    Fresh Install. Windows 10 Questions?

    Greetings All,
Been grounded for a long spell but in getting ready for the new update I finally took the plunge and upgraded my Windows 7 Pro rig to a bigger SSD and a new Windows 10 Pro install. So far so good. Was able to get Blitz installed and my settings imported. I was also able to get my CH gear and software working. And Track IR going. I'm in the process of getting used to Windows 10. My questions are, Any tips or recommendations on system settings and configurations? Should Nagle's Algorithm be disabled? Any graphics setting/driver advice would be appreciated. Also I need to get up to speed comms wise as well. Not sure what has, if anything changed there. Thanks in advance.

    Graphics.

    I have an Nvidia card.

I use geforece experience and always keep the drivers up to date. I havce never had any driver issues on any game inclusing cliffs for erm... at least 10 years now.

I keep all drivers updated always... and install the latest windows updates whenever they are available. There is a lot of talk on these forums about windows breaking cliffs. I have never found that to be the case if you keep everything up to date.

But I'm not everyone else... so...

I also keep regular backups of my drives by cloning them every month or two.

Oh.. actually there was one time when windows 10 just unistalled itself... No idea why... I put my backup drive in... recloned... and was back up and running within an hour.

but that seems to have been an isolated case and it was many many builds ago.

I left everything in the Nvdiia control panel as standard up until i got a gysnc monitor... And then I turned fast sync on. The rest is standard settings. I played around with these for quite a while and after a long time (most of which was probably wasted) I came to the conclusion it had been a massive waste of my time.

as far as in game settings go for Cliffs I run everythiong at high... I have far static shadows OFF (it's a massive resource drain) and extended clouds ON (its not a noticable resource drain)

    That's about it

if your card isn't up to High settings... maybe go down to Medium on a few and run some FPS tests.

I have seen no noticable differnece going from High settings to anything "higher" so... have just left them at High. Been like that since I had a 980ti and is still like that on a 2080ti

    hope that helps a little.

Thanks for your replies! I've been wandering around W10 for a few days now. Really like the built in FPS/performance utility. No need to install Fraps.
Following your lead with latest drivers. Sim runs smooth. I am very pleased with 10 so far. Should have done it sooner. My biggest hold back was my CH Control Manager software but it seems to work fine. Oooooops................fingers crossed.

Re: Fresh Install. Windows 10 Questions?

I've recently upgraded to 10 as well. CH manager is working fine for me after about 6 weeks. I did the same research as you are doing but really didn't find much that was recommended to be changed. Most online info suggested that many of the W7 tips & tricks are not needed anymore.

I do use Bill2's process manager to force games onto certain cores. Apparently core parking is optimised in W10 so no need to force that on.

If you haven't installed your motherboard chipset drivers manually, it might be worth checking that W10 has installed the latest ones.

    Regards,

Curious is that several gamer's are not able to pair CH software and Windows 10, including CH support.

I have tried several "tweaks" in Windows 10, but confess that don't see nothing different in practice. But my computer is for Games and Internet only, few softwares installed.

Anyway will try disable this "Nagle algorithm that you mention.

Re: Fresh Install. Windows 10 Questions?

I upgraded a W7 Pro install to W10 Pro. Did a clean W7 install on the new SSD, installed all my motherboard drivers and activated Windows. Then went to the Windows 10 download page and upgraded. I'm not sure if Windows upgraded my MB drivers or not. The upgrade did install an NVidia driver and control panel. All is working well and Device Manager looks good.

May not be necessary but I installed the little CH start up program(CMstart.exe) in Windows start folder. Control Manager seems to function as in W7.

Re: Fresh Install. Windows 10 Questions?

    Good to hear

    Windows 10 works great.

The reluctance to swap from older systems today is very much like those from the past.

Mainly seems to be the mind set of "if it aint broke dont fix it" (the ultimate kiss of death for inovation).

In the later 90's moving from DOS based Windows 3.11 to Windows 95 seemed alarming. It wasn't though in reality.

Here is the thing: If you want to run any software going forwards... keep your stuff up to date.

I drive a car which was built in 1978 (Because it's cool as hell and so am I )

    BUT

I run an up-to-date PC. Because I have no intention of living in the past in that regard.

Well an update CH Control Manager. My Blitz map loads automatically when I start my PC, just like in XP and W7 with the CMstart.exe. BUT! If I load a different map I have to reboot. Then the new map works. Oh well, not a deal breaker.

In DCS forum someone post that need disable Microsoft Store (who need this?) for load CH Manager maps without issues.
Click over Start button and type "Microsoft Store" for access their settings.

Anyway, if don't solve and you really need keyboard emulation, Joystick Gremlin is viable alternative, capable of join controllers of different brands in one virtual - if you bypass the installation of vJoy, required for Joystick Gremlin.

I need to report back after a few days but the MS Store thing seemed to work! Thanks again! BTW Didn't mean for this to turn into a CH tread but hopefully this might help some folks.

You can start CM and load maps from command prompt. My game start icons are linked to a bat file that loads the correct map then starts the game. I can post example if you're interested.

Re: Fresh Install. Windows 10 Questions?

To launch a CH map with CLoD:

Paste this into a new notepad document, save it and change the file extension from .txt to .bat

    @echo off
    cd /d C:\Program Files (x86)\CH Products
    start CHCtlMgr.exe "C:\Users\XXXXXX\Documents\CH Control Manager\Maps\CLoD 2020.map"
    start steam://rungameid/754530
    exit

XXXXXX = your Windows user name

Change the file location to where CHmgr is located and change the name of the map to your map.

You can get the Steam 'rungameid' by using the create desktop icon option in Steam, then look what the I.D. is.

    Regards,

Re: Fresh Install. Windows 10 Questions?

Some tips about win 10 pro:

    - Disable Cortana ( Almost useless )
    - Edit the Registry so to block the automatic updates of your devices ( This avoid to have the controls of the game messed up all of a sudden or the device not recognised anymore )
    - Disable anything you can about Microsoft picking up ( silenty and in the background ) your personal data for some " allegedly " new never well cleared internal researches of Microsoft. In reality they try only to still your datas and habits to then bombard you of advertising on your internet browser. This is a new feature of Win10 Pro, be advised.
    - Disable all the unnecessary onscreen notifications ( otherwise you'll get a lot of messages on sceen while playing a game about updates, virus scans, etc

Win 10 Pro is an excellent OS, it requires only to be setted corretly. If you'll succeed in this Win10 Pro is probably one of the best OS ever made by the Microsoft company IMHO. I have it from 2017 and after the initial setup it had never given me a problem. Stable, safe and quite easy to be used once you get accustomed to its basics procedures.

As always the good rules applies or rather:

    - If you don't know how to do a thing leave it has it is. Surely better than messing up your OS or damaging your PC

    - Before modifying anything make always a backup of the file/s of interest and save a restore point before of any major modifications to your OS

    - Stay away from any kind of video card overclocking. That's only the best way to fry quickly your video card in exchange for very few small gains. If you have a Fiat 500 you can't pretend having it going like a Ferrari. Live and be happy with what you have available without trying to get super performances from something not designed for them.

    - Don't trust all that you read on the net about how to improve the performances of your PC. 99% of them are just useless things not impacting positively your OS at all

    - Stay away from sites like Youporn. The Church says that, in the long run, visiting them too much, renders men blind so your contacts spotting capability could lower then to very dangerous low levels due to this! ( Sorry I haven't resisted )
