    Ready to upgrade My GTX770 4GB.

    I'm on a budget and the price of NVidia cards have been insane so I've stuck with my old GTX770 4gb since 2014. I can run CLOD online, full details @ 1080 with very good performance but it's time to upgrade. I've been looking to buy used on the Bay but I'm a fan of EVGA cards and their B stock cards with a year warranty have caught my eye. I was sold on a GTX 980 ti SC+, 6gb but for the same price ($299) there is the GTX 1070 8gb. I realize they are probably pretty equal in performance but with DX 12 would the 1070 be a better choice? I only fly CLOD but might want to check out DCS and BOS as well. Thanks in advance.

    Re: Ready to upgrade My GTX770 4GB.

    Hi Axe,

    Guru3d have just published their annual buyers' guide. They discuss options for different budgets and conclude a 1070 might be best in your situation? https://www.guru3d.com/articles_page...ll_2018,4.html

    GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070, or Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB, or AMD RX580 8GB

    So, you all knew this was coming, and I stand very firm by my stance. The 1070 is, now, whether one likes it or, bang in the middle of Nvidia's Pascal lineup. Don't believe me? Well, it goes: GT 1030, GTX 1050, GTX 1050Ti, 1060 3GB, 1060 6GB, 1070, 1070Ti, 1080, 1080Ti, Titan X(p). Ok, so maybe not exactly in the middle, but I think my point is well made. The 1070 can, in certain parts of the world, be had for around the 350 USD mark, at the bottom end. For this money, you are getting the performance of the former Maxwell king, the 980Ti, for around 1/2 the price, a lot less power draw, and support for newer techs. All in all, it probably represents the best value for money (in terms of pure performance per dollar spent) GPU that Nvidia has launched since Maxwell arrived in 2014.

    Naturally, you will want to just aim for the cheapest 1070 you can find. Blower style GPUs (e.g. Nvidia founders, or other single fan 'entry level' models from the board partners) are prone to running hotter and lower clocked than their open face counterparts, but ultimately they are fine for most of us. If you can, of course, get your hands on an open face or more traditional dual fan GPU, then go for it.

    I did also think of this cautionary post about Ebay card purchases;

    That's an interesting warning about Chinese knock-offs. Note, it is no more relevant to sales on eBay than sales anywhere else like Craig's list, etc. eBay will deal with the frauds as soon as they are reported. My personal response to this threat is to avoid all sales from PRC. (but not from Taiwan!)

    I have experience buying USED items, including a GTX 980ti card from USA sellers and have had no problems. eBay even has a substantial customer protection program for purchases at no extra charge. The problems seem to crop up with sales of New items from non-domestic sellers and I think eBay is a good place to shop if you do your homework first.

    I upgraded two MSI GTX980 ti's (SLI) to a single MSI GTX1080 ti and saw a noticeable increase in performance.

    In my opinion, eBay is quickly going to become a great place to shop for USED GPU Card values now that the GTX 2080 ti has been released. Keep your eyes open for great deals on GTX1080ti's as the high rollers upgrade. This card is just dazzling for CLoD!

    GTX2XXX would be nice and future proof. But not many games/developers releasing game that utilizing Nvidia's new RTX.
    Also just keep in mind that FreeSync is more reasonably price than G-Sync monitor. $300-$800 for a GPU and additional $400-$500 GSync monitor.

    Looks like the $299 1070 isn't listed in the B Stock products today as it was yesterday. Guess I'll have to keep an eye on their site. the 1070 ti is $349 but really don't want to go over $300. Oh well.

    Re: Ready to upgrade My GTX770 4GB.

    Several 1070's on the Bay around the $200 mark. Might take a chance. I also found out that the old 3DFX Voodoo's are bringing some dollars. I have two Voodoo 5 5500's, one I purchased new back in the day with the box and a matched pair of Voodoo 2 12mb cards I ran SLI in my very first rig. They are in the boxes with manuals and install disc. I flew the hell out of EAW with the 78th VFG on that Voodoo 5. I'll have to put together my old 98se rig to test them. They all worked when I upgraded and put them away. Perhaps I can gin some funds for my upgrade.
