ATTACK TO CONVOY “BREAD” - 10 July 1940
[From: THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN – Christer Bergstrom Luftwaffe Airfields 1935-45 France (with Corsica and Channel Islands) By Henry L. deZeng IV SPITFIRE – John Nichol]

Merchant convoy “Bread” that had been spotted in the morning by the crew of the recon flight was the largest convoy passing through the Channel and Oberst Johannes Fink, commander of the Kampgeschwader 2 decided to strike it as soon as well entered in the Strait of Dover.
I./KG2 from Cambrai and II./KG2 from St.Léger immediately received directives for the attack. 47 Do 17s took off at 13:45 (German time, one hour ahead of British).
Hauptmann Johann Schalk, commander of the III Gruppe Zerstorergeschwader 26 (Yvrench asirbase) placed his 18 Bf110 from 1000 to 2000 metres above the slow bombers.
Another 2000 metres higher they were joined from 14 Bf109s of III./JG51 commanded Major Hannes Trautloft airborne from Boulogne Wimereux airfield.
Quite one hour later (around 13:50h British time) the southeastern CH radar stations reported echoes of a big formation approaching Pas de Calais.
Bentley Priory Headquarter forwarder the information to 11 Group’s RAF at Uxbridge that ordered to 5 Squadrons to intercept the enemies as follows:
No. 9 Hurricanes of 111 Squadron took off from Croydon at 13:05. They were already airborne and on patrol when at 13:50h vectored to cover the Convoy “Bread” passing ashore Dover.
No. 6 Spitfires of 64 Squadron scrambled from Kenley airdrome at 13:40h.
No. 8 Spitfires of 74 Squadron took off from Manston at 12:35 followed by 2 more after 10 minutes for a total of 10 aircrafts.
No. 5 Hurricanes of 56 Squadron of North Weald base were in “readiness duty” at the Manston airfield from where they took off at 14:05h.
No. 6 Hurricanes from Biggin Hill (32 Squadron) were on patrol to cover the convoy at height 11000ft since 13:15h.

ATTACK TO CONVOY “BREAD” - 10 July 1940
    [From: battleofbritain1940.net]

The transmission that the Dornier made at 1030hrs must have been received loud and clear, because at 1350hrs(1.50pm): British radar picks up a strong signal that indicated that a German formation had been detected coming across the French coast just west of Calais and heading in the general direction of Folkestone. It seemed obvious what they were after, this was the largest number of bombers ever seen coming across the Channel. The main force was 24 Dornier 17s spread in three groups, 30 escorting Bf110s and 20+ Bf109s. The 'scramble' order went out to Manston, Biggin Hill, Croydon, Hornchurch and Kenley. Manston dispatched the Hurricanes of 56 Squadron (North Weald) who had been operating there, Biggin Hill dispatched 32 Squadron (Hurricanes), Croydon dispatched 111 squadron (Hurricanes), Hornchurch dispatched the Spitfires of 74 Squadron while Kenley sent out six Spitfires of 64 Squadron towards the closing stages of the battle.

The Dorniers turned and headed for the Channel convoy code named 'Bread' just as 74, 56, 32 and 111 Squadrons arrived on the scene. The Spitfires of 74 Squadron and the Hurricanes of 56 and 32 Squadrons engaged combat with the Bf109s and the Bf110s while the Hurricanes of 111 Squadron went straight in and attacked the Dorniers. The skies off the coast at Folkestone became a maze of vapour trails snaking in all directions. It was a tough dogfight with neither side gaining the upper hand, Flying Officer J Mungo-Park in a Spitfire swept past a Dornier and the resulting 'hit' saw the bomber drift down towards the waters of the Channel, another Spitfire of 74 Squadron scored a 'hit' on one of the Bf109s and saw it head in the general direction of France and safety. As the dogfight continued, the Dornier formation started to break up as many of the fighters began to harass them like dogs snapping at their tails, Flying Officer Tom Higgs of 111 Squadron took to a lone Dornier firing many rounds towards the weaving bomber that was desperately trying to evade the ensuing Hurricane, but Higgs went in closer than his firing range, and still with thumb on the firing button clipped the Dornier with his wing before spinning seawards out of control with one wing missing. The Dornier also spun out of control and hurtled to what seemed a watery grave. Both aircraft crashed into the Channel and a rescue launch that was soon on the scene picked up the pilot of the Dornier and another member of the crew, but there was no sign of the rest of the bombers crew or of Tom Higgs. This was the first major battle of the Battle of Britain, and considering the amount of aircraft that were in the air Higgs was the only British fatality, three Hurricanes were damaged as well as four Spitfires, two Dorniers were shot down and ten of the escort fighters. As far as the convoy "Bread" was concerned, only one ship was sunk the rest were not even attacked and continued their journey.

