freezes until I dropped the video settings way down. Unfortunately, the overall “look” is compromised, to me at least. It’s a sim I want to love but I’m afraid I’ll have to put a lot of time into it to get it right.

By contrast BoX has worked - and looked - great right from the start - all three modules. But, my first love (my bias is showing here) is Blitz. Today online Supermarine and I took on an AI formation of 111’s, then chased away a 109 that didn’t know we were both winchester. I got turned around and took a roundabout route back to Hamble airfield, but I didn’t mind...I was sightseeing.

IMO is not more difficult set DCS controls than another flight game. And their controls have some plus, like set any joy button as momentary "modifier" for others buttons, and "switches" a permanent (on/off) modifier, only lack the possibility to assign the same button for more than one command - what in Bo'X is possible up to three and reveal very useful.

What confuse is an attempt of implement an "auto-assignment" in the game, but result "bugged" and set the main controls - aileron, elevator, rudder, throttle for every game controller (joystick, throttle, pedal, etc) and so more hinder than help.

So you plug a rudder pedal and may start control aileron, throttle...

But is just matter that in controls select the controller, (eg. rudder pedals) and hit the button "Clear category", then assign the proper commands (rudder, brakes) for their axes.

Axes commands have a exclusive tab for assignment, what make things more easy.

Another "issue" is that are not a consistence in commands functions/names between different planes/makers, each maker name commands in their way, resulting confuse for some players.

    Re: Favourite Modules

Good choice mate! Someday we'll have to fly a multiplayer mission.

There's no trim on the Huey, but there's a button to center the trim. Each aircraft has its own controls menu. On the dropdown, click UH-1H Sim and scroll to "Pilot Trimmer".
Once getting forward speed, one can drop the collective and it'll lighten the stick forces too (and your temps).
Collective axis should be an S curve in axis-tune settings (mine's set to 29). My Stick axes are butterknife dull as well (25).

I keep the exhaust temp in the green and do the following to deal with vortex ring state:

    40+ IAS: Zone of happiness
30 IAS: Collective death grip and eyes on vertical speed (no seat of pants feature yet).
20 IAS: No more than 500 fpm descent rate and you're good. Temps go up if the collective turns into a hand-pump. lol

If you can fly the sim the real thing will be easier-ish. Now we just need to find a cheap Huey to fly.

Make in the controls settings you have stripped out any duplicates that populate by default.

    Hehe...

I haven't given it any great thought yet. Not sure how to deal with the twist part yet...

I will make one though. And it will become my spitfire radiator control as well.

    Re: Favourite Modules

Ihave been reflecting during the cold light of lunchtime on last nights shenanegans.

Normandy map aside (which for me on my power rig is basically a stutter fest) and the annoying default of binding controlls simultaneously to all peripherals....

Smashed up a good 14 Hueys last night..... and im hungry for more.

Wont be playing flight of the valkerie any time soon.... but take off is fine. Gotta practice my low level hover.... its strikingly similar to the time i did it for real (not in a huey). Despite that being 15 years back.....

Recon I need about 5 or 20 hours of hover practice.... and then start considering the other million switches ans what not.

Not impressed with the Normandy map at all as it currently stands. But the Huey..... oh yeah....

That's my helicopter sim sorted! DCS.

I've even been practicing how to talk like a "Sky G.I." too

The huey has been one of my favorites so far as well, simple to get in to but plenty going on to keep you engaged. Just be aware that most of the missions have parameters that were never adjusted after they added new EGT mechanics so they are way harder than they should be (or impossible) you will burn up engines like crazy. The argo campaign for the huey is in the process of updating everything so that it works smoothly ( I believe changes were sent in to DCS people and it is awaiting a patch) so it should be much more playable here soon.

    Re: Favourite Modules

With some judicious and careful settings you can get Nowherdy to run pretty well and look pretty good (for DCS). Higher shadow settings can be glitchy and "odd".

For whatever reason this map (and only this map) in the whole world of simmy simnessness (its a word and im a stable genius- why would you think so?...Sorry I just looked at the video and I misworded a double negative that wasn't actually a double negative, it should have been obvious but to clarify..why would not you think so... ) actually needed the power profile in the NCP to be set at "prefer maximum power" for me- without this it was stutter fest. With it its fine with most stuff on high and MSAA X2 even over Caen.

May I also recommend a little Target scripts called "Gizzys Profile" - I believe you in the TM Wartyhogg throttle brigade. This script allows DCS to see all your switch states (as it both positions of the switch) which can be useful in the set up.

Also have a looksee at some of the user made custom cockpits and dials as these can help clear up things (green is good - Red is bad etc).

Enjoy the landings!! - The only thing I can akin it to is being a passenger in a car crash

for the Huey if you use a split throttle, I set my left to engine rpm and right for collective.

Glad you are enjoying the Huey bud, it really is a great DCS module.
I'm Shrek green with envy though as I never got to fly a real flingwing, probably a good thing or I wouldn't be typing here now What did you fly, CPL?

Some decent default missions to get you up to speed with the 'feel' of the module, the oil rig landing being one.
My fav learning was the free flight mission from Tibilisi-Lochini, taking off, then putting it down on the ATC tower. Quick nasty, lots of wreckage, but you learn quickly.

For fear of hijacking my own thread

anyone know if an electric bike / mobility scooter twist throttle... the kind based on hall effect sensors, works with arduino leonardo boards?

    Hey... Zeb.... Lokos... Marco !!

I'm guessing they will.... spring removed...

    if so... thats £600 saved.

Lol. Well at least you had a bash at it. Good for you.
Maybe a Robinson R22 or 44 if you were doing a course of sorts. ppl(h)

I'll try rockup for training not wearing short pants and flipflops with a beer in hand so they at least let me in the door for the course when I go.

As for non cable bike throttles, plenty, just search for 'fly by wire' throttles. But you will be expected to pay handsomely for these parts, as they reside on some premium bikes.
