    IR Tracking cause motion sickness?

Hey guys; I was about to order a delanclip and then I stumbled upon a guy who said he kept getting motion sick from using IR, does anyone else? I get motion sick very easily, even in a rocking chair I will get sick and playing FPS will make me sick after about 30 minutes. Now I am concerned if it would bother me and am hesitating.

Re: IR Tracking cause motion sickness?

I found when I started out with headtracking I felt a bit queasy once and had to lie down, but I attribute that to me being over-excited at the ease and fluidity of using it for the first time and jerking my head round with no regard for my poor sense of balance. Never had an issue after that.

If you are concerned about it then you could try an easy alternative like FaceTrackNOIR or the Aruco headtracker, which may not give the best quality of position but will give you an idea of what it's like without having to commit ordering equipment. I recommend keeping your head as straight as possible while starting out, and then get used to slow tracking movement while on the ground, before progressing to the virtual skies in non-combat and then eventually to combat.

    Also, welcome to the forums!

It can upset a small minority for 2-3 days while your brain and eyes orientate themselves and then your good. It’s not as bad as you have heard. After a couple of days you wont notice anything at all and you will never go back to not using it.

Re: IR Tracking cause motion sickness?

You will probably (as I did) realise how much you bop around when you are flying especially in the midst of a dogfight...Then you'll figure out that you have to consciously and purposefully move your head while you fly...That takes a bit of getting use to...I soon realised that I move around way too much when I am in the heat of battle or trying to line up a target...and that is something that doesn't help when you fly with a head tracker...

As for the motion sickness...Don't forget that you already have been dealing with some of that, just the fact you are flying and while the whole picture in front of you is moving...So you are already experiencing some that and if it hasn't been an issue up to now there is no reason to not try a head tracker...

It is something that you have to get use to...I wouldn't play around with the profiles but instead download one or two from the many helpful folks you find in this forum...You may find that you can tweak them at a later date but remember to save the profile someone gives you and copy and past it for one you can tweak...Sometimes the tweaks you do go the wrong way and mess with other axis and you end up with a worse case than before so is always important to always keep a back up file of the profile someone has given you...

Also there are cheaper alternatives to the Delan clip...and you can even make one yourself if you have the know how...The PS3 Eye is the go to camera for most folks who have cheaper versions (trackIR is the main one that folks have but its way expensive and doesn't give much more to you than a home made version)

Here's a couple threads to check out on DIY trackers

    Headtracker profiles...

    https://theairtacticalassaultgroup.c...t=headtrackers

Also check youtube for 'DIY Headtracker'...Lots of info on how to's there...

Let us know how you get on...

Hi Chris.......I've been using Track Ir5 for about 3 years now. It works like a dream and has never given me a problem.....not since I 'borrowed' ATAG_Lewis' profile! (Thanks Lew!')

However, I did feel a bit weird and strange on first using it but it only lasted about 2 days then I 'adjusted.' As Kiwi says I really think some of this was down to just plain excitement on the possibilities it presented. If I go away from home for a week and then return, I have a tiny bit of the same 'strangeness' but it lasts no time at all. I know what it is and my brain quickly remembers and tells me to.... 'stop being a wuss and get on with it!'

It's a fantastic bit of kit........best bit of money I spent in years! (Though the wife probably disagrees!) Ha ha! Good luck!

By way of summary then :

    1. It's weird and strange.
    2. It lasts two days.
    3. You adjust.
    4. After a week away you have a tiny strangeness.
    5. The brain quickly remembers.
    6. Stop being a wuss and get on with it.
    7. Good luck.

    Yup that about covers it

You might have an inner ear problem. I have never felt sick from using Track IR, although I recently started using Trackhat Pro clip with a PS3 eye, which is smoother and has better null zones, and is easier to adjust to taste/game. It feels and looks more natural too.

