Sorry if I piss off the US members of this board but I have to comment:
This film is just one more typical American Producer's "We won the war, no one else matters" attempt to grab of the credit for winning World War II.
The British and Canadian Navies commanded the convoys in the North Atlantic throughout the war and the majority of the escorts and nearly all if not all of the Convoy commanders were British and Canadian.
All US or other nationality convoys headed for Britain made their way up the East coast of the US to Halifax Canada, were organized into Atlantic convoys and then crossed to Britain. These East Coast convoys were often commanded and escorted by the US Navy... but the coast was as far as they went.
The Royal Canadian Navy commanded all Convoys from Halifax to mid Atlantic and they handed the convoy over to the British who took the convoys the rest of the way. The RCN was the 3rd biggest navy in the world at the end of WW2... they had a huge number of escort vessels used to protect the convoys. The British and Canadians fought the Wolfpacks to a defeat and won the convoy war.
At the time of the war which is supposedly covered by this film the US Navy was focused on convoys along the East Coast and in the Caribbean.... and they were doing a piss poor job... one reason it was called the 'Happy Time" by U-Boat commanders.
Film is really a dis-service to British and Canadian contributions to winning the war if it shows an American commanding an Atlantic convoy in this time period.
Canadians and British don't go claiming to have won the Battle of Midway... time for Americans to give up trying to claim credit for winning the Battle of the North Atlantic.

Knowing Hanks "helped" with Band of Brothers, i hoped this will also be in the same league. But while watching the trailer I got the feeling I was watching a killer shark horror movie trailer.
Who knows, perhaps it's just the trailer, made in this way so it caters to the audience.

Going by the trailer, this is hardly the biggest problem with this movie...but there were US Navy escorted convoys throughout the war traveling to various destinations. I don't know the time period, circumstances, or even originating port supposedly portrayed in this movie. But if early war, it's plausible as in 1941 USN (fully, maybe at times partially?) escorted convoys happened between Canada and Iceland. Convoy HX 156 for example was escorted by Gleaves, Clemson, Benson and Wickes class destroyers of the U.S. Navy. This ended up with the loss of the first U.S. Navy warship in the European war, USS Reuben James.
If later in the war, some faster UG convoys (Chesapeake Bay to the Med) and CU (to the British Isles) convoys were escorted by the U.S. Navy, while RN and RCN focused on slower HX, SC and ON convoys. It's all plausible enough.

based on 1942 and it does say multi national convoy.

My response was mostly as a counterpoint to the quoted post, but 1942 with a multi-national convoy wouldn't be a problem from a year standpoint, nor would it be out of the question that a U.S. destroyer could be the flagship of that escort group, with an American commanding that group. While a Canadian or English based convoy escort (and characters) might have been more common and likely, it's not hard to understand why Hollywood and guys like Tom Hanks would choose an American perspective....
But, it really doesn't matter, as unless that trailer is just an example of a really poor marketing angle, this movie looks disappointing at best. When I first heard of this, I was expecting something realistic, isolating and unnerving. A high quality WWII naval movie. Instead it makes U-571 look like a true story.

certainly hope its not filled with all that crappy CGI like "Midway "was !!!

This is a film that should be very relevant to my interests; U-boats and the Battle of the Atlantic are my other major interest in WW2. This trailer looks terrible, however. I'm sure Tom Hanks plays a brilliant role as he does in pretty much everything else, but the action looks like over the top dramatic, sensationalist BS.
The Cruel Sea said all that needs to be said about the battle of the Atlantic from a British perspective and Das Boot did the say for the german side, this new movie has big shoes to fill
There was a significant difference between convoys between Iceland and convoys to Britain.
The Iceland convoy you mention was probably a troop convoy which was adding the US garrison to Iceland, as that country was taken over by the Allies after Norway fell to the Nazis.
That convoy was nothing to do with the hundreds of continuous convoys which went to Britain to maintain its food supply and to supply war materials for its factories. Those were what the Battle of the Atlantic was all about. The Iceland convoy would turn around and go back to the US not continue to Britain and it would have been much smaller.
The same applies any convoys from the US directly to the Med, via the mid or south Atlantic... those would be troop convoys or ammunition supply convoys for the various invasions which happened in the Med... nothing to do with the main convoy route in the North Atlantic.
There were individual US ships assigned to escort North Atlantic convoys in 1941-42, but by 1943 all the escorts were British or Canadian.
Canadian Warships even went south to New York, the main port for the US on the East Coast, to pick up the escort of the convoys.
The North Atlantic convoys to Britain went from Halifax to Liverpool or other British west coast ports because that was the shortest route. New York ships would meet the convoys at Halifax.
Here's a link to the biggest ever convoy escorted to Britain, which originated in New York and Halifax... RCN and RN escorts were the majority of the escorts even from New York and commanded the convoy:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convoy_HX_300
The key was to keep the distance as short as possible between N America and Britain because the mid Atlantic was the most dangerous spot since aircraft patrols could not go that far until later in the war when the escort carriers were available with Swordfish and Avengers to attack the U-Boats.
This film does say "North Atlantic" and it is frankly bullshit to suggest these North Atlantic Convoys were led by American Destroyers and US commanders.
The Battle of the Atlantic was as crucial a battle as any in the Pacific... at one point the U-Boats were sinking so many ships it looked like Britain could no longer be supplied. Without Britain as a viable base there could be no Normandy Invasion, no Strategic Bombing campaign, nothing. Winston Churchill said the U-Boats were the only threat he really worried about... in his opinion, the Battle of Britain was far less of a concern. The Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy won the Battle of the Atlantic.
This film is a disservice to the men who sailed with the convoys. Canadians mark 'Battle of the Atlantic Sunday' every year in Halifax to commemorate the thousands of Merchant Navy, Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy seamen who lost their lives keeping the supply lines open to Britain.