THE RAF CASUALTIES: (July 10th 1940)
    0700hrs.Hurricane P3359. 253 Sqn. Kirton-on-Lindsay. (Aircraft destroyed)
Sgt I.C.C. Clenshaw. Killed. (Lost control in bad visibility)
1300hrs. Hurricane P3671. 111 Sqn Croydon. (Aircraft destroyed)
F/O T.P.K. Higgs. Killed. (Collided with Do17 off coast near Folkestone. Baled out but drowned. Body found in Norway 15.8.40)

    TONIGHT NUMBERS:
24 human players! This is a great result for a test mission, so we hope to see this number grow even more!
18 AI on the british side and 18 on the German side.

    Do-17: 27 airplanes
    Bf110: 16 airplanes (10 AI)
    Bf109: 14 airplanes (8 AI)

    Spit: 12 airplanes (7 AI)
    Hurri: 18 airplanes (11 AI)

I would like to ask a couple of questions to those who participated in the mission:

-) Did you have server slowdown issues preventing you from playing?

-) did you find the detailed briefing?

-) did you find the dialogue with radar / bomber adequate?

-) Do you have other proposals?

Thank you very much to everybody!

Re: Tuttovola wednesday night -> Battle of England 1940 (historical version)

I am posting this here again, since not everyone goes to the other official forums

Mission was great, thanks again! Looking forward to the next chapters.

How I had missed „coops„. 50+ planes attacking their targets in England with escorts and being intercepted by numerous RAF fighters. Huge furball going on.
Proper mission planning with proper briefings on radio, assigned callsigns, defined tasks etc. Cool stuff, keep them coming!

Did you have server slowdown issues preventing you from playing?

Minor stutters when the AI Bombers spawned in, for brief seconds at the beginning of the mission.
No problems at all while playing.

-) did you find the detailed briefing?

Yes, well done. One point missing though was the RV point with the bombers.
Maybe add next time at what time, where and at what altitude we are to meet the bombers before heading out.

-) did you find the dialogue with radar / bomber adequate?

Very good. Informative and easy to see. We knew where they were and at what altitude and also where they were headed.

-) Do you have other proposals?

Since we don‘t have retrofitted 109E-3 with MG FF/M in CloD, consider the E-4 for future missions instead of the E-3.

Re: Tuttovola wednesday night -> Battle of England 1940 (historical version)

Another beautiful mission. The attention to the historical detail was excellent and for for than a moment I have had the feeling of really flying during the BoB era.Very well done guys, keep up the amazing job!

-) Did you have server slowdown issues preventing you from playing?
Just some minor and very briefly microstutters when the various AI raids spawned ( But this is normal ). Everything else ran like a charm. The server, IMHO, is perforfing extremely well, especially considering the high number of aircraft involved in the mission.

-) did you find the detailed briefing?
Very helpful. Maybe some additional info should be provided to the players about the " what to do and what to expect ".

-) did you find the dialogue with radar / bomber adequate?
Yes. Just one note about this. Watching the ATAG_Flare streaming videos I've noted ( and some Red pilots were reporting it too ) that some of the on-screen messages were too long and so not fully visible on the screen. The messages of interest should be shortened a bit so to let them fully visible on the screen.

-) Do you have other proposals?
Yep several. We will discuss these during the week

Again thank yoiu very much for organizing this event, it was really a blast!!!

Last but not least really thanks to all the pilots who participated to the event. It was a pleasure flying with/against you!

Re: Tuttovola wednesday night -> Battle of England 1940 (historical version)

I would like to ask a couple of questions to those who participated in the mission:

-) Did you have server slowdown issues preventing you from playing?
None whatsoever! Our custom skins took a few minues to load in but by the time we were formed up they were showing.