I gave up on Track IR due to it's high price, flimsiness, and its erratic behaviour at times. It also frequently needed recalibrating. The track IR sensor has a processor which gets very hot. I don't see this as necessary when we are pushing 16GB RAM, i7 or i5 processors on our mobos and GPUs with gbs of GDDRAM.

My Track IR would flick about in a way that if real world, would give me a broken neck, and as that processor warms up, it got less sensitive.

The PS3 eye has no more than a CCD in it. And its a CCD with a much higher resolution, sensitivity and angle of view than the Track IR sensor. It so far has been very stable.

Tried using opentrack and aruca (?)today and sure enough it hit, right now my stomach feels queezy. I will keep playing with it a little at a time maybe I can overcome it. My only problem with the OT and A is looking left made me look down, and right made me look up.

Yes, my ears always bug me, been to the doctor numerous times...'looks fine to me'. It was brutal sitting in the back of an APC with the vehicle bouncing up and down and left and right, always glad to 'de-bus'.

I wasn't sure about the tracker hat or the delanclip, I kind of like the hat myself.

Slow down and don't rush if you are new to head tracking. Take time and familiar to head movement and adjust the curves in Opentrack. Focus on Yaw and Pitch for now. In the Accela filter options, drag all setting to the right and decrease it incrementally as you fine tuned your movement. I got dizzy when I first used my DIY headtracker device as well. So you not the only one.

If you referred full 6DOF. The PS3 (Playstation Eye Webcam) is a great alternative to TrackIR. With the right setting and an old floppy disk film media as a daylight filter, you shouldn't have any problem even bright sunlight on your six. It is a pain the remove the Infrared filter thought. It took me two hours to removed it, with the microscope aid. Someone did suggested the coating on Infrared filter can be sand off without the need to remove the lense/filter.

The Delanclip and the HAT mounting device is less prone to crack and less brittle. My old three point IR LED mounted on a medium grade steel wire and I've have accidentally dropped quite a few times without issue.

It took me about 2 days to get used to my TrackIR5.

Now, I consider it as important as my joystick.

Good luck getting use to your new eyes.

I definitly found keeping the reticle line up tricky to start with.

I had no idea how much my head was moving about until i started using Track IR.

Re: IR Tracking cause motion sickness?

After using my TrackIr for a few years I realised I much prefer it after adjusting the 'motion control' sliders. It reduced the overall sensitivity of the tracking.

These settings are relative to the given 'profile' of the user but these controls can provide more stability. Along those lines there's a TrackIr profile of 1:1 where the actual head motion relates exactly to that in game. Obviously not practical in play, but a start. I'm not sure if other devices have similar functions and adjustability.

I'd think a sense of nausea comes from the difference in physical movement and perceived movement to the eye, in the same way video lag on VR headsets caused it. Lessening that difference might help ?

I got along fine for years with the hat stick but I'd not go back given the choice. Into my 50's I'm not a gamer and have never played anything but WWII flight sims. It's the immersion for me.

I still have trouble keeping the recticle central even now.

I am forever hitting the 'Recentre' button during gameplay.

This wasn't a problem when using Ed Tracker though, but it's definately better having 6DoF

    Hi Drasmorg,
About your ear problems....never, repeat never take a General Practitioner's word "looks ok to me" for it.
Go and see a GOOD Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist. Might be a few $ but trust me, get an opinion from a Specialist who actually does know something about ears.
U may need an MRI scan or whatever they recommend but it may be as simple as a couple of weeks of steroids to calm things down (that's glucocorticoids not anabolic).

    S!~

Ive found that the very fast stock sensitivity in Track IR - when toned down - slower - has a much easier adjustment period. Its like your head and eyes getting less 'G''s so to speak.
Small movements - less sensitive- and of course 6 degrees of freedom should be rock solid. Whip over into an inverted dive- barrel roll hard- and keep your head and TrackIr focused in your gunsight or some outside airborn object. The queeziness goes away after about 75-100 of those. Np. You got this. GL
