Hi Squidly.......this 'going online' business is a strange thing. I never had any intention of going multiplayer when I first bought Cliffs.......what, get in amongst all those strange people you hear about, just waiting to pounce on you as soon as you go on line? No fear! So I played single player for a whole year. Eventually, I got a little bored of shooting down AI aircraft that just sat there while you fired at them. By this time, I had seen some fascinating you tube videos, where pilots seemed to be working together on line in some way that I didn't totally understand. The videos they posted seemed so realistic that gradually my curiosity was piqued. This seemed to be exactly what some boyhood dream of mine was looking for.

So eventually, I spawned in at Lympne on the ATAG Axis and Allies server....just to see what would happen. I spawned out again as soon as it said 'Please read the Mission briefing for Instructions' because I thought: 'God! They already know I'm here and they realise I haven't got a clue!' Big Brother or what? But eventually, I spawned in long enough to warm up a Spitfire and take off, flying east towards Dover. As I crossed Dover I happened to look behind (I didn't yet have Track Ir so looking behind was a difficult and slow process) and to my horror saw an evil looking yellow spinner flashing in the light, right behind my tail. Before I could do anything the unknown Blue pilot fired and I was hit badly. Losing control, I had no choice but to bail out. Fortunately, all my months of practice paid off and I landed in Dover harbour, shocked but alive and with my heart thumping excitedly. That was bloody awesome!

Immediately, the possibilities opened up. This is a 'full real' scenario! This IS The Battle of Britain as I imagined it! If he could do that to me then I could do that to him too....with a bit of practice. (A lot of practice!!!) I can learn to fly and fight just as those brave lads did back in Summer, 1940. And I've never looked back.

But one thing was a TOTAL surprise...and that was the cameraderie, support, advice and real friendship that I have found amongst our online Community, accessed, of course, through Team Speak. They are all a great bunch of people who, though they 'fly computers,' are as 'normal' as you and I. We may be separated by oceans and thousands of miles but we all share a love and fascination with history and The Battle of Britain in particular.

This Community has members spread across the world. So, we are a world force for good.......and I'm sure we provide companionship and the sharing of a common interest with people who maybe can't get out as much as they would like, or who live in isolated parts of the world. That's a huge plus...and a hidden 'strength of 'this flight sim 'Cliffs of Dover!'

Huh! And some people think this is 'just a game!' How wrong can you be! Good luck....and I hope to see you in our virtual skies soon. (For some formation flying perhaps?). Salute!
I so enjoyed reading this post an could so relate.

I totally concur! TS is the fastest way to learn.
My huge problem is the lack of time to stick online. But still go there when there's a minute or two in my month.

This Sim has the Best community ever!

    Straighten up and fly right.

Glad that you found a solution

For the Macchi, it is basically a G50 with a Bf109 engine... If you can fly both, you should be alright in it.
I also can hardly wait until it is released...

LOL, what the G50 is missing is speed and power. Hopefully this will be taken care of by the DB601 and you guys will no longer be able to brag about shooting fish in a barrel...

    Who does?
Right now and with the coming patch blue definitely has the superior planes.
This seems to be historically accurate until about at least ca. 1943 as far as I see.
Later on, some of the best designs like the G. 55 were not build in relevant numbers.

With the US entering the war, the allies had a growing numerical advantage, which made the difference. First of equipment and then especially of well-trained pilots.
Even when the Me 262 was theoretically available, pilots had to take of in 110s to attack the bomber formations plus escort.
This will not be reflected in any sim (just as the reliability of aircraft does not play a role, the ergonmics of aircraft can only partly be modelled, and the quality of petrol and repair-facilities is not play a role at all).

I'm glad this is just a game ...

(but an absolutely brilliant one )

I hope TFS in creating "Tobruk" will address some existing issues with CLOD, such as making it easier to spot at higher resolutions, narrowing the performance gap between comparable aircraft. if it is CLOD (brilliant as CLOD is) with a new map and a few new aircraft I fear for its success in the long term.

    Re: Spotting in multiplayer

Aircraft performances should be modelled as close to available historical data as possible and not be subject to balancing in order to artificially close gaps between different aircraft.
The balancing should happen on the server maps where mission builders have the choice of limiting or blocking access to aircraft that enjoy a significant advantage over their opposition.

I think most ATAG maps right now would benefit from blocking both the 109E-4/Ns and Spit IIa models. When both of these are available we tend to only see those and few to nothing else. Same will apply to 5.0 and its top tier fighters (109F-4 Late, Spit V 16lbs) I suppose.

    Re: Spotting in multiplayer

The air modelling will always strive to be as accurate as possible within the limitations of the software; this is a major feature of IL2 Sturmovik Cliffs of Dover...Blitz and beyond. I don’t speak for TFS, but this is certainly the policy since Day One.

I agree with Karaya that the mapmakers can greatly influence the level of gameplay by blocking or limiting the number of specific aircraft models available. Another tact is to have advanced models located at distant inland airfields, so squads can still fly their preferred aircraft but accept that it will take longer to reach the combat and/or target areas. The recently re-introduced & improved rearm/refuel will be a major advantage in this case vs respawning at the distant sites - as long as you keep your sustained damage light!

Personally, I enjoy 109 E4 vs Spitfire 1a 100 octane duels. Both are evenly matched, IMHO, with each needing to have their respective strengths and vulnerabilities optimized/minimized for one opponent to prevail over the other.

On the ATAG maps we have - generally - had many of the models available for both sides in unlimited fashion since players like to fly their favourite mounts. But Jack does present a valid case that there is always room to continually assess the dynamics of each map and make tweaks within the parameters above.

    Good input, gentlemen.

As far as it concerns the Blue side, dogs in the cockpit are permitted...the only mandatory parameter requestes by OKL about them is that they must be named " Blondie "!

    Re: Spotting in multiplayer

The use of TeamSpeak for online gaming can in no way be overstated. It is the easiest and quickest way for knowledge from vets to new pilots to be transferred. Something explained on TS by a fellow flier in 30 seconds can take days or weeks of trolling and reading on your own so never under estimate the amount of info you will acquire using this free accessory. There will also inevitably be things that you are doing wrong that you were totally unaware of until someone points them out to you on TS and when that happens it feels like a revelation. mx player app download

Most vets do not mind answering questions or even tutoring new enthusiastic players on flight sims so do not be shy to try it and ask questions. Even just listening will give you more relevant information to enhance your game play.

    Re: Spotting in multiplayer

I don't know if it's something related to the spotting capabilities in multiplayer but in my virtal pilot career I've noted this:

    - 18 to 40 years old: I was playing on a very small monitor capable of seeing every contact. No chance that I missed something!

    - 40 to today: I'm using a very big 4K TV and a 4K monitor. Most of the times I can barely see contacts and very often I'm took by surprise by the opponent. Last but not least I need to stay very close to the screen to be able to see something.

    - Next 10-20 years ( My expetations ): My guess is that within the next 10-20 years I will have to rent or buy a cinema screen to be able to see something when playing online if my " spotting capabilities " will proceed at the current rate!

    - Very long term expetations: May the force be with you!

I play on a large 4k monitor as well, anti aliasing being off seemed to help with spotting contacts while keeping the 4k res.

Don't take your eyes off the bad guy in a fight in the first place. Anticipate where he's going and keep looking, he's there. Of course the longer it takes the more likely that he isn't there anymore and you have to expand the search area.
