    Favourite Features

Just thought I would make a post where we can discuss everyone's favourite features from the most recent update for Cliffs!
Feel free to share screenshots too!

For me I have just noticed the wake effect of the engines on the ground is looking absolutely shmick, and lovin' it!
Also the .303s in the cockpits for the Hurris and Spits sounds excellent!
Haven't got any screenshots of the wake effect yet, but here is one from just before it appears

    Re: Favourite Features

well I liked finding holes in ships , I laughed at finding a clod map on an easel in a British airfield , bombs make pretty good sounds falling and hitting water , the new planes are fun and fly better in my opinion even though I have only scratches the surface of things to fly and learn . The Brits got the best of it but my blue bombers fly so well I am not disappointed .
the geography is well done even though the green fields of England are nicer I am slowly learning to appreciate the desert . I am hoping that by natural progression we will get some new maps over time as folks try their hand at making a few for us here and there. Thats a gift I do not have . The water looks great the airfields are a little lean on buildings but maybe thats how it was I am not sure. The only thing I know about the north african campaigns was from my step father who said the flies were so b bad you thought you would go mad . . I am totally biased but I think it was well done and I think they will make a few patches to make it more user friendly for people over time . I think the draw back of this game is you have to like flying and you have to learn quite a bit to fly these planes if you stick with it you will like it more and more . I would like to be able to drop flares , see better out the back , type with out crashing , and as always have more confidence in damage models sometimes they are a little severe , i have seen pictures of Ju 88's get awards for 1000 missions . I would give myself a medal if I could make it for 10 missions . I accept the fact that its an imperfect adaptation of real life with compromises and choices . I would love to live to be 500 years old just to see what they might come up with in 2520 maybe i could make my 10 missions in a row

    Re: Favourite Features

The sound of the Wellington when you start rolling down the runway.

In the desert, finding the road you are looking for (at the right time you expect it to be there) when it is your only landmark on the way to the target.

The new UI images and colouring, I am speachless that I have seen at least one peson still slate the UI in comments on steam.
Granted the MP selection screen is the same and a touch clunky, and setting the convergence of a 12 gun Hurricane is a little bit tedious, but everything else looks really good. The background images are really, really nicely done. I think there are just two out of all of them where the white sky shade clashes with the white text, but overall I don't ask for anything different. And I'm a seriously fussy **** on that sort of thing. Something that bugs me in other games but is nicely absent here is there is no delay when clicking things, or not enough to be irritating, (sure there are loading times but I don't refer to them).

And forget a Nightingale in Berkley square:...

    Re: Favourite Features

+ 'Clickable' cockpits. Got 5 - 6 keys on my keyboard free again.
+ The Martlet, Gladiator and Dewoitine and the Italian biplane, interesting aircraft. Not seen in other sims so far. (Maybe in modded old IL2 '46, don't know anymore).
+ Many more planes/exploding Flak in the air possible, that's really great.
+ Water looks very good, even on an ATI card now.

Thanks for your all work, i.e. the fast patching.
I'm looking forward to the future development of the game!

    Re: Favourite Features

Very interesting planeset that's historically accurate yet still really balanced for online and singleplayer

Servers can handle 100+ players even if most are congregated near the same spots

    Insane level of loadout/convergence/ammo customization

GUI (while simple and not that modern) has no loading between screens or any extra fluff, easy to move between menus and bind controls.

    Realistic bomb fuses

    Good spotting

Excellent platform for multiplayer campaigns (SoW, TWC, ACG etc)

    Long visibility range

Can have huge AI formations with tons of bombers, fighters, and flak without a big FPS hit

    Early morning fog effect

Realistic rendering of lighting and colours

ability to enter in chat commands (<tl, <obj, etc)

    Clickable cockpits

Never seen before theatre of war with North Africa and its planes

Now that is an excellent reminder of just how far things have come, I remember finding ATAG and TF because of the FPS to start with. Flashing white planes and a sim so choppy you could use it as a slideshow
That is what essentially started all this!
Now look at it! You can run the thing on ruddy integrated graphics if you needed to haha!
Not only that but it has also been made so much closer to what it was originally meant to be.

Finally someone who writes that he likes the GUI!!!
    Thank you!!!

I'm so sick and tired about people complainig about the GUI, just because they are used to anotherone!
I really prefer the CloD GUI over that of any of the other sims, just because I'm used to it.
The other ones drive me nuts and are the major reason why I do not play these games, still I never felt like whining about it ...

I agree, Clod GUI isn't that bad. It just needs some reorganization to group things logically and use real English to describe what they control (on the English version of course).

Jason (1C manager) knows very well the plus and minus points you mentioned and I am sure IL-2 Great Battles series will improve to make it as good as Tobruk on those issues. OTOH IL-2 GB has, IMHO, a far better/more up-to-date UI, maps etc. In the end it is simple : we need both products to fully enjoy WWII Warbirds. I, personally, would not be able to decide on 1 or the other if I only could get one !

What is a joke is that people say that this is expensive, when one considers that there is much, much more content in Tobruk than in a single IL-2 Great Battles/BoX Battle.
The people who call Desert Wings-Tobruk expensive have likely never bought a IL-2 GBs Battle pack, or are IL-2 GBs fanboys being total morons/jerks here.

The Tomahawks, Kittyhawks make it worth the price of admission, alone. Just my view.

This sim is now what i dreamed it would be. I never thought it could get to this stage. When i purchased it on it's release in 2011 it was unplayable. Now it is a great tribute to all those who have worked so hard to get it to this stage. Not perfect but very nearly there. Onwards and upwards from now on.

