    Heads up display

When playing the original Il-2 Sturmovik. I thought I remembered a heads up display that showed heading, altitude, airspeed. I don't see such a display in CLOD or CLOD Blitz. I do see one in CLOD Stalingrad. I can't find anything anything in control settings which turns such a display on. It would be helpful if such a feature is available because it's difficult to read gauges. Am I missing something or is that the way the game is setup?

    Re: Heads up display

    Hi Ray,

    Welcome to the forum!

As you've been finding, there is no heads up display as found in some of the other WW2 flight sims. Here's a tip that I use which is very, very handy for keeping an eye on temps in the middle of a dogfight when you can't be taking your eyes off your opponent for more than a split second without losing Situational Awareness...and ultimately the fight.

I program a joystick key for Glance at Dashboard (note the red arrow):

    Z Glance at Dashboard.jpg

As an example, the default cockpit view and even the zoomed out Spitfire cockpit view - as beautiful as they are - ain't the greatest in times of great stress to pick out tiny analog instruments...at least not for my squinty eyes. LOL

    Z1 Spitfire 2a default view.jpg

    Z2 Spitfire 2a zoomed out view.jpg

But, a quick press of the Glance at Dashboard key on my joystick gives me a momentary clear glance at my critical instruments (temps, speed, altitude, etc) and then instantly switch back to whatever view I was holding when I let that key go.

    Z3 Spitfire 2a Glance at Dashboard.jpg

It's not perfect, but it's actually quite realistic IMHO since our eyeballs in a real cockpit would likely be superior in quickly scanning critical instruments than instruments on a monitor screen.

Give it a try - no harm, no foul. Hope it works for you.

    Cheers,

    Snapper

Ray, you could have look at a little program called virtual cockpit, it is in the downloads section, and with a little tweaking its quite good. Personally I would like to see compass heading as an information window or HUD, as the compass in British planes is usually placed behind the sofa

Thanks for that. I noticed the awkward location of the compass.

Why not just fly the Sim the way it was designed? It's not supposed to be easy, it's supposed to be realistic... and it is.
The rewards of doing things the way the great pilots of WWII did is a great objective for any player.
Flying realistically also levels the playing field for all participants.

I wasn't going to bring it up but since you asked I feel obliged to give you an honest response. My primary reason for asking the question comes down to a matter of time constraints. I simply do not have a lot of time to spare to play this game. I primarily wish to exercise and develop my skills as a virtual fighter pilot in virtual WW2 aircraft. In short, I want to duke it out with an opposing pilot. I don't want to spend a lot of precious time trying to find someone to engage, get shot down, go on a long, drawn out hunt, engage in a brief fight, get shot down and do it all over again. I'm pretty sure there are others like me out there with the same goals. I like the realism of cockpit only but frankly, the instrument panels in these models are a little hard to see without doing a lot of panning and zooming which is quite time consuming as well.

I don't want to play a game like War Thunder because from what I've seen on YouTube it appears a little too arcade for my tastes, kind of like Wings of War only with better graphics. No offense intended to any fans out there. I took a hiatus from the original Il-2 about 13 years ago. I played on Hyperlobby and there were a lot of dog fighting servers with different levels of realism. Things have changed a bit since then but I'm sure there are like minded individuals who have set up servers for this kind of action who also wish to maximize dogfighting opportunities while minimizing boring holes through the sky. Different strokes for different folks. Like one of the gents said above, "I find it hard enough trying to live real life realsitically."

Unfortunately in CloD they forget even to program a key for "glance at compass", similar to what exist in DCS and Bo'X (although not necessary in this game, due the HUD).

    https://s27.postimg.cc/8unvlcnqb/P_8_Mk_IX.jpg

Result that is more easy navigate using the sun, stars... as reference than English compass in CloD.

BTW - What is the puzzled is that neither CloD, neither DCS, neither Bo'X are able to model Spitfire compass correct, each game has errors that prevents use this instruments like should.

Have you tried DangerDogz server? It allows external views, it uses map icons that will quickly show you where your opponents and targets are, it uses labels so that when you get close enough to an aircraft you will see a label indicating the aircraft for AI or the pilots call-sign if it's a breather pilot, or something like that; not entirely sure as I rarely fly on DangerDogz server.

Are you using any form of head tracking?

Can be had in various guises for small money to larger money.

Track IR is the most known.

There are other options. And they let you look around using your head. Not with key bindings.

Feel free to pm me. I've used a few of the options.

Head tracking is a game changer. (Irrespective of the sim)

Thank you for the offer to assist. I have a TrackIR 3. Trying to make it work. If that fails I'm going try the Delanclip.

    Re: Heads up display

I must agree with TWC_Padre on servers. ATAG and TWC both operate on the "Fully Realistic" gaming model but we all know that there are a few shortcuts available for people who don't want to spend the time learning all the techniques and procedures. For the sake of realism, these shortcuts are quite limited here.

For learning the mechanics of RAF WW2 airplanes, or for just having fun in a "Video game" experience, servers like "Danger Dogs" might be more suitable. I believe that most proficient gamers eventually want to graduate to more challenging simulations like ATAG or TWC.

    We all started somewhere.

Thanks for the suggestion. "Danger Dogs" sounds what I'm looking. At age 70 I don't have the time to learn how to be an aviator all over again. Did that once in the Army when I was in my twenties. Don't have the time or energy to do that again, virtual or for real. What does the acronym "TWC" mean?

Danger dogs is a very popular server, with just the right blend of realism and fun for many people, It is not an arcade experience by any means. flight model and complex engine management are same as "full real" servers, only major difference is that Danger dogs has map icons turned on, helps get you into the action faster and with spotting, which in CLOD takes a while to get used to. Map icons switched on is also a bit of a leveler between the weaker and stronger pilots, you don't get bounced as easily. one problem with danger dogs is that the maps icons can make you lazy if you rely on then for spotting too much and you will be a bit slower to spot in full real servers as your situ awareness is a little weaker.

only advice I would suggest re choosing a server to play is "follow the Crowd", the more people on a server the better the fun and excitement. Look forward to seeing you soon in the air.

TWC = The Wreaking Crew, I think
