    RAF paint Ral code anyone?

i have an old lamp that a neighbour gave me about 40 years ago.

it was green... the shade of the inside of the raf planes.

and got badly over painted by me as a kid

its now stripped and ready for re-painting.

can anyone confirm if RAL 6019 is the correct shade?

    presumably matt ?

and if anyone can recommend a heat proof primer and paint that would be great (spray cans prefereably !)

Re: RAF paint Ral code anyone?

Have no idea what the RAL code is but it is 'Eau de Nil'. This was interior cockpit colour WW2.

This was used inside vehicle cabs and coaches in the RAF well into the 1970s when the vehicles were all owned by the MOD and painted RAF blue on the outside.

The fact that there was such a plentiful supply meant many sundry items also got a coat of 'Eau de Nil' including office walls.

'Eau de Nil' can be all different shades.

I have seen some really light and some a lot darker. All depends on source and batch especially when dealing with large government contracts.

    Awesome!

    Thanks chaps !

    found this chart too.

was it matt Vamps liker regulare emulsion ? or more satin?

    obviouisly wasn't gloss.

    And paint here...

    https://www.paints4trade.com/heat-re...SABEgI4W_D_BwE

gloss though... which probably isnt right.

any idea if it was oil based or water based?

    Description

EAU DE NIL. A traditional single part Synthetic Coach Enamel paint, used in the cabs of most RAF specialist vehicles, including Fire Appliances, Land Rovers, airfield vehicles, tractors and lorries. Commonly called Cockpit Green this was the standard colour for the interior areas. It got the nickname of Cockpit Green from being used in the Older RAF aircraft (although this is a totally different shade). This name has stuck with us for all these years.

The 'Eau de Nil' that we used in the vehicles was gloss and that was what was used on anything else.

Check out the liberal use of 'Eau de Nil' inside the cab of this RAF Mk 6 Salamander Crash Tender.

Re: RAF paint Ral code anyone?

It really hard to tell on a pc screen.. but i think the paint on my lamp looks more like RAL 6019 than the now standardised Eau de Toilet.

Though as Vamps says.... and I'm paraphrasing him very accurately indeed..... It's whatever I want it to be.

You try spending several hours in a 39 seater coach, which has the interior painted in 'Eau de Nil', and you understand how soporific it is.

DerDa, Is that the Tamiya 1:32 Mk IX kit? looking good!

Highseas, are you still after the exact paint spec? I have the contact details (somewhere) of someone who should be able to help you - he paints aircraft (inc warbirds) for a living

Thanks for the offer. I've matched it as best I can to the old paint uner the newer paint... and think RAL 6019 is the closest to how it was.

its total guess work as my monitor isnt a special colour accurate one... but.... if it looks wrong when the paint arrives i can always get the other paint....

Basically it doesn't need to be spot on accruate just close enough !

    Not Tamiya, but Revell 1:32
Plus Eduard cockpit details plus a lot and lot of improvised things of my own.
Copper wire, wood for the seat and so on.
If I remember correctly I made the spade grip out of a toothpick

But mind: this is not a historical Spitfire but it is a Spit of our FG28. And for all the cockpitdetails and colour I used lots and lots of screenshots made from CloD.
There is a thread about building it here:
    https://www.wettringer-modellbauforu...threadID=60692
All in German I'm afraid, but lots of pictures.

Re: RAF paint Ral code anyone?

    Important announcement.

I have just received notification from the pain company that... and I quote... my "order of paint has been dispatched"

I'm quite giddy with excitement here at Lamp Refurbishment Headquarters.

    Quite giddy indeed...
