Informations on the RAF airfields for a hypothetical improvement of the Channel map

    Hello all ,

I thought that if the TFS someday wanted to improve the channel map, the informations on English airfields during the Battle of Britain could be useful to them:

I love your Hawkinge airfield, Fred. I can’t imagine the time and effort you spent researching and creating it in the FMB.

    Cheers!

Thank you very much Snapper, it makes me very happy!

The template I made was Hawkinge around 1944.
If I have time I will modify it for a Hawkinge template in 1940. There is not much modification to do.

For the moment I am working on RAF North Weald. Too bad there are buildings that did not exist in 1940 and 1941. I also change the layout of taxiways and runways. The original grass runways also unfortunately appear !

    +1

I frequently jump into your Hawkinge airfield map to fly and then taxi around the airfield perri track just to look at your excellent work. Still yet to build a mission around it but hope to one day.

    Thanks Fred.

Great work Fred and thanks for posting.
What is interesting is the camouflage painted on the fields. That must have been a massive task. Also many of the airfields have suffered bomb damage with lines of filled in craters showing.

    Flak Boss.

Vickers Wellington Mk1c. OJ-F P2517 'F for Freddie' of No.149 Squadron, star of 'Target for Tonight' directed by Harry Watt released in July 1941.

Freddy prepares for an air test prior to departure from Ford on ops with No.149 Squadron for a daring daylight attack on Marshalling Yards in Caen France 31\1|21. ATAG Operation Milk Run. Target destroyed. Six Wellingtons, One Blenheim together with
their Spitfire escort returned safely. One Wellington crashed on landing at Ford.

    Thanks Flak Boss,

Although the airfields were camouflaged, they suffered a lot of damage !

I have a personal connection to North Weald.

My Father, who served in the RAF during the war, was demobilised in 1946 but was required to serve in the reserve for a number of years after that.

He spent 'Summer Camp' training each year at North Weald, as a member 601 County of London Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force. At this time the Squadron was flying de Haviland Vampires.

Many years later I had the chance to visit North Weald when I was in the RAF. It was by then (1970s) no longer in a very good state of repair. It was good to see the place though.

    Keep up the good work.

    Both airfields look superb Larry.

It always amazes me what can be done on this simulator.

    Thank you for sharing.
