    Realistic controls

Eyup everybody - in the new year I'm going to be making some sets of realistic flight controls for WW-2 aircraft. It's an idea I've had for about 5 years and got partially into until life intervened a while back.

First will be throttle quadrants, with rad and trim controls. They'll be focused on realism rather than a multitude of buttons and hats, but I'm not going down the route of making them aircraft specific. Probably a German and an English style, given the difference between the philosophy of operation between the national manufacturers.

I don't have anything to show yet, apart from a couple of photos that survive from two earlier projects. One you'll recognise, the other is a gear lever for a 60's BRM Formula One car, that was intended for sim racing use.

What I'm hoping to get is feedback from you guys on what you'd like in terms of blobs and gadgets on a throttle quadrant, and the general design. In the fullness of time, beta testers too

    Re: Realistic controls

I think for generic-ness, I like the P47 for a smaller quadrant. I like the B24's, which is what I patterned mine after. I also added actuated reverse lever stops. Useful also for Cliff's 10% setting.
I'm looking at slightly reducing the button count, but rotary encoders have been really nice for compass, gyro, and the mk1 bombsight on the Blenny. A big trim wheel on the side is nice.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.20171216_203915.jpg

Zeb, be honest now. Were you standing on your head when you took that?

    Re: Realistic controls

I have sort of categorised the different style of aircraft controls like this...

British early war - things scattered at random throughout cockpit
BF-109 - just as bad, some stuff missing entirely
British mid to late war - reasonable organisation, mostly
Luftwaffe mid to late war - ruthless teutonic efficiency
US in all periods - logical and neat. Includes ashtrays and soda fountains

That's satire of course, but there's a lot of truth in it I reckon

I want to keep each countries philosophy and 'look' without putting the end user through silliness just for the sake of it...
