    I didn't know, but I researched

    https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_Hurricane

It had a single Browning machine gun loaded with tracer ammunition on each of the wings to aim
The serial production aircraft had additional armor for pilot, radiator and engine; and 40mm Vickers S cannons with 15 projectiles.
The outer supports of the wings were reinforced to support 4G with a weight of 3,874 kg.
The weight of the weaponry and the protective shield had a marginal impact on the performance of the aircraft.

Re: Hurricane IID Tank Buster! - TFS 5.0 Cliffs of Dover Blitz expansion - WIP first

fun fact (I read in one of my desert war books)

The crafty Germans used to set traps for the IId by sighting an MG immediately behind a damaged tank (but not too damaged, otherwise it wouldnt invite an attack) in a shell scrape pointing directly up. The IId would make its run over the damaged tank firing its 40mm and the MG would start firing upwards at the same time hoping to hit the IId as it overflew the damaged tank. i think the crafty Germans figured out the likely attack direction and thus could anticipate the direction the IId would fly.

Not sure how effective this was but it must have been reasonably effective to make it into a book i suppose...

Edit - found the reference page 103 of 'Hurricane and Messerschmidt' by Chaz Bowyer and Armand van Ishoven. Has a whole chapter on the IId / 6 Squadron and discusses this tactic. Says

'this was not as dangerous as it sounds as the aircraft would only collect 1 or 2 rounds, but a bullet in the glycol could bring the aircraft down, and once we knew about the trick we would make a point of banking away just before the tank'

I guess we might be able to replicate this on the Tobruk map...

The impact on top speed could only be marginal.
Otherwise the Hurri would have flown backwards ...

Agil I think it was not

I simply translated the WIKI data "

To remove a tank, the shots must be very precise and on the back, I think

Maybe the panzer, but I don't think it was very effective against the tiger.
They would be cannon fodder when they found enemy fighters

I wonder if they will be able to sink ships.
The Beaufighter with its 20 mm can sink a Minensuchboot (if it ever gets near enough, but oh how I love to see the animation, when the mast flies off ...) but not a freighter, wich I always thought a pity.
Two 40 mm should definitely be enough to sink smaller coastal vessels. I hope the new types of ships will offer some new possibilities

No.6 Squadron was one of 3 Squadrons operating Sepecat Jaguars from RAF Coltishall until the base closed in 2006.

They have always been known as The Flying Can openers and displayed the badge on their Jaguars

Re: Hurricane IID Tank Buster! - TFS 5.0 Cliffs of Dover Blitz expansion - WIP first

The Hurri IID was significantly slower than the standard Hurri II's... not only just because of the extra weight of the cannon, but also the increase in drag.

Maneuvered and climbed significantly worse due to the weight.

Not really capable of dealing with opposition fighters on their own... needed escort if opposed. Also more vulnerable than standard Hurris to AAA due to lower speed.

Were replaced by 60 lb rocket firing Hurricane IV's... which were not much faster, but which could maneuver better once the rockets were gone.

40mm cannon were quite a bit more accurate than rockets though.

Cannon were capable of taking out just about any tank when firing from the rear at the deck over the engine.

Cannon could fire AP rounds or HE rounds against soft targets. Maximum of 15 rounds per cannon carried.

I do wonder about its penetration performance, a quick search gave a muzzle velocity of just 570 m/s for the 3 lbs shot.

    http://www.quarryhs.co.uk/sgun.htm

"The 2½ lb AP shot first used in the "S" gun could penetrate 47 mm / 360 m /30 degrees (from the vertical), the later 3 lb shot improving this by 9%. These figures appear surprisingly high, given the low muzzle velocity, until it is remembered that the velocity of the firing aircraft must be added to that of the shot. In the case of a 240 mph attack speed, this amounts to 107 m/s."

The comparable German BK3.7 cannon fired its APCR anti tank rounds at 1150 m/s. An overall much lighter round but made from a high density tungsten alloy with a very high melting point.

L.Dv. 4000/10, Serie P, Blatt 2 from Dec. 1942 has some info on the 37 mm APCR used for the 3,7 cm BK.
    https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/uploa...1430529156.jpg

    3,7 cm Hartkernpanzergranatpatrone Leuchtspur ohne Zerleger (3,7 cm H-Pzgr.Patr. L'spur o. Zerl.)
    Projectile weight: 405 g with 8 g tolerances
    Core material: tungsten alloy
    Round weight: 1290 g

    V0: 1150 m/s
Penetration against an armor plate with a 100 kg/mm2 yield strength (Panzerplattenfestigkeit):
    100m/90 deg = 140 mm
    100m/60 deg. = 69 mm
    600m/90 deg. = 95 mm
    600m/60 deg. = 47 mm

Trials using the so called LittleJohn adapter would have put the Vickers S closer in performance to the BK3.7 but it never got accepted into service. However as the Vickers S was mostly used against early to mid war models of the PzIII/IV in North Africa it was good enough as it was.
