Hi all, here is a comparison of the map improvements completed since the last update earlier this month.
Map is remains a work in progress, as is the aircraft at the end.

Great to see the progress.
Not sure if I even interpret it correctly, but in DerDa's image there seems to be a row of bushes - maybe in some sort of ditch. Something like this is what I am missing on the current WIP map. Having grouped vegetation in addition seems to be more organic to me than only random single bushes.
I know this is just show casing but I think there are way too many clouds showing. I remember from my time in Egypt (I know, way east from the map area) hardly ever seeing clouds at all. When I saw even the tiniest little cloud, I took notice. Just saying...

From a purely aesthetic point of view I have to agree with Dui, but I've seen both types of landscape in Northern Africa (and some more in addition). If you check my dad's pictures I posted here, you find quite a variation as well.
It very much depends on the amount of sand that covers the ground as well as on the very variable yearly amount of rain.
As far as I know TFS was using Google Earth (amongst others) as a source.
The problem here is that it shows the present state, not what we had in the 1940s.
There was severe draught and a general reduction of annual rainfall since the mid 1960s in the Med

which must have changed quite a bit.

You would not expect much clouds in North Africa during summer. But anyway you can set up the cloud density in the mission editor, so how realistic it looks depends on the mission maker.

I don't think it will always be without cloud. This is a weather forecast I found today. It is from a 14 day forecast, and I picked a few days where there are clouds/rain etc. (It is for Tripoli by the way).

The northern part would get more rain, as it is by the sea.

I've been following all of these updates eagerly, and must say I am seriously impressed with the work and commitment the team is putting into this project.
I must say though that this update seems a step backwards to me graphically. In the before shots the clouds seem to blend a lot more organically with the sky and the scenery creating a much more homogenous picture. In the update the clouds just seem to 'pop' in an almost neon colour. For me the clouds have long been one of the main drawbacks of this sim. Whilst it's great how they are modelled up-close, they just look like floating cotton balls, and really detract from the photo-realism of the rest of the sim.
I am hoping that the environmental update that has been teased will address some of these issues. One of the main improvements I think needs to be made is in the modelling of the sky. To me the colours are very greyed out, and more vibrance would really improve the overall realism. I think this has been well modelled in both DCS and contemporary Il-2, where the colouring of the sky and the clouds is reflected well in the vibrance of the landscape colours whether shown in the sun or in shadow. If TF can nail the clouds and get them fading well into the distant landscape, I think this sim will be the most beautiful combat sim around.
Just my 2p.
Thanks. However, if you are thinking it is a step back only because of the clouds, ignore them. I read your post and it seems like the cloud issue was your only issue. No disagreement there, however the clouds are getting a work over. Everything else, ground textures, map work, etc are definite improvements.
we are always putting pressure
We are very demanding
but this is normal, seen and finished one thing, we want the progress of the following
This shouldn't be very nice working part time
I agree with the clouds ........... but I'm sure they will address the issue after doing a fantastic job with the map
I don't know what the weather would be like in Tobruk, but it's a pending issue for the canal map too ... condensation and the effects of rain like fog
Updates are appreciated, wishing for the P40 in motion as well as the macchi
The new update shows more colour contrast and brightness for the terrain and clouds. I see this as a clear improvement, but that is personal of course.
It's up to the Mission Builder as to whether there are clouds in the sky or not.
The game can be configured with zero clouds or many.
Mission Builders working with the Tobruk Map will obviously have to consider reducing the number of clouds in historically based missions.
Of course, during some seasons, there were clouds present in large numbers... see pic below from present day Libya coast... and weather has become dryer since WWII era.