-) did you find the detailed briefing?
Yup! It was easy to find in the discord.

-) did you find the dialogue with radar / bomber adequate?
Our (74 Squadron, callsign Dysoe) order to take off happened while we were still in the process of spawning in and so we weren't super sure what was going on - we just took off anyway and started flying towards Dover. I would potentially have the take-off orders a few minutes later just to make sure everyone is properly spawned in.

We would also have liked to see a bit more detail in the radar calls - all I remember was "enemy forming on the other side of the channel" and then an order to climb to 23 thousand feet, but I would have liked to see a message following those orders with the last known position of the bombers and fighters - for example 30+ bombers south-west of Folkestone, Angles 15, snappers above at angels 20.

We arrived at Folkestone right as the bombers did, but we were significantly higher and thought that there would be a second wave of bombers as well, so we didn't attack the bombers and only had some minor inconsequential dogfights with a few 109s.

Lesson learned for next time (attack the bombers!) but we were a bit confused on who we should engage. We were also thinking that the first raid was going to be engaged by the AI Hurricanes already in the area, and we were going to need to relieve them or hit a second wave.

Of course, RAF did not have intel of the amount of raids there were going to be - we just made a bad guess. But it would be nice to see some more detailed orders from the AI command or in the briefing, telling us something like "your primary mission is to attack any bombers you see" or something.

-) Do you have other proposals?
74 took off from Hornchurch using the active runway (with the yellow boards) and almost everyone had the sketchiest, scariest takeoffs ever. I wonder if the active runway was not actually aligned with the wind or the wind was considerably higher than we thought? One of our pilots crashed on takeoff and the rest nearly crashed. Perhaps the wind or the runways can be looked at? Or custom spawn points can be made that are near the end of the runway that we are supposed to use?

We did not have any issues on landing.

Overall it was a really fun mission despite the lack of action for our group, we will be back for more!

Re: Tuttovola wednesday night -> Battle of England 1940 (historical version)

Thank you for organizing and setting up this mission yesterday . I enjoyed it a lot.

    I had no servers issues.

Can`t say anything about the briefing because due to a late take off I was pretty occupied to catch up with the other escort fighters. Some basic in screen messages about the current position, altitude and the course of the bomber groups makes it certainly a lot easier for the deployed fighter wings. I must have been so busy with observing the bombers and keeping an eye on the RPM`s in the E3, that I couldn´t check the in screen messages closely. Fortunately I got the essential information over TS.

I appreciate your efforts to create missions which are based on real happenings in the BOB. Hope I can study the briefing / messages next time in greater detail.

Looking forward to the next event

Yellow boards is not aligned with wind, but with the default runway - having strip visible or not, embed in that airbase.

Better rely on windsock or/and in TAB-7-3 wind direction, ignoring "Strip" recommendation, as this part don't make sense (seems that math's involved is off).

See how Strip recommendation - for the default wind of map FROM 270 TO 90, varies for two runway with similar heading (224 - 242) and (267 - 273).

    https://i.postimg.cc/nXrk2kD5/Clo-D-Strip.jpg

The issue is aggravated be the fact that "controller" only report directions (headings, wind) in 30º increments, using (Timosthenes 282 BCE 12-Wind Rose).

Re: Tuttovola wednesday night -> Battle of England 1940 (historical version)

    Hi guys,
Here you will find the answers to what you have reported in recent days.
    Thank you for your time!

    Briefing:

-) Maybe add next time at what time, where and at what altitude we are to meet the bombers before heading out.
Not knowing how long it would take for the players to take off and climb, I put in the briefing what time the bombers would pass over the most important cities, so that everyone could organize themselves to rejoin. I don't know if you haven't read or if you would have preferred a specific point. In case I can do it easily for the next mission.

-) Very helpful. Maybe some additional info should be provided to the players about the " what to do and what to expect ".
I will, but the ideal would be that one commander for the blue forces and one for the red forces would take care of it. (read at the bottom)

    Radar:
-) Some of the on-screen messages were too long and so not fully visible on the screen. The messages of interest should be shortened a bit so to let them fully visible on the screen + The radar messages display duration was short sometimes.
Absolutely my fault, I didn't consider a different screen resolution. The message was only okay if you play 4k (like I do). For the next time I will try to keep them shortened.
About the time: I think they are too fast to, but have no idea if is possible to increase the time. I will give a try.

