    Galland Spotting

Galland and a Buchon? I'm guessing on the set of BOB in 1969.

    Re: Galland Spotting

I do recall hearing about him being hired as technical adviser for the Battle of Britain film. It was from a really fantastic book (please every WWII aviation enthusiast make sure you read) named "Higher Call" by Adam Makos.
BOB was actually not a bad movie, some good aerial footage, a batch of fantastic actors, and having Galland involved just makes it that little bit cooler haha xD

But he did do some interesting things post war. I think he was also hired as a flight combat instructor for a group of mercenaries in one of the civil wars in southern Europe/Africa.

    Re: Galland Spotting

The unfortunate thing about the BoB film was there was not quite the level of miniaturization in Film cameras at that period as there was just 10 years later.

So while the footage shot for the film is really incomparable in terms of the number of aircraft in the air, the PoV shots are limited because cameras could not be mounted in as many positions as they might have been later.

I still believe with the techniques available now for CGI, and combining those techniques with footage shot from real aircraft, it would be possible to make a film which surpasses the BoB.

Of course, equally important to the technical aspects is the the Director's vision... if you have a Director who wants a cheezy fake heroic film with aircraft doing things which are impossible, (like 'Pearl Harbour') then all the technical wizardry in the world won't save the project.

But if Peter Jackson put together a project, I am convinced it would excellent.

Not sure if these were spotted before, but here are 4 interesting photos of "pilot talk" involving Galland and Mölders.

First I thought they were comparing how tall their kids were.

Then I thought showing each other some new dance moves.

The last pic is obviously a discussion about the new fingers five formation.......

Without the silliness, thanks for sharing these, not seen them before.

    Re: Galland Spotting

Noofy those "Fotos" are priceless!! Thanks for sharing!

Aye, in regard to the realism involved in movie making, aside from noticing the peculiarities in the movie after re-watching, Dunkirk from last year actually had some dang good aerial scenes in terms of realism. Yes, they did use Yaks (I think) for the in-cockpit shots for the spitfires, and perhaps the aircraft were a little slow, and just recently noticed that one pilot increases his prop pitch to gain power for his climb, but noticed that the prop pitch control was the one fitted in the Hurricanes and not in the Spitfires!!! (How they managed to mess up realism aspect for wrong realism aspect, also with real Spits on the scene I have no idea. Perhaps the Spits were modified with the Hurri prop pitch IRL but anyway.
The flashing effects from Observer bullets on the HE111s were beautiful! And perhaps the most realistic bullet effects I have seen in a movie; pre-Battle of Britain, so no tracers but just that occasional hint of orange that you do actually see from a flaming bullet flying through the air. Plus the sound effects were pretty much spot on.

May not have been the most incredibly acurate movie, but I would pay to see a remake of BOB done in the style that Christopher Nolan did Dunkirk from the stand point of shooting in the air. Imagine BOB with IMAX cameras on the spits, I don't suppose they make blanks for 7.92 Brownings now do they?

Just bring a director from the 60s-70s out to modern day and get it done pls xD

Anyway, bit of a rant, but still, it would be amazing, just need the right director/team

Nice, came across one of those some years ago and posted it here. It turns out there is an interesting anecdote around the one. Looks like they all may be from the same event.

Major General Galland, Colonel Mölders, and Major Lützowplatz celebrating Osterkamp's birthday, 16 Apr 1941, Photographer Dreesen Source German Federal ...
    And from Wikipedia
On 15 April 1941, Galland took off with lobster and champagne to celebrate General Theo Osterkamp's birthday at Le Touquet, France. He made a detour with his wingman towards England, looking for RAF aircraft. Off the cliffs of Dover he spotted a group of Spitfires. Galland attacked and claimed two confirmed and one unconfirmed shot down. The actual result was the destruction of one Spitfire; the other two were damaged in force landings with both pilots wounded.[64] During the combat Galland's undercarriage had dropped causing one of the RAF pilots (Flight Lieutenant Paddy Finucane) to claim Galland's aircraft as destroyed, but Galland landed without incident at Le Touquet and presented Osterkamp with his gifts

    Yes you are right.
They are all from the same event.
They must have bored the other two with their aerial combat stories because they went out to finish their conversation on the balcony...

    Haha!
I could imagine that explanation being entirely plausible Noofy!
Pilots are very passionate about their job, especially fighter aces,
