    Re: I Long Walk Home

    .......very thought provoking shot, Pat!

It reminds me that the remains of some sort of P40 were discovered in the desert, many years after the war in a remakable state of preservation, though many of the cockpit instruments had been stolen by souvenir hunters.

But...mysteriously......... no sign of Pienoir! Salute!

Makes you think how absolutely terrifying it would be to end up stuck in the desert, or floating on a life raft in the middle of the ocean. Escaping a quick death only to face a long, painful one. It’s a horrifying thought.

If you read 'The Straights of Messina' by J. Steinhoff you get an impression of this.
All in all it is a pretty dishonest book, but some parts stick in mind. The Pilots knew that there was no sea rescue in the Med. So whoever had to go down in the sea knew that with high probablility he would drown. A severe problem especially for aircraft with so little range as the 109 or the Spit.

Just curious but why do you think that Steinhoff's book is dishonest? I've always been under the impression that he had a "no bullshit" approach and no need to boast.

    Re: A Long Walk Home

He always had been extremely ambitious. The (without doubt unfair) way Göring treated the fighter pilots in the Med was basically the end to his career ambitions during the war. This nagged at him even when he was high ranking NATO commander and the book is an attempt to clear his name.

In his other (earlier) book 'Die Verschwörung der Jagdflieger' he clearly exaggerated the whole affair and especially his own role in it, at the same time diminuishing the part his 'friend' Lützow played, who was dead and no longer able to object.

So basically he was all his life working on the myth that he had been an outstanding figher commander as well as (almost) a resistance fighter.
Ilse Krupinski's first impression when she met him during the war was: 'Was für ein Lackaffe.'

Kurt Braatz, a very knowledgable historian specialised on aviation history accuses him of 'fabulieren' (telling untrue stories) in his book.

    Re: A Long Walk Home

Interesting info DerDa, after reading "A Higher Call" by Adam Makos detailing a number of these pilots, it is interesting to hear about them from other stages and points in life.