-) Our order to take off happened while we were still in the process of spawning
Ok, for the next mission I will consider a longer time of "spawning and organizing".

-) A message following those orders with the last known position of the bombers and fighters
There was this kind of messages ("Bandits are approaching you from the SouthEast, Vector 0-9-5, Angels 15. Seems a large formation with no escort." "Bandits 12 o'clock, there are escort fighters!"). Let me know if you didn't see them cause you were to much into the battle or if you want somenthing more specific. [In any case, read at the bottom]

Here you can read the whole dialogue:
    HTML Code:
"SAPPER, Jacko: We are climbing to Angels 15 and head towards to convoy. Over"
"JACKO, Sapper: Copy that. Convoy position: Kilo 9. Heading: 240. Out"

"JACKO, Sapper: The radar signals a few bandits climbing beyond the Channel. Stand by next to the convoy and wait for orders. Over."
    "SAPPER, Jacko: Copy that, Out."

"BAFFIN and DYSOE, Sapper. Start your engine and wait for orders. Over."

"JACKO, BAFFIN, DYSOE, Sapper: The radar it's signaling a lot of bandits activity beyond the Channel. Out."
"BAFFIN and DYSOE, Sapper: Take off immediatly and rejoin with JACKO over the convoy. Kilo 9 - Angels 15. Over."

"JACKO, Sapper. Wait for reinforcements before attacking. Over."
    "SAPPER, Jacko. Copy that. Out."

"JACKO, BAFFIN, DYSOE, Sapper: Bandits are climbing beyond the Channel. Stay with the convoy and wait for orders. Over."
    "SAPPER, JACKO. Copy that. Out."
"WAGON, Sapper: Take off immediatly and head for the convoy. Over."
    "SAPPER, Wagon. Copy that. Out."

"JACKO, Sapper: Bandits large formation near the coast, Angels 11. Stay with the convoy until we understand which direction they will take. Over. "
    "SAPPER, Jacko: Copy that. Out."
"RED FLIGHT, Jacko: Everybody stand by over the convoy. BAFFIN climb to Angels 16, DYSOE climb to Angels 20. Out."

"JACKO, Sapper: Bandits are now at Angels 13. Stand by for vector. Over."
"SAPPER, Jacko: We will wait for WAGON before to engage. I repeat, we will wait for WAGON before to engage. Out."

"SAPPER, Jacko: Let's make Angels. BAFFIN climb to Angels 18, DYSOE climb to Angels 23. Still wait for WAGON. Out."
"JACKO, Wagon: Our ETA is 8 minutes. Out."

"JACKO, Sapper: Bandits are approaching you from the SouthEast, Vector 0-9-5, Angels 15. Seems a large formation with no escort. Over."
"SAPPER, Jacko: Vector to 0-9-5, Angels 15. Copy that. Out."
"RED FLIGHT, Jacko: Everybody head east of Folkestone to engage bandits. Out"

"SAPPER, Jacko: Bandits 12 o'clock, there are escort fighters! We need support. Out."
"FREEMA, Sapper: Head immediatly to Folkestone and engage bandits. Over."
    "SAPPER, Freema: Copy that. Out."

"RED FLIGHT, Freema: Hold on guys, we are here with you!"
-) I couldn´t check the in screen messages closely
I'm thinking about the possibility to add also a real audio message.
It would increase immersion, but it would create other problems. Like: usually the volume is too low + it would mess with players' in-game communications.
We can give it a try and see how it works!

    Do you have other proposals?

-) Since we don‘t have retrofitted 109E-3 with MG FF/M in CloD, consider the E-4 for future missions instead of the E-3.
The e-4 has the automatic engine, so at the moment we would like to remain with the e-3. (we like to get you in trouble).

-) I wonder if the active runway was not actually aligned with the wind or the wind was considerably higher than we thought?
I didn't pay enough attention to this when creating the mission, I'll try to check it out next time. In any case, there shouldn't have been so much wind!

