Nvivia Image Sharpening

Oops! Nvidia. Latest driver (441.08) has a new feature in the Nvidia Control Panel called "Image Sharpening". I have seen great improvement in my CLoD screen at 4K resolution with no cost in framerate. Distant target acquisition and distant buildings and roads are vastly improved.

Don't see it! Been through all the tabs and cannot find anything called image sharpening!

I just tried it, and I have to say you are right! Spotting targets is easier at 4K with it turned on, and close aircraft really stand out now. Also noticed a definite sharpness to ground objects, especially trees.

I recommend reading the release notes when using this feature. One stand-out note is the fact that it will not work with HDR (High Dynamic Range) in use. On my OLED 4K display, this is easily deactivated with a menu option in the picture contrast settings. For CLoD, I prefer to have HDR OFF anyway, to prevent frequently changing contrast during the constantly changing gameplay lighting conditions. All picture and color settings can still be manipulated using the Nvidia Control Panel or Nvidia Profile Inspector.

Those using LED screens will have to experiment, I guess...

I've noted that there's also another new voice in the contol panel... " Low Latency Mode " ( Disabled by default )...

Low latency mode has been available for a month or so... I have it enabled since it came out with no problems but I have not measured latency before and after to confirm any tangible improvement. In any case, I have no apparent latency issues on my computer setup.

Tested this in Time Spy.

Definite hit and results in instability on my overclock. A few crashes.

Haven't looked at it visually in cliffs. But. It has a hit.

I'm leaving it off for now.

So far I've done some early and brief tests on the DD server and it seems that at altitude there's no problem with it ( contacts more easily spotted and image more sharp ) but at very low altitude, and especially when there are burning fires/smokes/lots of buildings around, it seems to have instead quite a huge impact on the FPS ( at least in 4-2K resolution )...

this time with it on and then off using firestrike. (so hotter sytem second time round.)

big difference again on benchmarks,

it has a fairly big hit on numbers for me.

in game.. cant tell.. but i have a heavy duty rig.

for cliffs this would be no issue. but i do a lot of VR stuff... so...

Pretty much my same conclusion.I can get the same effect using my monitor/TV OSD without any impact on the performances.
What I've noted of positive somehow is that, at last here, the last drivers are a lot way better than the previous ones. Now also on 4K you can spot the contacts in the same way as at lower resolutions ( 2K, HD, etc ) so finally the game is fully playable also in 4K without being forced to lower the resolution so to don't lose the situation awareness.

Only tried it in DCS but it murdered my fps (but then most things murder my fps in DCS - Hell i only spent £2K on my rig what right do i have to expect it to run smoothly!!)

As i understand it, the feature is ported from reshade (?). Regardless, reshade offers significantly more control and choice of sharpening effects with the bonus you can switch them in and out on the fly. That said, i dunno if reshade is currently working with Clod.

Horses for courses but the geforce drivers pre Aug2019 seem kinder to my rig than the later ones at least marginally. Im especialy suspicious of the latency mode feature as this appears to be nothing more the a dumbing down of the pre rendered frames option with less transparency and fewer options..

The frame rate remains well above the 60 Hz maximum of the display with no bad behavior using Vertical Synch with the "Fast Synch" option ON. Bench mark FPS may suffer somewhat, but when using a TV screen at 60 Hz, who cares if it's 70 or 170 FPS?

Like most features, this needs to be evaluated on a system by system basis by individual users.

Here my only suggestion is ( to be absolutely sure that everything is running fine on your system with it activated ):

- Make a really low pass over the Calais city buildings area ( Possibly with some aircraft flying around ) on the DangerDog server ( Perfect, IMHO, for these kind of tests due to the presence of lots of AI aircraft around that area ): If everything goes well you're ok to go with it activated, if no you can take the necessary actions.

Better to notice the possible FPS drop during a test, that maybe be stuck with " postcards " while you are busy in a " serious " dogfight.

( Personally, in these occasions, I use this small rule: " 3 online tests gone ok = I'm ready to go "...After that, I'm in Odin's hands )
