Hello all,
what does the appendix / addition 'Early' or 'Late' tell me about a certain aircraft type?
Which countries officially produced any WWII airplane under such a label?

A stab in the dark here but maybe Oleg built in the capacity for squadron skins/decals to reflect whatever stage of the war u were wanting to simulate.
Hopefully Buzz will be along with the definitive explanation.
System specs:
Gaming laptop: Metabox P750ZM, CPU Intel i7-4790K @ 4GHz, GTX 980m with 8Gb DDR5 VRAM, 16Gb Dual channel DDR3 RAM, 2 x Samsung EVO 840 500Gb SSDs, Win10 Home 64bit.
Gaming PC: MSI PRO Z690 WIFI DDR5 mobo, Intel i5 12600KF cpu, 32Gb Corsair DDR5 5200Mhz RAM, Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB M2 SSD, Corsair 850w psu, MSI RTX 3070 8GB vram vid card, Windows 10 Home 64bit.
Additionally it might refer that aircraft on all sides were in constant development as technical advances were made and this indicates early to later versions of the same aircraft. Early versions were upgraded or actually phased out as newer ones took their place. This enables players to choose aircraft on both sides that reflect those in use during the same time period. There's obviously an unfair advantage for early and late aircraft opposing each other that were not in actual use historically at the time. Of course these changes were implemented gradually and all through the war there were occasions where each side gained an advantage over the other.

Essentially these aircraft are the same type and model designation but with small upgrades or changes added onto the later versions.
For example: The Bf. 109 E4 (late) is exactly the same as the Bf. 109 E4 but it has the armoured head rest added on. Such a change was obviously not enough for a full model designation change but to differentiate them in the sim they use early or late.
These are not official manufacturer namings... just TF names to allow players to differentiate between different models.
The fact is, the system of creating only one model of a give aircraft type means that aircraft is not properly represented over its lifetime.
The different sides were continually updating and improving their weapons, aircraft were no different.
For example, Messerschmitt might have called the Bf-109F-4 model by one name throughout its service career, but the aircraft had different allowable engine boost ratings, at different time periods. Which made a big difference to the way it performed.
So we differentiate and create two separate versions in the game.
It would be great if an approach similar to the loadout menu of IL-2 Great Battles could be adopted at some point. Instead of having 3 different aircraft types in the game of essentially the same model there would be only 1 with different options to choose from, for example a Bf109F-2 with optional top part of the pilot armor, optional MG151/20 instead of the 15mm model and of course the usual suite of bombs or drop tank, etc. Not sure how much time and effort that means but it would help slim down the aircraft tree and make it more transparent.
