Final 13 minutes of the Moon Landing: Spellbinding

If you want white knuckle tension, try listening to the final 13 minutes of the Apollo moon landing as Neil Armstrong, running out of fuel, with the computer overshooting the planned landing site and taking the lunar module into a boulder field which would have destroyed the craft and the crew, has to take manual control from the computer and find a good spot to put it down... which he does with about 15 seconds of fuel remaining. Throughout the whole thing he and Buzz Aldrin don't even break a sweat... they sound like they are out for a stroll.

    ....I'll second that!

Listened to it yesterday and it was amazing! Incredible what they achieved so long ago. I was 12 years old at the time. Thank goodness the teachers had the forethought to stick all of us in front of a very grainny black and white television, to watch that 'one small step for man... one giant leap for mankind!' Salute!

Gads, listening to that I was about to turn blue holding my breath in the final seconds!

I was 15 years old on vacation in Cape Cod with my parents and kid brother. We were renting a small cottage seaside and the owners kindly invited us to the main house to join their family in the living room to watch on TV. The excitement was HUGE, and we didn’t know at the time what a close-run thing the mission was. Incredible to think this was achieved before hand calculators were invented!

I highly recommend the new Apollo 11 video that just came out. I bought the blueray and was not disappointed.

They overlay telemetry (fuel qty, velocity, radar-alt, master cautions, heart rates, etc) during the landing sequence.

    Incredible memories.

I was 9 years old. We were all gathered in front of a rounded and grainy b/w tv for what was one of the first world-wide live broadcast programs. After the Eagle had landed, I remember going out in our garden, looked up at the moon, and thought: wow, what we’ve just seen on TV is actually happening there...

What also fascinates me is that nowadays each one of us carries in his pocket a device that has much more computing power than the machine that put Man on the moon, and yet all we do with it is stare all day long at Instagram, Facebook, and the likes...

    Gripping!

    Thanks for sharing this Buzz.

    Shared it with my kids.

I was 11 and we drove to my grandparents to watch it because they had a colour tv (doubt it looked much different than the black and white).

And like you Noofy, stepping outside and seeing the moon hanging up there and realizing that people were on the surface was, for me, mind boggling.

Seconded Zeb's recommendation to watch the new documentary. It's absolutely fantastic.

Also, fun fact: every single Apollo lunar landing was switched into manaul control for the final descent. Really shows that pilots have quite a desire to have direct control over their craft.

... or that you cannot trust a program written by someone who has not tried the thing before.

The "1202" computer error - run out of memory, caused by "human error".*

    * Buzz leave the radar needed for re-coupling on command module ON during descend, for what are not needed.

Can we get this guy to write TFS5.0 missions for us?

Didn't know Jason Bourne was involved.
