    desert Map question probably easy

    Is there any magnetic deviation on the Tobruk map I heard 1 deg but maybe east maybe west do we know what it is ??

    It is the magnetic declination (the deviation is the +/- error(s) induced by magnetic interference in the plane, it is different for each plane, and it depends on heading).

    Declination was 1.5 degrees West in Tobruk in 1941 (same side as in the Channel map).

    Declination should therefore be added to your desired heading (i.e. if you want to fly geographic south, you must head 181-182).

    Not much, but on very long distances over water or sand, it can make you miss your target, especially when flying on the deck (little visibility of significant way-points).

    You may check the decilation at sdc.gfz-potsdam.de/igrf-declination-calculator/

    In 1941 the declination in Toburk was O°-57'. Thats a little less than 1° West or -1°. If you counted from True North to Magnetic North, you have to added.

    As far as I know the declination in the Canal-Area was in 1940 8° West.
