The difference of course, was the Hien had a large wing, lower wingloading and therefore turned better.
But the larger wing made it slower.
Also had two cannon in the wing which gave it a much bigger punch.
Same engine though... the Japanese were shipped a sample DB601Aa which they license built... which goes to show, with the similarity in looks, the engine is always the starting point around which the aeronautical designer starts.
