Book Recommendation during a time of Social Isolation

Around the world many of us are in the process of a Social Distancing, but should not allow it to become Social Isolation. So I am recommending this small book, The Snow Swan by Paul Gallico. Just a short read, makes me cry whenever I read it again.

I see it is also available as a 50 in movie on YouTube.

On the desolate Essex marshes, a young girl named Fritha arrives at a remote lighthouse seeking help from its lonely inhabitant: Philip Rhayader, a crippled artist who has established a bird sanctuary on his land. The girl brings to him a wounded snow goose, which the gentle Philip takes under his care. Soon a friendship blossoms as he and Fritha nurse the bird back to health, though as the years pass, Fritha visits the lighthouse only when the snow goose is there. Then the outbreak of World War II draws Philip away from his home to help in the war effort - and suddenly Fritha has a new reason to return to the lighthouse.

Beautifully written all the way through to its powerful ending, The Snow Goose has been in print since its original publication in 1941.

Hi Damon....good to hear you are keeping well. That is an excellent tip for a good read and happens to be my brother's favourite book of all time!

I am reading a little book (only 160 pages) called: 'Six Weeks of BLENHEIM SUMMER: One Pilot's Extraordinary Account of the Battle of France' by Alastair Panton. This is what it says on the blurb at the back:


Flying Officer Alastair Panton was just twenty-three when his squadron deployed across the Channel in the defence of France. They were desperate days.

Pushed back to the beaches as the German Blitzkrieg rolled through the Low Countries and into France, by June 4th 1940 the evacuation of the Allies from Dunkirk was complete. A little over two weeks later France surrendered.

Flying vital, dangerous, low-level missions throughout the campaign in support of the troops on the ground, Panton's beloved but poorly defended Bristol Blenheim was easy meat for the marauding Messerschmitts.

Six weeks of Blenheim Summer is a lost classic; one of the most moving, vivid and powerful accounts of war in the air ever written.


It's quite a gentle read and you can almost hear the new leaves rustling on the French boulevards.....smell the countryside. This book could have been written by ATAG_Snarglepuss and ATAG_Pro-Armis, who, as we all know, often take to the air in their trusty Blenheim 'steeds' to 'smite the foe most mightily'......(Ha ha).... only to end up as a smoking heap around Le Havre, Rouen Boos or elsewhere on the ATAG Cherbourge map. For this is where Panton's story unfolds and I found it useful to have a good map of France on your lap as I read so I could follow the Blenheim sorties, as the aircraft were forced west by the advancing Blue....sorry, Nazi hourdes! A lovely little book, sensitively written, which truly captures the atmosphere of that frightning summer....not, dare I say,....... too unlike this one!
