Even after the server crashes, and the official/unofficial end to the map, we made 8 attempts on Cantibury with a group of 4 and often had to drop our bombs to defend and engage trying to protect ourselves.
I think Goering's message to his fighter unit commanders during the Battle of Britain was that 'the fighters must stay closer to the bombers'. Perhaps two or three fighters should be embedded with the bomber units to at least provide some measure of close protection. I appreciate the best protection is to block the defending fighters from reaching the bombers early but lone hunters will always get through. Our Stuka unit was hit by a lone Beaufighter and a single Spitfire soon after we took off and as we were forming up. A couple of friendly fighters patrolling above the airfield may have made all the difference.

Update from my previous post. It would appear we did have some close escort near our base. Whilst viewing my saved video from 'Hail Storm' I discovered at least one Me.109 bravely trying to fend off a Spitfire on my six. See attached screenshots. I was with DRock's schwarm and we had just taken-off from Marquise West. Unfortunately my Stuka was fatally damaged. In the second shot is the amazing image of one of our Stukas chasing a Beaufighter who had just attacked me. The Beaufighter has lost most of his tail plane. Whoever those brave Luftwaffe pilots were, thanks for your efforts .

    That was JG4.

They are the reason we made it to our targets.

If that was right at the start of the event, I believe that was me. It might have looked impressive but only because I forgot I was in a Stuka and my fighter instincts kicked in. Needless to say, I was made to pay for my hubris!

Yes Pans it was right at the beginning of the event and straight after take-off. You must have been the Stuka that took-off directly behind me. Thanks anyway for tackling that 'pesky' Beaufighter. I owe you a pint

    1st Sortie

The radio erupted with cheers shortly after the Spitfires reached the rendezvous, 10000ft above Manston.
A surprise attack from 2 Beaufighters and a Spitfire had caught a Stuka flight low, without fighter escorts.
Six enemy airframes destroyed or damaged. We knew it wouldn't last, the Beaus would have a hard time getting back.
A calm and collected voice muted the celebration:"109-10 o'clock-low!"
I follow my lead's dive, he lands a short burst on the 109 and climbs back up.
I tag him as well and loop around for a second pass. A vapour trail homes my sight onto his wing and it catches fire.
    20191218231922_1.jpg
I could see him fighting the controls,I doubt he made it ashore.
With no friendly plane in sight, I made my way back to the rendezvous, to find it swarming with activity.
The initial hunch I had came true. The Stuka raid was to hook around Margate to hit targets along the river Stour, up to Bekesbourne/Canterbury.
This time, we were ready. We caught up with 6 of them just North of Botany Bay.No escorts in sight.
I made 2 passes on the trailing bomber with good effect before getting jumped.
    20191218232556_1.jpg
Two unmarked 109's, one after the other, had a go, causing light damage to the elevator.
They were promptly intercepted themselves by 2 Beaufighters, leaving me space to shoot down a Stuka bomber near Herne,
push a 109 into a force landing by Plucks Gutter, mortally wounding the pilot of "white 14" Messerschmitt 109 and sharing a further kill with 2 other spits.
Red and I landed at Canterbury while it was under attack.

    2nd Sortie

Spawned in front of a Spitie taking off. The End.

    3rd Sortie

Chased down a 110 from St Mary's Bay two thirds across the Channel.
He goes in, but not before hitting my engine with his tail gunner.
    20191219002737_1.jpg
Got jumped by 109 "RED 1" whilst limping back. Paddled my way back.

When can we have a go next?

Re: ATAG ASSAULT No.6: Hail Storm

A few words from my point of view.

I joined Wukits' flight this time, as after the Tiger Moth event I tought that it would be great to fly with him again, and when I joined Team Speak I saw that he had the fewest wingmen.

We - 7 or 8 Ju87's - started our first sortie in Zutkerque. We were just forming up over the airfield when the first news arrived. DRock's team was wiped out still over France! Well, it's not a good start... But we have three squadrons of Stukas on different routes, so don't panic, it won't be easy but we can do this! We turned towards Dunkerque, then up north. When reached the height of Manston we turned west. Our target was the motorpool near Manston. As we were climbing higher and higher, more happier news were arriving: Noofy's team managed to hit his target and DRock's was closing in his too. We scanned the sky continously in the fear of jumped upon, but our journey was completely eventless. We didn't see any other plane, nor friend or foe. We reached our target at 3.5 km high when we met a pair of Spitfires. They were just making the first pass from ahead when my screen went completely black. I rolled back the server messages to find out what happened. I was shot down by flak. It felt like as it was the very first round of flak that was fired on us pilotkilled me at 3.5 km high. It was a little disappointment. But after I hit the ground, I was able to see again. I was turning around my burning wreckage in awe. Stukas were wailing down after each other around me in the distance, Spitties were roaring across the sky in search of the attackers, and explosions from bombs and planes could be heard from everywhere. It felt like I was sitting in the middle of a war movie!

As noone managed to get home in one piece, we spawned in for our second sortie, and my amazement just continued. I opened the canopy as I was preparing to start my engine. Other planes were also starting their engines one after each other, there were ones taxiing down to the runway, there was someone just taking off, and planes could be heard above us near and far. It was a beautiful symphony of planes, and the game felt astonishingly alive!
This time we took a more direct route to Manston and learning from the first sortie, we transmitted our position regularly to the escorts well in advance. Our flight was again eventless, and we met the enemy first again almost over the target. Several Spitties and a Beaufighter at 2.5 km high. It was again like a movie scene from the first row when two Spitties were attacking the leading plane one after each other, taking turns from below. I was trying to shoot at them but was afraid of shooting Wukits too, so had to be careful. Didn't have much time to think though, as I was being shot at too. With my radiator punctured and my elevator control gone, I didn't have high hopes of surviving much more, but I managed to stay on my path to target and I got a little time to breathe as the fighters turned after the others. A glance of hope emerged again. I was almost over Manston airfield, still feet wet thogh, but still flying. It seemed to me that I was the only one left from the squadron, or at least I was the farthest ahead. But the vision of dropping my bombs this time at last quickly vanished as my engine started to spit oil all over my windshield, and I started to loose altitude more quickly than getting closer to the target. As tracer rounds were starting to fly around me again I admitted my defeat and surrendered.

Meanwhile news were coming continuously from DRock and Noofy. They succesfully managed to destroy all of their targets one by one.
With only our main target left, we switched to 110's to launch an all-in attack. We were just took off when the server gave in.

What I was "sad" about a little: that I couldn't really contribute to our victory.
What I was happy about: we still almost managed to turn the map within two ours and
it was a great event, and I wish to thank all the organizers and participants for it!