-) Not at the moment, maybe for the next time we should do little brief between sides in order to give different obj for each squadrons
    Here's the key point!
I fully agree that there is a need for greater participation by the players in coordinating the various squadrons with each other. This would also solve a couple of problems discussed above.
    My idea is:
An initial briefing will be provided (very detailed for the attacking formation, more generic for the defending faction which will have to be able to adapt during the game).
At this point the players can organize themselves independently to provide top cover / close cover / sweeps to the bombers (attackers) and divide the tasks of engaging fighters / bombers (defenders).

BUT: to do this it is necessary that the pilots have a common channel of communication, at the moment we are too scattered between forums, private messages and more.

    SO:
I renew the invitation to join our Discord channel, just create an account (a couple of minutes) and keep an eye only on the CLOD-BRIEFING section (red or blue).
You can also download the app by phone, plus any channels you don't care about can be muted so you don't receive unnecessary notifications.
At the moment we believe that this is the solution and that it can greatly increase the players' enjoyment.
(To receive the Discord invitation, write me privately)

    Update:

    - since now the TS channels will remain the same, so players will not waist time to modify whisper before every mission. Less historical but infinitely more practical.

    - as TS, also the server's password will remain the same (I will give you on Wednesday)

    - briefing will be send asap on Discord channel, so you will have an idea about your mission and you can coordinate yourself.

    - I wish to give you an important update, but unfortunately seems like it's not possible to do it in multiplayer. Maybe in the future.

Here you can find and download all the historical aircraft skins and the reference images to set the correct parameters to show them correctly. Note that the aircraft number you need to set may vary depending on your role inside your unit ( Normally the #1 goes to the Flight Leader the others follow )

One little special contest for the Luftwaffe pilots. The Luftwaffe pilot that this evening will end the event with the major number of air kills will win a very special Bf 109 historical skin, never published before and, as far as I know, never realised for Il-2 Sturmovik: Blitz/Desert Wings!

Re: Tuttovola wednesday night -> Battle of England 1940 (historical version)

ATTACK TO DOVER HARBOUR AND "CAT" CONVOY - 29 July 1940

At 0734 hours, a large formation comprising forty-eight Ju 87 Stuka dive-bombers from IV/LG 1, II/StG 1, and II/StG 3, escorted by eighty Bf 109s from JG 51 and III/JG 26, crossed the Channel to attack Dover Harbour.

Spitfires from Nos. 41 and 64 Squadrons along with Hurricanes from Nos. 56 and 501 Squadrons were scrambled to intercept, shooting down three Stukas and damaging six other German aircraft. Two RAF fighters were lost and several more damaged.

The steamer SS Gronland and patrol yacht Gulzar were sunk by the Stukas. HMS Sandhurst was also destroyed.

At about 1720 hours, eleven Bf 110 fighter-bombers from ErprGr 210, escorted by thirty Bf 110 fighters of ZG 26, and a formation of H-111 and Do-17 attacked the convoy codenamed CAT off Harwich. Several RAF squadrons were scrambled to intercept but only Hurricanes of No. 151 Squadron engaged. Two Hurricanes were damaged and force-landed. A Bf 110 fighter-bomber was also damaged. Two ships in the convoy were hit.

    THE SERVER MISSION
    -) 100 AI
    -) 27 players
    -) Two convoys

I already had some report yesterday, but I would like to ask a couple of questions:

-) Did you have server slowdown issues preventing you from playing?
[I had right after takeoff, but almost nothing over Dover. And it seems strange. In any case for the next mission I will reduce AI's number]

-) did you like new the briefing format?
-) Did somebody tested the Rearm and Refuel?

-) I guess nobody recieved the messages for the second mission...

+) we are trying to enter the stats for the next missions, but it seems extremely complicated. Is there anyone who is able to help us in this step?

    P.s.
    Subscribe for the next mission!!!

-) Did you have server slowdown issues preventing you from playing?

No, just some micro stutters very briefly in the beginning when AI aircraft spawned in.

-) did you like new the briefing format?

    Briefing was great! Well done.

-) Did somebody tested the Rearm and Refuel?

Didn‘t get a chance, since I had to change my guns (game bug with the empty MG FF also showing as MG FF but being empty in the plane).

-) I guess nobody recieved the messages for the second mission...

Just in the briefing. Personally didn‘t like the second wave the way it was done for two reasons. Stukas went home alone with no escort. And the second fight was not organized at all. It developed into a normal dogfight you would find in a normal server.
For me it would have been better to return with the Stukas, land, rearm and refuel and get new instructions. For example, second attack coming at time x, scramble, head to RV point y and escort the bombers. Those can be done if the briefing too beforehand since the waypoints of the AI aircraft are well timed.