Vickers Wellington Mk1c. OJ-F P2517 'F for Freddie' of No.149 Squadron, star of 'Target for Tonight' directed by Harry Watt released in July 1941.
Freddy prepares for an air test prior to departure from Ford on ops with No.149 Squadron for a daring daylight attack on Marshalling Yards in Caen France 31\1|21. ATAG Operation Milk Run. Target destroyed. Six Wellingtons, One Blenheim together with
their Spitfire escort returned safely. One Wellington crashed on landing at Ford.
Was very excited when I saw the trailer pop up in my recommendeds on YT, but my interest started to sour as the trailer progressed.
Edit: whats up with the massive custom decals on the Uboats?? I'm no expert and people did like to customize their aircraft/vehicles etc......but Uboats? I don't think it was a fancy dress party that they were there for. xD
Sorry, temporary spasm over.
Edit2: Tom Hanks would be perfect in a movie like this! Just one too many weird/out of place bits, bobs and dialogues from what I can see in the trailer.
Similarly to Pans, a movie like this should/would be of great interest to me and relevance to me as this is exactly what my grandfather did in the War. Protecting convoys while up in the Swordfish (plus some other naval action as a sailor on various ships).
I love Tom Hanks, and I feel like he would nail any role he was given. I did read somewhere recently about an actress who had stared in a truly award winningly rubbish film. She said that every actor has to have at least one movie that they could talk about how terrible it was, "Oh what was your one?"
I don't feel that this will be much different or better in terms of CGI or writing than others of its class.
Frankly I felt it looked a bit like it should be "World of Warships: The Movie," it does seem a lot like one of their promotions, though I know it isn't haha!
But, still, there will be other opportunities, and while epics such as Waterloo might not seem like they will come again, I do believe that there will be that one film writer who comes out of his shell and makes something of a similar epic proportion. His movie probably would be underrated and his career on the big screen go under due to dreadful box office results, but his/their movie will still be there at the end of the day
For all those who may be a bit depressed about movies lacking historical viability/realistic hollywood-life ratio, and are wanting a historically accurate naval setting which, while a fictitious tale, is actually more historically realistic than most that have been made, please give Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World with Russell Crowe a watch!
Absolutely loved it!!
Have not read the series of books the movie was based on yet, but will have to get a hold of them too at some stage.

100% agreement!
Great movie!
But the books are several classes above still.
Must have read them a dozen times, all twenty of them.
And what do I do, when I don't read them and don't fly Clod?

That's a lot of matchsticks.
Still. It demonstrates the wisdom of working with a medium that is in ready supply.
Really hard to get the parts these days for my toilet roll modelling.
I only got two bits of the first mast done on my ship.

DerDa that looks fantastic! I would LOVE to get into doing those kinds of models. How awesome would it be to have a room full of those kinds of display pieces
Will have to see about getting a hold of those books too
Dunno about you lot, but I thoroughly enjoyed Greyhound for entertainment value.
Was prepped for the cgi and it wasnt bad at all. Compared to some of the flying movie cgi stuff, this was bloody brilliant.
Whoever did the sound/music for this deserves a medal.
The pace of the movie though was what really got me hooked. It was almost 90 minutes of non stop tension.
Frantic action and entertaining, if you don't try an nitpick it.
I am not fussed with the pissing contest (US/UK/CA) or historical accuracy to be frank, I don't think that was the intention of the film at all, but as ex navy it appeals to me, just because I suppose
If it's brown, shoot it down!
Oops! Make that a “LIKE”. My dog jumped in my lap as I was hitting LIKE.
+1
If you watch it like you watch avengers or other action movie, is good.
If you expect it to be a documentary, you will be disappointed.
If you watch it with your significant other, don't make the same mistake as I did and say things like "that's BS"

Yep good entertainment. Nice visuals and appreciate the 'straight into it' tension that plays throughout, with very little back story distraction.
The real let down for me is those goofy sinister voiced taunting radio messages and accompanying creepy music. It turns a tense, relentless war yarn into a 'for boys' comic book movie - 'Warlord' / 'Victor' / 'Commando' for those of us old enough to recall.
Despite historical context error and niggles like the frequent use of radio communication between ships instead of signal lamps it's a fun 90 minutes when you don't have 3 1/2 hrs spare for Das Boot.
