TFS Developer Update 30 June, 2019 - Martlet and new sounds

Here is an expanded look at one of the new flyable aircraft for IL-2 Cliffs of Dover, the Martlet.

Also showcasing new sounds and the new theater, North Africa.

A more in depth look at the Martlet will be released in the near future.

The North Africa map is still in Alpha. It does not include the new cloud systems and weather, or other details such as rock formations or rocky abuttments, distance views, etc. etc. which will be seen in the final version.

You do know that you are training us to expect daily new videos from you, don't you? Keep up the pace!

As with the Spitfire video, great sounds! And what a beautiful Mediterranean!

    Thanks DUI,

I did mention yesterday, it's going to be a Big Week.

There may have been a subtle hint there

FYI, the spinning prop and spinning prop textures are placeholders from another aircraft, that is why it looks off. The work for the spinning prop and texture for the Martlet is finished, just needs to be imported.

You guys are going to have to give us two weeks notice before this thing comes out...You have to be that kind at least to the poor slobs who have to rely on Paypal. I can't imagine waiting 8-9 days for money to clear while other guys are putting up youtube videos raving about how much fun they're having flying over Libya in their new mounts...Watching the two videos that have come out today have really sent that message home to me... I would go nuts LOL

Might I also say that those new sound effects are simply smashing?

From starter and "no" RPM blade sounds to wholesome fly by engine sound effects. Things are starting to sound even bigger

Also are those new fire effects I see? They look pretty flamin awesome to me

Re: TFS Developer Update 30 June, 2019 - Martlet and new sounds

I made a comparison between TFS WiP and real audio. I like the approach sound but the 'passed' sound is really missing that gutteral thump as the aircraft carves through the air.
I put together a comparison. First one is TFS WiP, next is real audio flyby and then I overlaid the real audio on the TFS footage. I really hope TFS can add the 'passed' audio effects as it makes the Martlet sound very powerful?

Not sure if Slip can give you more info about the WiP sounds, but that real audio clip I believe shows an FM-2, which used the single-row R-1820 engine which does have more of a slapping/gurgling sound rather than the twin wasp that the Martlet uses.

As Spiritus says, the clip you are showing is from an FM-2 which is powered by the Wright Cyclone R-1820 9 cylinder engine, whereas our Martlet is powered by a Pratt and Whitney R-1830 14 cylinder engine. Both have similar displacement in Cubic Inches/CC's, but each sounds quite different.

The Pratt and Whitney has more, but smaller cylinders... so the firing impulses are quieter but closer together... which gives a smoother quality. The Cyclone has larger cylinders, but fewer in number so the firing impulses are louder but separated audibly more so... so it is more ragged and staccato. If you want a real life comparison, think of the differences between a old style American V8 and a BMW or Mercedes V12. (and the aircraft engine comparison would be more so)

It is always a good idea to check your sources and research carefully before posting.

There a reason why you post everything twice between here and the Il-2 forums?

Official updates I get, as the TF team can communicate to different online communities, but then you make them have to respond (with the same exact answer...cut and paste) in two different places.

I'm guessing it's because of the partnership due to the source code thing?

Interesting! I'm just curious to know, would these engines sound much different when mounted in an airframe? I'm not big on sound science, but I have an irrigation pump that sounds like a crisply tuned BMW if I stand on one side, and sounds like pure hell on the other. (personally I'm just happy it runs, but hey..)

Have you ever listened to the sound in exterior, while going around with the view?
Cliffs can make different sounds from different positions.
From the front the supercharger whistle is more pronounced.