Vickers Wellington Mk1c. OJ-F P2517 'F for Freddie' of No.149 Squadron, star of 'Target for Tonight' directed by Harry Watt released in July 1941.

Freddy prepares for an air test prior to departure from Ford on ops with No.149 Squadron for a daring daylight attack on Marshalling Yards in Caen France 31\1|21. ATAG Operation Milk Run. Target destroyed. Six Wellingtons, One Blenheim together with
their Spitfire escort returned safely. One Wellington crashed on landing at Ford.

Note that I do think that the GUI could be organised a lot better, especially when it comes to the MP spawn screen, the plane selection, the loadouts, and the control editing. But it definitely is fast and when you click on something, it goes to that screen right away, no loading, no lagging, etc. Which is definitely better than IL2 GB for example which seems to load between every screen.

    Re: Favourite Features

Since we are on the Gui topic.. it does need some refining especially for newer players to figure out. Who would think to click on the flag to get started? Or click on the name of the plane above the airplane pic to show the whole list of available aircraft? We have played this game so long, I think we have forgotten how daunting of a task it was in the beginning. A lot of us dove in with Mp and eventually had to get on comms or chat to get directions. How many single players get so frustrated because they have no one to ask and give up? The best example of this was that new player just recently that Snapper helped. Snapper even commented that it was great to have " fresh eyes" and perspective of how difficult it really is to get started with this game. Also It would be nice to get rid of the Blocky rigid feel and look of it and make it more WWII feel. Toggle switchs / buttons and dials kinda like the old IL2 or something similar. Just an idea.
    Cheers

    Re: Favourite Features

I love absolutely everything about this sim.
The sounds are great when you are flying over an enemy airfield and flak is whizzing by.
Damage model is exquisite, I love scoring hits on an enemy plane and seeing bits fall off.
I love the way the controls work, giving a choice between analog and digital controls for many functions, so I can make similar controls for my cockpit and not have to use a keyboard, except to type insults at the enemy. I wish control assignments were grouped a little better, as it is sometimes hard to find what I am looking for. I love the fact that I can set up control profiles for every different plane I fly, and easily save or load them up to quickly change planes.
I, too, don't understand what people find to be wrong with the GUI...it works fine for me.
I see people complaining about the price, and I don't get it. Sure, it costs more than most programs cost 20 years ago, but then, so does everything else. And as someone said, if you go by price paid divided by hours played, it gets cheaper every day. I don't know any other thing where you can spend so little up front, and get so many hours of enjoyment. Years ago I used to go to the computer store (remember when they had those?) every week and buy the latest game for $50. Funny thing is, I don't think I ever completed one, or played it for more than a few hours before I got bored with it. Fast forward a few years, I probably flew 2,000 hours in IL-2 1946, I just checked my Steam account, and it shows I played IL-2 Cliffs of Dover for 1,238 hours, and CLOD Blitz for 1,964 hours. Who has time for any other game or sim? Not me!

    Re: Favourite Features

Simply not having to run reshade/sweetfx any more is so nice.

And to add to the points above: having to click a flag, and then 'create' under a 'Spawn Group' heading (when you are actually an individual) is still not instinctive to me and I've had CloD for years.) But, even in BoX you get people wondering how to start in MP ("How do I select a plane?" --> "select the airfield first"), so possibly whatever is set up can be misinterpreted.

But currently the MP screen says "Select an army to choose and existing plane, or on an airfield on the map to create a new one".

1st thing is it shoud say 'flag' not 'army' for clarity
2nd thing is you can't actually click an airfield until you have selected a flag in my experience, so it shoud say "Select a flag, then an airbase. Then select the aircraft image to change aircraft, or, [Create] to enter the server". Changing the label of 'Create' to 'Start' or 'Fly' would be a good thing too.

I think it must just be case of it directly using what the underlying code uses to allocate players and AI to a side, (Army = 1 or 2 I think for axis or allies (or vice versa)), so they put the 'help' text to say that when building the UI? Using flag, or even 'side' would have been a nice change to the descriptive text there, but probably was completely last back in the original release of the game!

It's extra weird though because I tend to think 'huh, I thought I was a pilot in the RAF (etc.)....'*

*I realise the US has an 'army' or 'navy' air force, perhaps other nations too, but still, Army on its own makes me think of a soldier.

Don't forget that the original game was created by Russians, not English native speakers.

    Re: Favourite Features

What I really like in CloD is the obscure features never finished or tuned, like the "PPT" and frequency adjust in Fiat Br.20 transceiver or
the Aerodrome Beacon light ability to blink in Morse Code runway code letters.

    Static5 Searchlight.Beacon_Light_GER1 gb 77369.92 181888.00 -360.00 /msg EGHJ
The "short range" - a meter or two; of CloD lights hinder this feature, to not say the bad illumination in planes cockpit (worse than in a 6v 1965 Volkswagen) making night flying a masochist thing.

Yes of course, it wasn't intended as a slight on their language abilities, just the 'oddness' of a hypothetical situation where an RAF officer chap was being told he was actually in the army now.

(Flashheart vs Baldrick for those that would understand that reference)

    Re: Favourite Features

I don't know if I would call this my favorite feature, but it is something I noticed that I think was not present in Blitz. Now when there is a midair collision viewed from a distance there is a yellow flash localized at the collision, and I think a very quick white flash across the screen followed by a boom. Kind of a wow moment.