    That's a strange password...

By the way I saw that you added Ju88's so I changed my primary choice of aircraft from the Bf110 C-7 to the Ju88
Of course I am flexible to join any squad as needed to balance the mission.

Re: Tuttovola wednesday night -> Battle of England 1940 (historical version)

ATTACK TO DOVER CH AND MANSTON AIRFIELD - 12 August 1940

Shortly after 0900 hours, twenty Bf 109 and Bf 110 fighter-bombers of Erprobungsgruppe 210 attacked the Chain Home radar stations at Dover, Rye, and Pevensey, knocking them out of action for six hours.
Actually, this was the first "bomber" action made by Bf-110.
(We did it yesterday, super low level attack to avoid to be spotted by the radar! Finaly we had blind british)

While emergency repairs were being carried out, Do 17s of I/KG 2, escorted by Bf 109s of JG 54, attacked RAF Lympne, damaging hangers, offices, and the landing ground.
(I moved this attack to the beginning of the mission for "cinematic" reasons)

At about 1100 hours, twenty-two Ju 87 Stuka dive-bombers of IV/LG 1, escorted by Bf 109s of III/JG 26, were despatched to attack two convoys codenamed ARENA and AGENT in the Thames Estuary. The naval trawlers HMS Tamarisk and Pyrope were sunk. Fifteen Hurricanes from Nos. 151 and 501 Squadrons were scrambled to intercept, shooting down one Stuka and damaging several others before the escorting Messerschmitts intervened. Two Hurricanes were lost and another two damaged.
(I moved the convoy closer to make possible a second sortie)

At 1151 hours, a large formation was detected heading towards Brighton. The incoming raid comprised sixty-three Ju 88 bombers of KG 51, escorted by 120 Bf 110s of ZG 2 and ZG 76 along with twenty-five Bf 109s of JG 53. The bulk of the bomber formation attacked Portsmouth Harbour, destroying the railway station, oil tanks, and shipping, and killing ninety-six navy personnel and civilians. A smaller formation of fifteen Ju 88s split off and attacked the Chain Home radar station at Ventnor, knocking it out of action for three days. Almost sixty Hurricanes and Spitfires were scrambled from Middle Wallop, Tangmere, Warmwell, and Exeter but arrived too late to prevent the bombing. Eleven Ju 88s, five Bf 110s, and two Bf 109s were shot down for the loss of thirteen British fighters and four damaged.

At 1245 hours, twenty Bf 109 and Bf 110 fighter-bombers of Erprobungsgruppe 210 made a low level attack on RAF Manston, immediately followed by a medium level attack by eighteen Do 17s of I/KG 2. An estimated 150 high explosive bombs hit the aerodrome, destroying two hangers, the workshops where a civilian clerk was killed, and damaging two Blenheims. A Spitfire of No. 65 Squadron was also damaged while taking off during the attack.
(I changed Do-17 with Ju-88 to allow those wishing to participate as a bomber)

At 1743 hours, RAF Hawkinge was attacked by Erprobungsgruppe 210. Hangars, workshops, and other buildings were destroyed, and two Spitfires were seriously damaged with others being struck by splinters. Two civilians and five airmen were also killed.

Despite the damage, both Manston and Hawkinge were back on ‘top line’ within twenty-four hours.

I would like to ask a couple of questions:

-) There seems to be no stuttering or lag issue this time, if not please let me know.
-) How were the times of the mission? Too long / too short between attacks?

-) Other ideas to improve the gaming experience?

    P.S.
We are considering bringing the same gaming experience to African theater as well. Could it be of interest?

The time would be 19.00 (GMT + 2), or Saturday or Sunday (depending on the ATAG event, we would choose the other day)

    Hi Airone,
It was great fun as usual. Thanks for organizing.
The mission flow was excellent. Nothing to say.
No stuttering my end. I did experience a couple of 2-3 second freezes but I think it is local to my computer, nothing to do with the server.
And yes, expanding to the african theatre would be fantastic. Please do not forget the beautiful CR.42, BR.20, G.50, and MC.202 's
