    TFS 5.0 New Special Effects Update.

    The current effects have been overhauled, with a large emphasis on efficiency and performance, as well as increased visual quality and realism.

    Particle numbers have been reduced across the board, in some cases using less than 20% the number used previously.

    This means the likelihood of a scene hitting the particle limit is greatly reduced, and scenes with a high amount of action (bombing runs, lots of environmental smoke, etc) should see improved performance.

    For instance the London raid images featured 10 large environmental smokes types, 50+ AA guns, and 4 bomber waves dropping 90 bombs into that area.

    FPS remained a constant 50-60 throughout!

    All particles respond to wind speed and direction, which allows for a really dynamic, visually immersive environment.

    Although these videos show no desert effects, the desert effects are coming along very nicely and will be shown off soon.

    Top stuff! Excellent work on the smokes. Also the sound effects for the bombs are fantastic.
    Love how the smoke actually merges together to create that full on smoke cloud.


    Also just noticed after re-watching that the sound effects for the 111s flying past the camera at a distance is amazing! Not sure if they are new sounds, but it sure sounds 90% real

    Nice work, thanks for sharing. One question, does the smoke fade into view now? If it does, is there any way of using the same way the smoke and clouds fade into view (extended clouds) on the buildings and landscape. Just trying to ask if there is a way to stop the pop up draw bubble yet and if not.... could the cloud fade be used the same way?

    Incredible work by all the team to get the effects looking this good. The way the smoke and debris lingers really adds to the immersion of a battlefield.

    I do have one question: is there any possibility to add shadows for these huge smoke plumes? Perhaps my eyes are deceiving me, but I could not notice any shadows for these effects, nor any reflection when they were over water. Adding this detail would really enhance the overall image, though I understand it could also detriment performance.

    Hands down, this has blown me away.. literally! I can't believe the things you guys are able to do with this game! The way the smoke boils out of the flames looks so realistic! It doesn't look like the effect is looping either. So much randomness. The way it flows in the wind and across the ground, will make trying to hit other targets from altitude almost impossible. Crews in real life struggled with this just as much as clouds and weather. Top notch job Gentleman! S! TFS! Thanks for Sharing Pattle! Game changer!

    Outstanding effects, TFS and Pat! I just love that realistic smoke and the tanker burning out in the estuary. The concussion effects and explosions when poor Eastchurch get's hit are also....just incredible!

    Going to have to go back and watch again...see if I can spot that oil can........ and Big Hilda's panties flying though the air! Crackin' work! Salute!

    I watched it again, and i suppose it might be a burning part of an airplane flying through the air, rather than a barrel.

    Well, I could have sworn that I commented on this last night, but I don't see my post. I must be getting old! But, really, this is absolutely fantastic. REALLY well done. Some of the most realistic looking smoke effects that I've yet to see in a flight simulator. The fire, also. And that tracer smoke coming from the '109...everything. Your hard work really shows, here.

    Superb work gents. The smoke, with the different colours and patterns is so realistic. I suppose if your rig is top notch those smoke columns will lead you nicely to the target from some good distance away. Hopefully even modest set-ups will see that smoke from distance.

    That's the idea. The footage in this video was captured using what would be considered a dated setup. Our effects guru has done and continues to do an amazing job of optimizing all of the particle effects, while at the same time improving their visual fidelity.

    Much improvement for sure. The biggest difference, if you look at actual combat photos, is that real smoke casts shadows and lots of them. Must be a difficult effect to model, but one can dream.
