    Cargo ships?

Just something I was thinking about the other day:

I may have missed an announcement and I'm sure TF is making new naval assets for the Med theatre but is there a list anywhere of what new ships are coming to IL2?

I'm honeslty most interested in a bigger variety of cargo and other civillian ships. Currently every convoy is just full of medium tankers but it would be neat if they could be a mix of tankers, bulk carriers, passenger ships even, and some armed merchantmen as well? It would also be nice to have a few more variants for convoy escorts apart from the Flower corvette, maybe a destroyer?

I'm sure TF is making at least some of these. Is there a list anywhere? Obviously this is not a super important feature compared to the actual flying related stuff but it would be a little more immersive having more variety of ships.

    Re: Cargo ships?

We will have four new Cargo ships to complement the existing tanker.

    Small Coastal Freighter
    Coastal Freighter
    Sea Going Freighter
    Older WWI era Freighter

They will be shown in updates soon.

We hope to allow their light AAA weapons to be mannable... but can't promise for sure.

Thats good news. Be very nice to see some variation. Was afraid we were going to be limited to those already there. Much of those attacked by RAF around holland/norway/channel isle were smaller than the mediums we have ie<5000tons. Similar during BoB, most freighters were small, the Munsterland size were something of a rarity. Would guess the same would be true around coast of N Africa.
Will we be able to add AA (as can be done with current unarmed tankers/freighters) or will it be pre-defined?

Yes, the coastal freighter is probably 5000 tons or under... and the small one is likely 250 tons or less.

The Freighter is probably 8-10000 tons and the WWI version is similar.

And yes, you can add AAA as necessary to the merchant ships.

Oh I wasnt looking to add it - those bloody minesuchbooten dont need any blooming help.
250tons, hehe RAF considered too small (in norway) although apparently the pilots definition of 500tons was pretty much at odds with reality anyway (if I wanted to recognise ships I'd have joined the navy).

Thanks for your reply Buzz - keep safe down there

Spitfires will be flyable and able to fight in North Africa in TF5.

Thanks Buzzsaw! Looking forward to seeing some pictures. Honestly I got excited about these because I saw in a video of DCS WWII some pretty cool looking freighters and was hoping that CloD would get some more ship variety as well. Can't wait to set my bomb fuses to 11 seconds and get on the deck at 250mph....

Spitfires arrived in Africa in March/April 1942.

Hey maybe I'm doing convoy patrol in my Hurricane hunting down Ju-88s and those newly equipped torpedo Heinkels!

    Sorry, you are mistaken.

Spitfires were operational from May.... they saw their first combat in June 1942 during the Gazala battles... No. 145 Squadron.

Flt Lt. Joseph Sabourin, a Canadian pilot, got the first victory by a Spitfire in N Africa when he shot down a 109 on June 8th.

    https://acesofww2.com/can/aces/sabourin.htm

No. 145 flew patrols etc. prior to that and so they were a historical part of what we are replicating with the game.

The TF 5.0 module in purely historical terms goes from December 1940 to the end of June 1942... i.e. end of the Gazala battles, although theoretically if players want to create scenarios where Tobruk doesn't fall, play could continue into July/August.
