    Damage modelling graphics

While flying online i dont usually get the chance to check out the damage effects. Was practising shooting at Blennys offline just now and afterwards I was marvelling at the attention to detail in the graphic damage modelling.

In this case it appears that one of my 20mm rounds made it all the way thru the wing from aft to front and then detonated in the leading edge causing a big exit wound. And 2 sections of the skins in the large hole in the wing were flapping in the breeze as the blenny flew along - looked great.

    Good to see sometimes.

For the cannon round damage you see the same sorts of damage all the time, there are a limited number of locations that the big holes will appear. For instance that Blenny damage doesn't necessarily mean that the rounds travelled exactly from the trailing edge and detonated at the leading edge, and 2 more rounds made those big holes on the top. However CloD just shows the cannon damage as close as it can to where it should be. (The damage as far as I know is still calculated exactly as it should be, just there are a limited amount of visual options for the more detailed cannon holes.) When one flies red and gets hit by cannon often one gets to recognise the various types of cannon damage visuals. One of my favourites is when you look down at your wing in the Spitty and you can see your landing gear and your machine guns!

Individual small caliber bullet holes will however be placed exactly where they hit - now that is cool.

Thanks Flare - learn something new everyday so thanks for clarifying. Feel a bit like a kid who learns that the magician doesnt cut the lady in half. Nevermind still looks cool.

It would be neat if TFS could revise the cannon rounds to be where they hit as well. I always thought that was a bit cheesy. Some different damage annimations would be cool as well. I know they have much more important things on their plate ATM.

    Re: Damage modelling graphics

Don't get me wrong - there still is variation in the damage. And having the small bullet holes show up exactly where they should is impressive enough. All the modern sims use tech like this where they just show appropriate damage effects in approximately the right area. It's just too much dev work to model a 3D cannon round impact with the metal tearing and bending for every possible impact location. Small holes can just be decals but the big holes are more approximate. However CloD is the only sim I know of that puts the small bullet holes in exactly the right place.

Not trying to criticise the CloD visual DM for bullet/cannon holes. It does a great job. Just wanted to clarify that the cannon ones are not 100% based on the exact location of the shots.

Yeah I remember reading that in the Dev reports clear back in the banana forums. Haha. One can always dream and hope.. that's what I do with alot in this sim. I could see the potential and amazed at it's depth and complexity even way back then.
