Popped back in the Hurricane Saddle today after about 6 yrs I think.

    Hello Chaps,

Popped back into the old Hurricane cockpit for a quick how-do-you-do to incoming Bosch Ju88's.

Bagged a couple and then headed for home with my flight.

Beautiful landing except found myself in France of all the bloody things.

Gotta see the training officer about setting compass and such again . . . .

I forgot how great the graphics were outside the aircraft. Landing as smooth as butter with no flaps. Couldn't find the handle chaps.

    Cherio for now,

    Catseye

Sounds familiar, i'd been flying the tiger moth for a little bit before I jumped into the first hurricane mission, i was having a total nightmare trying to catch up with those dornier's when it hit me as to why my flight was so slow and juddery...
    I'd left the gear down...

Haha, the two-stage landing gear of the Hurricane and the Blenheim gets me every time!

    Woah!
This is fantastic. I didn't know this was published.
Feels good being on Pathe News.

I haven't had this much fun in the last 5 years or so. We did good and always have done Snap. Especially those ultra low Boulogne valley flights stalking incoming.
I think that this was in the middle years because I became more versed with the ammo after joining Team Fusion and working on some of the damage model and ammo types. I remember finally getting the dewilde to work properly.

To answer your query all these years later - the .303 AP was pretty useless and abandoned by the RAF almost as soon as it was tried. Not enough kinetic energy in that calibre to penetrate much beyond the skin and then just tumbled around ineffectively.

The ball was quite effective compared to the AP.

The best was/is the.303 DeWilde as it essentially was ball ammo modified a bit with a coating of Pottassium Nitrate if I recall and it ignited on contact and travelled into the substructure white hot. It had a marvelous sparkle effect (not big explosions) that helped the pilot with his aiming and confirmed contact with surface areas.

Next was tracer except that unlike the DeWilde, it started burning when it left the barrel and lost a lot of thermal energy by the time it hit the target.

I even had a little giggle when I was examining the Hispano 20mm, which wasn't on the Spit or the Hurri then and in order to get a visual, I installed 4 of them on a Hurri and went hunting AI Ju88's and Heinkels over Holland/Belgium. Wings were torn off with the damage model then. It was an eye opener.

Once I get my gear programmed, I'll have to hope in a Spit. By the way, do you recall what version Spit we might have been flying? Seems management was easy.

Speak with you soon as I get sorted out.

    Cheers,
    Cats . . .

    Hi Cats,

    We were a deadly team.

We can be more deadly in Tobruk....Hispanos!

I would wager the Spits we were flying in the video were 1a 100 octanes. The key is to assign a handy axis for the radiator (I use the little grey lever on my Warthog throttle body - it has a handy 50% detent which really helps for eyes-off manipulation).

Interesting how we set up our TM Throttles. I use that grey lever for my prop pitch. The detent offers a good spot to set a default as to what you want. Mine is set to combat settings.
I use the pinky side three way switch - forward for Rad, Backwards for oil.

    Cheers
ps agree and the deadly duo thingy.
